Subject: Hands in Houston Actually, I'm sure it's been here for awhile, it's just that I never listen to "those" stations normally. But, there are 2 stations here playing it somewhat regularly now, although I requested once and waited 2 hours and they still didn't play it. But YWMFM came on like 10 minutes later. So anyway, now that I've heard the majority of the song a couple times, I just have a couple questions. How many of you think Jewel has gone way over the edge in the "production" category? Case in point...can any of you imagine what "Hands" would sound like with her playing it solo acoustic? Yeah, not likely. It's not written that way. The sound just wouldn't be the same, thus changing the song itself. So I'm wondering if Jewel is now going to have tons of electronics up on stage with her at her shows, along with a 5 or 6 piece band? If not, then I don't see how she can match the CD sound while playing the songs live. I'm not saying I dislike the song, it's nice and all, but it's just that she's doing what I (and many others) knew she would this time around. Gone commercial. In a big way. Jewel, Tori, Alanis, Fiona, they're all the same now. All commercial. Of course Tara's CD is produced alot too, BUT, she can still pull off the songs live, acoustic, without losing the overall feel. If Jewel can manage to do this as well, then great. But I think it'll be very hard. Another question....since there's been alot of discussion that Jewel's "follow-up" CD wouldn't be released until mid 1999, then what is "Spirit"? If this isn't her follow-up to PoY, then how do we classify it? An appetizer to hold us over till 1999? I'm just a bit confused about all of this. At first, her 2nd CD WAS supposed to be released this Fall, then with the movie, the book, etc., it was pushed back until maybe the Summer of 1999. Now lo and behold, she has a new CD! So if this isn't the follow-up CD, yet she had the time to do this one, then why couldn't she have gone ahead and just made her *real* 2nd CD? I wonder. Seems strange to me. She can make this one, yet not the one she was supposed to. So I'm assuming all the songs planned for her "2nd" CD aren't any of the ones we'll hear on "Spirit"? Afterall, it's just termed a "seasonal CD". Not a regular ole' Jewel follow-up to PoY CD. Somewhat confused here. Mike or Alan, if you can bring light to this confusion, please feel free to. In the meantime, sure, I'll buy the new CD, and the other new one next year. But I wish Jewel wouldn't sell out so much, it's one thing to go commercial, but she's really done it to the extreme I think. Kicked in the turbo charger ya know. And does anyone sense a touch of country in "Hands"? Yeah, "Morning Song" has that feel too, but maybe Jewel should look into this some, and just turn country. She's half way there anyway. She could be the next crossover artist like Shania and Leanne. Maybe they all could have a special concert tour, dubbed the "Crossover Tour". That would be original. A little bit of everything thrown in. I guess I just miss that voice, the one the sings the lines in PoY, the song. The voice that's backed only by a guitar, not tons of electronic musical devices, all coming together to form one big blend of some sort of generic sound. It really takes away from her natural talent, her voice. And her guitar playing. Ya think Jewel is playing guitar on Hands? ANY guitar? Unlikely. I don't know, cause I haven't seen the credits, but if she is, you can't hear it. Will this be the new Jewel? Just singing? Like Alanis? You gotta wonder. Well, just my opinion. Hand's is a nice sounding song, but just so different for a "Jewel" song. "Under the Water" was as well, maybe she's just more into that groove now. Funny, I didn't think of "Under the Water" as being a preview to her new CD. Would have never guessed that. They played it on the MIX station in Boston, and the first time I heard it I didn't know it was her until the end and it really annoyed me. The second time it seemed better, but it still sounded silly to me. Then again, it was 4 in the morning. Everything sounds silly at 4 in the morning. In this morning i fellt asleep so i missed the song, but tonight (wednesday) a dj from the dutch broadcast association NPS played this wonderful new song of Jewel ---> Hands. It 's a song with a deeper meaning, a lot of beautiful lyrics, a powerful piece of new Jewel music, including a lot of good backgrounds eg a band playing with Jewel....favorite phrase of this new song :---> In The End Only Kindness Matters --> Can we try to explain that!!! Jewel means there's nothing more of use to mankind than Peace and Understanding. The good thing of the dj on dutch radio was that he called my name being a huge fan of Jewel, so you can imagine me feeling so proud!!! greetings and wishes all the dutch EDA's All the Best ! michiel http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html a dutch tribute site to Jewel - a beautiful angel from alaska ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Oct 1998 14:25:06 -0700 From: "Wizard" Subject: Hands in Chicago Howdy Dowdy Boys & Girls! For you Chicago area EDA's this Thursday, October 8, WXRT 93.1 FM will feature Hands sometime during its "New Releases Thursday". I caught a snippet of the song during the promo, and its sounds pretty good (as well as I can judge from hearing 7 seconds of it). Unfortunately, they can play this at any time during the day so we'll need to listen in. Ditch school if you need to; if you can't listen at work tell your boss to *shove it*. Greenfield" Subject: Re: Hands on 89X for those of you who live in and around Detroit Hi! After hearing my local station (Star 98.7 in L.A.) play "Hands," I sent the station manager an email thanking them, telling them to look for a "bump" in their ratings due to playing it because the word is out over the internet that they are, and asking them to play some cuts from the new CD when it arrives (I asked in particular for "Deep Water," "Innocence Maintained," and "Absence of Fear."). The stations like to be praised for what they are doing, and it's not a terrible idea to get it "on the record" that they will benefit from playing the song (in case their ratings do go up), so I recommend emailing your local stations that are playing the song to let them know how you feel about it, if ya wanna. I've heard no mention of any "vinyl pressing" (as in records) plans so far. The limited edition 2 record set of "Pieces Of You" wasn't released until late July of 1997, which was two-&-a-half years after the CD release. If I hear anything, I'll definately post it. The sound of the POY vinyl is wonderful (not to mention full size graphics & extra tracks). I'd definately enjoy listening to "Spirit" in this format, too. Many wrong assumptions. A "seasonal CD" was part of the idea at the starting point, but that's about it. "Spirit" is Jewel's 2nd (followup to POY) album. It simply has a focus of love, caring & spirituality running through it. To quote Jewel's website: >There's a quote from "Hands" that Jewel has been saying for years: "In >The End Only Kindness Matters". That sentiment eminates as the theme >throughout the rest of the CD. "Spirit" is beautiful and lyrical. The CD >is an antidote - it encourages thought and inspires goodness. This should clearly explain why you're not going to get songs like "Carnivore", "Nicotine Love", "Fading Away", "Tough Girl", "Love Me Leave Me Alone", "Satellite" (& others often mentioned) this time around. These are all angry and/or cynical songs & they totally do NOT fit what Jewel is doing with "Spirit". She's focused on finding a musical antidote to anger & cynicism with this album. It doesn't mean she doesn't like these songs or anything at all regarding them. It simply means they don't fit this project. I suggest everyone at least have the patience to listen to it before passing judgement on how successfully she achieves her goals. I think you'll be most pleasantly surprised. Well i heard 'Hands' on the radio this afternoon in Toronto, the radio station was CFNY 102.1 fm "The Edge", which is pretty much my favourite station down here. On to the song. I really liked it, i had my doubts about hearing anything new by Jewel because i thought maybe all the media and fame got to her, but each time i think that, i'm proven wrong by the little alaskan. It was a really moving song and totally Jewel-like, it kind of leaves you wanting more, so now i can't wait till her new cd comes out. Way to go Jewel. take care everyone, - -Gian
