And "SiBtW" isn't all that deep or metaphorically ripe, it's a very wordy song but it's point and the thread that runs throughout it is pretty simple. It, along with Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, is Jewel's most Dylan-esque song lyrically speaking. There are a lot of cute word pairings that are there very cool and quite amusing yet literary at the same time. In terms of interpretation it isn't a real story, just a conglomeration of imagery revolving around a running theme. You start with Jewel, who is personally involved in the song as narrator unlike most of her songs, her pen present but her courage to write or speak out having deserted her. Then starts the endless tirade of "I'm sorry"s which the somewhat writer's blocked Jewel comes with it as all she can muster. They are not real apologies and the things she's sorry for are more just off the top of her head, those randoms musing we have late at night just thinking about random stuff. The non-rhyming love letters is nicely placed before the Jesus reference, nice contrast, espeically followed up by the "I swear to god it wont happen again." Sometimes it be that way is just the running credo throughout the song. Sort of like an answers for all her sorrys. Hey, you know, wacky shit happens but sometimes that's just how life is. Another cute pairing starts off the second stanza as Jewel replaces Juliet with herself as she is being addressed by Romeo. I always liked the subtle conceit of this line and the self-referencing, putting her name write in the song, it's unique and not often seen in legitimate music(rappers naming themselves in songs generally doesnt count). "Sorry I was a point you were destined to miss" is another cool line, original, quite random, but good. There's a lot of assonance and consonance and other such literary/poetic devices throughout this song like the flow of the line, inter-line rhyming and all, from "irreverently" to "old olive tree." Stuff like this is what makes the song sound cool. There's the lost love thread throughout the song too. This one's kinda obvious. All the relationship and sexy references revolve around this theme. Her heart breaking, oh well nothing left to sell, love rang like a bell, all that stuff. Then there's the goldilocks stanza. This is just playful referencing to childhood bedtime-story stuff. Attempted segue back to the relationship thing with never having gotten to see him sleeping like a baby swaddled in bliss. Then you get what Jewel says was a Dylan inspired "electricity chases it's tail in the hall." Random offshoot on another tangent of proper nouns references-St. Petersberg, Aphrodite, Neptune. Interesting to note the connection between them all. They're all very fairy-tale-ish. From Jesus to Romeo to Goldilocks to mythology. Then the cutsie grammar school glue line. A nice little contrast made about technology with the "jet's metal wings" not being able to cross "these simple things" is a subtle form of Jewel's oft- voiced complaint about our society and our ability to manufacture technology combined with out inability to grow closer to one another as human beings or to solve other such problems. Also is reminiscent of another folk singer, Cat Stevens, and some of the lines from his song "Where do the Children Play?" Next stanza is the flame licking the air with it's silver tongue and night's many hands compared to her sole one. A bit of an in-song reference back to the opening lines about night vs. herself. Camomille tea, 'nother proper noun. The too-small match. Then the song goes into chorus and stuff and leads to end. Fun song, everything flows well. Very poemy. And like I said quite a lot of early Dylan here, this song could just about fit right in there on Another Side, Freewheelin', Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61. For the benefit of recent subscribers & those who are confused, heres a basic recap on everything of interest presently. October 98: Jewel will be doing a photo shoot for Rolling Stone & Vogue Magazine. She also films the video for her next single “Hands”, this week. This new single will hit radio stations on 10/26 followed by both foreign & domestic releases shortly thereafter (store release dates have not been announced yet). These single releases will likely contain extra tracks and those tracks will likely be different from each other on the US & European releases. November 98 On November 14th, Jewel will be the featured musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Her long awaited 2nd album “HANDS” will be released three days later on Tuesday, November 17th (& I think the previous day in Europe) in North America. The confirmed final tracklist will be posted shortly & yes, it will also be an "enhanced CD" with multimedia content that you can play on your computer. A brief (few weeks) US Tour is currently being worked on. Dates & venues will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. Please be patient. I will post all that info in plenty of time. Also Jewel will be doing several other TV appearances in November & I'll keep you informed as they become confirmed. The video for "Hands" will also likely begin airing on VH1 & MTV around this time. That's the basic recap of current Jewel-news. Other additional previously posted info is: Jewel's movie "Ride With The Devil" is tentatively scheduled to hit movie theaters nationwide sometime in April of next year. She will also be featured in another film next year (on TV) called "Stand Up and Be Counted". This is a project by David Crosby & Graham Nash & is a film documentary of social activism in popular music. This will also be published in book form. The only other questions I'm getting are all related to various rumors about Jewel's current boyfriend. Sorry, not gonna touch that one.
