My two > cents, flame me. Quotation is a perfectly respectable tool for poets, authors and lyricists who wish to convey something. Heck, the jazz greats snagged licks from one another all the time, it was part tribute, part clever re-contextualizing. I really don't think Jewel is trying to steal from Bob Marley, she's just referring to him - not even irreverantly. I think we're jumping the gun a little here, considering we haven't even *heard* Jewel's song yet... the impression I get is that she's listened to Marley's song and written her own song based around the same concepts... chances are the only direct lift from Bob's song is the one line "songs of freedom", but I guess we won't really know until Nov 17th... I personally see this as a reflection of Jewel's admiration for Marley's work as opposed to outright plagiarism... every songwriter must get their inspiration from somewhere - whether it be something they notice out in the street or a close friend that's passed away - if Jewel has found inspiration in Bob's song, then good on her!!! :-) I really wouldn't throw Jewel into the same category as the Puff Daddy's of this world just yet (not that I don't like hip-hop), she is far too creative and original for that... :-) oh yeah, and by the way, I *am* a Marley fan too... Of the old songs that look like be on "Spirit", I have all except "Winter Song". So I'd like to get hold of a tape with "Winter Song" on it; also "Raven" and "Let It Rip, Let ItFly", which I don't have either. I expect the versions on "Spirit" will be somewhat diferent from earlier versions, so I'd like to have those earlier versions too. If any kind Angel out there has these songs . . . I do have some angelfood to trade. I'm in Australia, though. Talking about changes to songs, I wonder if "Deep Water" will still talk about "the abstractions of religion" and will "We will all be christed when we hear ourselves say we are that to which we pray" be maintained in "Innocence Maintained"? Changing the words is Jewel's prerogative, of course, but I'm just curious. We'll know in November. It seems there are still many of us EDAs who are wanting one. When he sees how many people want the shirts, (and how much $ he could make?) maybe he'll want to make them again. Some explanations on how to play some Jewel songs. And if anyone has the capabilities, some realaudio files of someone playing some of the songs slowly. I think that would be a great site.
