If you would like to subscribe please send email to : siren_list@hotmail.com with subscribe in the subject line Siren is for discussion of any female musical artist. I started it as a reaction to lists where people got upset to see any mention of any other artist than the one the list was for. This is the place to make comparisons and recommendations, discuss influences of one artist on another, wonder if they've met, would like to do a duet, hate each other, etc., etc. This list is NOT for flaming or criticizing artists without reason. Any criticism must be logical (i.e. accompanied by a reason) and not childish (i.e. simply stating "She sucks" or "Who does she think she is?") Posts of this nature may not be sent and excessive posts may result in the offender being removed from the list. Please keep in mind that this is my first attempt at this; it may be rocky at first and any suggestions are welcomed. Please interact on the list and post often. If Siren doesn't work as hoped I will have to shut it down and we will have to go back to posting surreptitiously on other lists about our favorite artists. Finally, I got subscriptions to the list originally by posting to mailing lists. If you subscribe to any list for an artist that might be interested in this, please let me know by sending mail to siren_list@hotmail.com with "list" in the subject line. POY was considered to be "unlistenable" when Jewel first recorded it. Few radio stations were willing to play her. Just some food for thought. Oh and one more thing... Why would we want Jewel's songs to become overly commercialised and popular anyway?? One of the things I love most about Jewel's music is that a large majority of it is not commercial, it's personal and one can relate to it, not dream of it. your (takes everything personal) EDA Kevin Via ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 20:19:49 +0200 From: Michiel van Gorkum Subject: jewels current presence on the music scene.... hi folks, when i read the news about jewel making her songs so intimate and private on her second album by using a band was i completely shocked. i missed silly all her concerts that she gave in holland in the year 1997 that i regret those moments still every day. why you should ask yourself ? just because jewel can bring the songs with so much inspiration and with so much jewel charming energy that you will feel very close and affected by her music . so when i know Jewel will come to holland and europe to promote her second (already hailed by critisicms as again phenomenal) album than i can really hardly wait to buy my tickets. i think you have to experience the power and the courage that people get from attending a concert of jewel. i think dar williams , famous because her songs what do i hear in these sounds, what do you love more than love, you'r aging wel... is phenomenal too. i get the opportunity to watch dar williams live in brussels belgium on monday and on tuesday dar will come and play in holland , amsterdam . so i will be excited to attend this concertgigs of dar williams. she also uses the guitar and has expressive songs and she knows how to entertain her audience as well... jewel almost continously work on new projects. i sometimes wonder how she can do this all for us fans i think . jewel is such an example of modern music artist who really can sing her songs honestly and makes us happy and sometimes cry full of emotion when we hear her songs. the absence of fear is a great example of jewel's powerful voice and explicit talents to play her guitar and the lyrics tells the story. deep water is a charming song because it teaches us i think how we need to understand each other and how to accept all of us humans living on this planet.. jewel really inspires us and gives us some kind of relief in our pressures life . i think marcel is right when he told us in a message that we have to wait and see if Jewel can achieve the same kind of depth and emotion of her songs to her public when she plays accompanied by a band in a small venue. it's only to be hoped that the authentic style of Jewel will survive. but i don't doubt that for a moment to be really optimistic. it's only a matter of 31 days and than we will hear the first song of her new album called Hands. i honestly am really excited about the lyrics of this song, the melody of this song and the voice of jewel of course too. jewel has an unique voice that can really put emotion to the song, i think this is a talent that don't have many other artists, maybe an exception to this rule are my other great singer/songwriters dar williams and tori amos. this was my opinion of the day still we wait with much desire for her new albums, all angels count your days and before we can forget it , will it be november the 17th already a historical day in the Jewel story that begin in 1994 when she released her first album Pieces Of You. In the process, I found a fan who wanted to meet Melissa Joan Hart. He typed up his experience and his failure... During a phone interview with Rachel; well...see for yourself. Melissa Joan Hart fan: Well, Rachel, I'm only trying to tell you the truth, and not make up some bogus story just to get on the show. Also, I want to ask Melissa REAL questions, not just giggle and kiss her ass like most of the fans do on your show. Rachel: All the shows aren't like that. Did you see the one on Monday? Melissa Joan Hart fan: Don't know, which one was it? Rachel: The one with Jewel, and the twins from "Sister, Sister." Melissa Joan Hart fan: Oh yeah, I saw that one. It was pretty good. The chick who interviewed Jewel was real good. She asked some decent questions. But the "Sister, Sister" twins were bogus... ~~~~~~~ The point being that Rachel used Sarah's interview as an example that not all FANatic winners were ass-kissing morons. And the fan even agreed that Sarah did a good job. Yea, Sarah! Well anyway, i guess the song touched a lot of people, i saw a lot of tears and got a 3 minute stand O. Also, i got about 13 numbers. The power of expression definetly had me that night! There was about 1000 people there and, for some reason, i didn't see a one. All i saw was the song, it's weird, i don't know. I guess that's also the power of Jewel for ya.
