(predicting the ol' sophomore jinx for both) Of course they had to do this without hearing a note from her CD, but they make a good point in my opinion, as what they say commonly happens with second CDs from artists with breakthrough first CDs. (kinda makes me wish knockout versions of Carnivore and Satellite were on the CD :-) Mike :-) http://cgi.pathfinder.com/ew/features/980925/fallmusicprev/morijewel.html Morissette & Jewel Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie With Wall Street going bonkers, here's a prediction you can bank on. In November, two pop stars will sell heaps of albums. And days later, the press will accuse them of failure. The stars are Alanis Morissette and Jewel, and their only commercial mistake is success-too much of it. Morissette's Jagged Little Pill and Jewel's Pieces of You shook the record biz by moving 16 million and 8 million copies, respectively. But as Boston, M.C. Hammer, and Hootie & the Blowfish once learned, a record-breaking debut can create impossibly high expectations for that sophomore album. "What if Alanis Morissette and Jewel come out and sell 150,000 the first week?" offers Val Azzoli, cochairman and CEO of the Atlantic Group, Jewel's label. "What happens if Alanis Morissette sells 300,000? I mean, that's fantastic! But people are gonna say, 'I don't know, that's a long way to 15 million.'" There's a catch-22 to market domination. "If Alanis makes her debut album, part two, and Jewel makes her debut album, part two, they're going to catch s--- for making the same album twice," explains RCA exec Bruce Flohr. "But if they take musical chances, people say, ŒWell, it's not as good as the last one.'" So what do the new discs sound like? Handlers are reluctant to reveal much beyond the barest facts. "The album is called Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," says Morissette's independent publicist. "Here are some song titles: 'Front Row.' 'Baba.' 'Thank U'-and thatıs with the letter U." Gee, thanks. (This we do know: It comes out Nov. 3. Glen Ballard, who concocted much of Jagged Little Pill, coproduced it. "Uninvited," the hit single from City of Angels, is not on it.) "Well, let's go deeper here," the flack goes on. "I did ask the manager if I can describe any of the music, and he said heıs not ready to go that far yet." Translation: It'll take a subpoena from Ken Starr to get Team Alanis to talk. As for Jewel, her new still-untitled album was produced by erstwhile Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard, it's due Nov. 17, and it's not an "inspirational" Christmas album, as some wags have speculated. Neither is it a batch of leftover old songs: Atlantic executives vehemently deny published reports that they scrapped a full Jewel album that was ready for release in the spring of '97. "There never was a second record that was trashed," insists Atlantic's executive vice president and general manager Ron Shapiro. "She recorded about 70 percent of an album and abandoned it, so it wasnıt even finished." Going into a Santa Monica studio over the last several months to cut her new album, Jewel opted to focus primarily on fresher, more recent tunes, instead of those from that lost session. Either way, nobody's expecting to repeat that first round of hysteria. "We went through it with Hootie," says Azzoli, "and I've said the same thing to Jewel: 'Listen, I'm in this for the long haul. Youıre going to sell 7 million the first time, and 2 million the second, and 2 million the third. Now we have a career. Now youıre a bona fide star.'" Or, as Bob Dylan once put it, "she knows there's no success like failure, and failure's no success at all." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 01:51:43 EDT From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: Spirit vs. A Darker Album >"I did go through a phase of writing songs that were very dark >and very 'f---- you all, f--- everyone, you'll never hear me >sing another sensitive song again'," she said. "But I decided it >was cowardice and not very responsible, so I want this album to >be an antidote" to all that. It sucks that Jewel feels that way. Although Spirit sounds like a very nice project, I very much would have liked to see Jewel take a stab at a darker, less sensitive album. Maybe this isn't the right part of her career for it but it's not unprecedented and often works quite well as a contrast. The example I am most familiar with is how Bruce Springsteen followed up Born to Run(an album of hope and youth and seeking the goal of freedom of liberation) with Darkness on the Edge of Town(a searing look at what happens to the people for whom those dreams don't come true). I just don't want Jewel cliched or pencilled into a genre as "sensitive girl" because all of us who know the breadth of her work know that such a narrow gneralization about her work is a false one and many of her most powerful songs are angry and embittered. It's like anyone who's read "Stand by Me" or "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" or "Gerald's Game" knows that Stephen King isn't just a horror writer but most people misinformedly confine him to that genre and think of him only as such. Jewel is more than just some light- hearted pop star who sings sensitive love songs with lilting melodies. Hopefully Spirit doesn't add to her public perception as such. (Mr.BB - if you know the scheduled New Zealand release date would you pleeeeaaaase let me know...thanx!!!) OK, criticism time... didn't Jewel say that "Fritz Creek Store" was canned because the songs were too old and didn't reflect where she was at anymore... well, then why did she decide to include "Deep Water" (and TWO VERSIONS according to the tentative track-listing) when it dates back to Jan/Feb 95???... although I'm thrilled it's gonna be included, it just doesn't make sense that other similarly-aged songs such as "Sometimes It Be That Way" and "1,000 Miles Away" have to miss out... another thing, why on earth has she decided to rename "Fragile Flame" as "Fat Boy"??? I think the new title takes away a lot of the song's impact - - what was wrong with calling it "Fragile Flame" anyway!!! while on titles, does "Hands" really sound like the title of a Jewel single??? hmmmmmmm... I'm guessing that will have a title-change before it gets released too... "Enter From The East"!!! "Absence Of Fear"!!! brilliant choices (pats Jewel on the back)... I'm predicting either one of those will become future singles... many people think Winter Song (or whatever she's deciding to call it today) should be a single but, although I think it's a great song it just doesn't sound like a single to me... I'm really glad that I haven't heard half the songs - it would be kinda disappointing to wait so long for a new album and then just end up with songs you already know, but then that's just my humble opinion... overall, I'm sure it's gonna be a FANTASTIC album, probably even better than POY!!! :-) Kim Lees Your New Zealand Angel Standing By aka The Angel Who Finally Got Himself A Homepage... http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stadium/7485/ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ **** ICQ# 9270797 - please feel free to add me to your list... **** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Where does love go if it can't find a home One moment here then gone with no forwarding address Love no longer has a house or residence in flesh" Jewel Kilcher - "Emily" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 11:38:22 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB-Andres Condon Luecadia Concert next Sunday Hi California EDAs in the Leucadia area, Jewel & Lenedra's friend Andres Condon will be performing a special concert next weekend on Sunday, September 27 at 5:00PM. I do think that art isn't a matter of winning or losing or better be as. It is a matter of taste of the receiver. Although I like/love Jewel's music for years now, still Melissa Etheridge is the artist I most relate to since the early 90's . I'm sorry mentioning this on this list but it's just true. The tremendous sound and energetic way of getting her feelings into the songs is a talent more artist are pleased to have. But Melissa always will be the one who can touch me most. It's something personal. This doesn't mean that the last show of Jewel I saw was the finest concert in my memories, because it is. I saw the tracklist and I'm happy with it. It will be a great album. The introduction of a band is something I have to hear before I will be convinced this is the right thing to do. I hope so. All my friends had doubts on whether or not bringing a band on stage next time she is going to tour. I'm scared Jewel will loose the ability to reach for those minds just using her voice and guitar. We saw lots of concerts but still not a single one like Jewel did last european tour. Hopefully the special intimite ambiance on and off stage will not get lost. I would like to get in touch with people who have seen Jewel playing with band. Email me privately please. Thanks and sweet waiting, Marcel. Yeah, but that doesn't mean all of the songs fall into that category of "not reflecting where she is at the moment". I always took it that the 1996 Bearsville recording sessions _as a whole_ package didn't reflect her or what she wanted as her second CD in this point in her career. If an "older" Jewel song fits the theme of what she wants to convey on this CD, she should use it :-) >another thing, why on earth has she decided to rename "Fragile Flame" as >"Fat Boy"??? I think the new title takes away a lot of the song's impact >- what was wrong with calling it "Fragile Flame" anyway!!! I cannot and am not going to argue/differ with that thought (as I whole heartedly agree), but unless my memory fails me, I do think "Fat Boy" was the original title of that song. (it is listed as "Fat Boy" on all my older angelfood.) We weren't sure what to call it when treeing the JewelStock tapes, but when our then contact with Jewel's management (Hiranya) was queried about "correct song titles", she told us "Fragile Flame" was the proper title for what was known as "Fat Boy". On the other hand, in a way "Fat Boy" as a title can come out and hit you like a ton of bricks. I can certainly see someone seeing that title (not knowing the song at all) and wondering with a bit more anticipation as to "what is this song?" and be *initially* impacted MORE by the song, being they may have been expecting something totally different than the incredibly moving song they were about to hear for the first time. I've seen Jewel change song titles often in the two and a half short years that I've had a close eye on her career, so it would not surprise me at all to see "Fat Boy" or "Fragile Flame" or an altogether new title for the song when the CD comes out. (My honest opinion is she chose "Fat Boy" simply because it was probably the original title, and wanted to restore it) >while on titles, does "Hands" really sound like the title of a Jewel >single??? hmmmmmmm... I'm guessing that will have a title-change before >it gets released too... To be honest, yeah, to me it did. She's got well over 500 songs and I've seen the titles of probably half of them. I mean, two years ago right now we were expecting "oddball Jewel song titles" Satellite and Carnivore to be the next released singles, all the while we were almost having onlist pools as to how long into a TV interview it was going to take for her to say "hands manifest thought". (remember those days vets?) As soon as I heard the title "Hands" I immediately felt it fit as a Jewel song title. (it's odd how I had a totally different feeling on that title....but that's what's good about a list like this...it fuels discussion :-) >"Enter From The East"!!! "Absence Of Fear"!!! brilliant choices (pats >Jewel on the back)... I'm predicting either one of those will become >future singles... I myself am jazzed that Absence Of Fear is on this CD...it was my immediate new favorite when she debuted it on MTVs' 120 Minutes April(?) 1996. (my God, was it really two and a half years ago?) I'm also jazzed that there's a good mixture of totally new songs, some very familiar songs, and some slightly known songs. As soon as I saw the track list, I figured this would be a CD the tride and true Jewel fan will enjoy. It'll certainly help me get through my least favorite month of the year, November, the first month ALL the trees are bare :-( Mike :-) - - * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand, * or have a burning question about Jewel and/or the list, * The Jewel/EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * Many basic Jewel and list questions can be answered there :-) * * If you can't find the answer on the page have any list related * questions, please feel free to email me at ducksoup@spectra.net * or you can IM me on either of the AOL names below: * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL or AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #494 ***************************
