Alice "The Sleepy Angel" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 14:56:28 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB-Jewel's NEW ALBUM /Single/Video Hi all, Well, you'll all be very happy to know that Jewel's album is essentially finished. Recording wrapped up about two weeks ago & they are doing final touches & mixes as I write this. The recording sessions, with Patrick Leonard in the production chair, went really well. (The studio was located on a large ranch & Jewel was able to take her horse along for horseback riding diversions between sessions.) As you already know, the North American release date is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17th, 1998. Everything is still on target for that release date to be met. The title of Jewel's new album is "SPIRIT". Proceeding the release of her new album "SPIRIT", will be the first single titled "Hands". This single is scheduled to hit the radio stations on October 19th. (Extra cuts/remixes on the single have not yet been determined.) In the next few weeks, Jewel will also shoot a promo video for "Hands" & that should hit MTV & VH1 by late October or early November to coincide with the album release. I realize none of you have ever heard this song since its never been performed live, but I can tell you that "Hands" is really beautiful (& one of the most spiritual songs she's ever written). Some of you noticed that an AOL profile was recently added to Jewel's [JewelJK@aol.com] website email address & it has the quote "In the end, only kindness matters". This quote is a line from "Hands". The finalized tracklist has not yet been determined, but should be confirmed in the next week or so. As usual, Jewel recorded more songs than can possibly fit on the album. The tentative tracklist (still subject to change, of course!) for "SPIRIT" includes the following songs: 1. "Nothing Without Love" -this is a shorter sparsely orchestrated slow acoustic version of "Deep Water" which may or may not be included. 2. "Barcelona" - this is an awesome new one written during last years European tour. EDAs were treated to an earlier version of this at the Java Joe's EDA Thanksgiving Concert last year. This is with full band & has that ominous haunting quality of "Last Dance Rodeo". Its one of those songs where she begins singing in her lowest register & then lets her voice soar on the "Let me fly" chorus. 3."Down So Long"-aka "Been Down So Long". This is an old Innerchange era song resurrected with full band arrangement. This was played almost every gig last year on her "Papillon" Tour. 4. "What's Simple Is True" -aka "Winter Song". Beautiful song, touching lyrics & a sparse arrangement (that has hints of a Rickie Lee Jones "Ghostyhead" album influence, in my opinion.) 5. "Jupiter"- my personal favorite at the moment. Very different approach for Jewel. GREAT lyrics!! Another new one with band. 6. "Songs Of Freedom"- another new one. Partially inspired by a tape I gave Jewel that included Bob Marley's "Redemption Song". (Yo Pete! I know you are doing backflips over this concept!) 7. "Kiss The Flame"- another new one written during last years European tour. One of her most poetic lyrics & very pretty. You may have heard the clip of Jewel playing this on the recent 17 Magazine TV special. 8. "Fat Boy"-aka "Fragile Flame". Solo acoustic version. 9."Stranger(Enter From The East)"- absolutely gorgeous! 10."Innocence Maintained"- full band arrangement(I hear those EDA"Yeeha!'s) 11."Do You?"-another new one with band, written during the movie. 12."Hands" - the first single & video(see above), with band 13."Deep Water"- I know almost everyone wanted this! :-) It's a full band version & a bit different arrangement than live versions. 14. "Absence Of Fear"- stark band arrangement, beautiful vocal, need I say more? That's likely what will be on the new album & the current assembly of song order. As you know from Jewel's website & previous posts, quite a few other songs were also recorded & may or may not wind up on singles as extra cuts, and are not scheduled for the album. Well, that brings you totally up to date. There's a lot to look forward to & I'm quite sure everyone here will find something new to love on this album as well as a few of your "wish-list" songs. The new ones are quite amazing & there's a lot of lyric content that I'm sure will inspire you personally (as well as inspire posts galore upon release!!). Have a wonderful day! MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 11:04:37 -0400 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: !! Article on New Album - Spirit http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/sep17_jewel.html Jewel releasing her Spirit in November By JOHN SAKAMOTO Executive Producer, Jam! Showbiz The follow-up to the 10-million-selling debut album by Jewel now has a title and an official release date. Called "Spirit", it will be in stores in Canada and the U.S. on Nov. 17, Warner Music Canada has announced. The album will be preceded by a single, "Hands". That track is scheduled to hit radio airwaves on Oct. 19. In addition, a video for "Hands" will be shot during the first week of October. "Spirit" was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Patrick Leonard, best known for his work with Madonna. That alliance appears at odds with the nature of the new material Jewel has said she's been working on this year. "I'm writing more classical type music for it, so you'll hear more (of an) aria type, if everything works out well," she told Jam! Music writer Karen Bliss when Jewel's book of poetry, "A Night Without Armor", was published this spring. Saying she was struggling to find an "antidote" to things that frighten her about life in 1998, she added, "There are things that help me, like meditating or prayer or fairy tales, reading bedtime stories, things that enlighten your imagination and don't just capitalize on fear," she said, "so I'd like the album to be like that as well. "I did go through a phase of writing songs that were very dark and very 'f---- you all, f--- everyone, you'll never hear me sing another sensitive song again'," she said. "But I decided it was cowardice and not very responsible, so I want this album to be an antidote" to all that. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 21:38:00 +0200 From: Michiel van Gorkum Subject: jewel's new cd : really amazingly info for us true true fans from Mr BB. Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk hello all jewelfans, the news of Mr Abershaw, our one and only inside information hero about Jewel told us some really good news! As soon as i read the entire title tracklist i was completely stunned! It is such a nice information that Jewel really was making her best of the records and we are all happy and thankful to Jewel , for making such beautiful music ! When i read the mail today was i in dreamland. The title hands and the whole Spirtuality issue interest us fans of Jewel very much. We all can't wait to buy her new album, and we are so excited for the extra songs that will be likewise on the singlecd's to be released. When i understand things rightly, the release will be headed for 17th November this year. But what i was wondering about the fact if Jewel can make a double album , so that their can be put more songs on the new Jewel cd. It would please us fans of Jewel i think the most. But any new song that Jewel made will be excited to long to , i am pretty sure about that. Jewel needs to tour her new album as well in Holland, as we all praise Jewel for her fantastic music and her undoubtedly written lyrics. I can not imagine at this moment a better Singer/Songwriter than Jewel. Her whole imagination and interpretation about life is something that really makes me sometimes cry of full emotion she puts into her songs. As far as i am concerned nobody can do that better than Jewel. What i think is a nice new way of Jewel approaching her music is the help of a band, that makes songs sometimes different from her playing the guitar so superbly. I am also very excited to tell you that since i like Jewel, i also admire Dar Williams . She will be touring in Holland and Belgium after this weekend, and to be honest it is a shame that both Jewel and Dar Williams haven't the recognitizon of our local tv/radio networks so that we fans of Jewel & Dar can listen to it. What i finally want to ask Mr Abershaw is if the whole new video of Jewel's new album will also be released in Holland ? Can you already give us some more ideas about that ? And i know i asked it before , but the wish follows the desire :) will Jewel tour for a long period, in other words will this be a Tour for a couple of months hitting all the major cities in Europe and America in 1998/1999 ? I sincerely hope so , because i want to attend as many as possible concerts of Jewel !! Greetings, and Jewel you bring us happiness everyday with your songs, your way of life and your natural behavior of all your succes lately. It's amazing to realize that you are working on all this projects with so much energy and joy. We all fans of you enjoy and appreciate that a lot. That's for all now folks :)) Who follows this Jewel positive mail? And replies to my ideas !
