Jewel may have touched a lot of people (all EDAs being a testament to such) but I don't think she is a revolutionary in the proper sense of the word. She has influenced many people, produced many kind acts, inspired people but has she really caused a revolution or changed the fabric of society? Unfortunately, as much as I like it, I don't think she qualifies I know some people might think I've desecrated some grave by saying this but I wouldn't put her on my list of most influential revolutionaries for this century. Some of you have written that it IS on the album and it took me to heaven. Just wonderfull. Thanks BB for your quick reaction !! And for those who haven't read it before I will explain what this song does to me....... In november last year we (a group of fanatic musicfriends) have been to the second Jewel concert in Amsterdam that year. The first was a showcase but this time the large room was filled. It was a seated concert (which is highly unusual as in my memory). We had fun making bets on Don't as an opening. We won :-)) In the middle of the concert we tried to request some songs and a friend succeeded in getting "his" Last Dance Rodeo. The afternoon before I had made my friends crazy about IM. They even discussed on not taking me inside :-) Just in a moment I wrote a paper with IM (large ofcoarse) and layed it on stage, she smiled and looked at me. I thought I would be rude if I shouted the title to her and I thought it was just the right solution. (If Jewel doesn't make setlists we will :-))))) And then the moment was there. After her friendly look and smile the first notes of IM came to me. The song blew me away. Especially because it was clear she was doing this for me...... All night I had been writing the titles on paper so I could mail them to you. But IM was the cause a friend had to overtake it from me. We were lucky receiving some autographs afterwards. These concerts (both) are just number 1 and 3 on my all-time-concert-list. (2 is Melissa Etheridge (never enough tour) in Rotterdam 1992) So, thanks again for your reactions. Enjoy the album! And for those who haven't IM on there album-song-wish-list: you won't feel misserable on IM on the album, I guarantee ! Jewel may have touched a >lot of people [...] inspired people but has she really >caused a revolution or changed the fabric of society? >Unfortunately, as much as I like it, I don't think she qualifies I have to agree with David here... I wouldn't consider Jewel a "revolutionary" artist in the sense that she isn't doing something totally new & different with her music, her poetry, or anything else... her music, and way of expressing herself has touched a lot of people, but I don't think she's changed the fundamental workings of our society, and I don't think that her music is necessarily anything that's absolutely new & different. Her music's very enjoyable, and has a good message... she's a very positive role model... but I wouldn't call her a revolutionary. However, she's young, and still growing and evolving as an artist, though... so it's certainly possible that at some point, she will do things that are revolutionary... but so far, I wouldn't call anything she's done "revolutionary." The problem is that I just wouldn't know what so say. I know so little about Jewel, but I love Pieces of You (the album) and it's one of my favorite albums of all time, so naturally Jewel is one of my favorite singers of all time. It's really great to see that Jewel has so many adoring fans. I really envy all of you, who get to watch all those things they broadcast about her. Over here in Germany you have a pretty tough time being a Jewel fan. I think she appeared on one TV show - and of course I missed it! Anyhow, as you can see, I clearly don't have anything interesting to say, but I just have this urge to post something. Sorry, for taking up all the space. What I'd like to know is how many members belong to this digest? And does each and every member have his own 'angel' name? I'm so psyched about Jewel's new CD and I hope they release it in Germany. I can't wait to hear new songs. Not that I'm tired of the old ones - not in the least. Well, take care and maybe I'll have something meaningful to say sometime soon... She has this to say about Jewel: "...In America I remember sitting on a hillside with my boyfriend watching the headline acts and the atmosphere was very charged and emotional. There was a different buzz to your average tour or festival. And the thing is, a lot of these artists are amazing performers. Jewel was scary, she has absurd amounts of talent and charisma. I've never seen anyone like that before. Plus she oozes sex appeal big time..." Chris. PS. Are there many Brits going to next Wednesday's Lilith Fair? BLOOD DONATION DRIVE Blood donation is a very important to us all. Blood plasma supplies are continually in demand, and most communities have public blood drives to meet this need. If there is no drive currently in your community, contact your local hospital or the Red Cross for instructions on how to donate. The Red Cross can be found online at www.redcross.org There are some age and physical restrictions, but if you are able and willing to become a blood donor, it's a great habit to get into! We had a great response to last summer's list blood drive, and hope to hear from even more EDAs who participate this time! CLEANING THE EARTH'S OCEANS AND WATERWAYS If you're intersted in the environment, and the health of our oceans and inland waterways, there is a great opportunity available to get involved in your community over the next several weeks, and catch a few more rays on the beach! The Center for Marine Conservation (CMC) sponsors many cleanups worldwide, with an annual participation of over 150,000 of our fellow "environmental angels". This coming weekend (September 19th) will mark the 17th annual International Coastal Cleanup. Coordinators across the country target shore, beach and underwater sites, and provide event coordination, supplies and tracking materials for all volunteers. What happens at these cleanups? Typically the volunteer group arrives at the site and is given brief instructions and supplies (gloves, collection bags and data cards). They then pair off, with one volunteer collecting debris and the other recording data (what is found) for what becomes part of an amazing statistical study of our planet's health! In addition to actually cleaning up our water, it also gives many groups legislative leverage to prevent and correct future pollution. Thus, the volunteers' efforts work on many different levels. For more information on the CMC online, visit www.cmc-ocean.org. Anyone interested in finding out if there are CMC events in their local area can email the EDAF at edafinfo@aol.com and we will send you a contact name, telephone number and email address. Make sure you include where you're located in your email. THE EVERYDAY ANGELS FOUNDATION (EDAF) Founded by EDAs from this very list, the EveryDay Angels Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization committed to making our world a little better through sharing with and caring for others. Inspired by the philosophies and sensibilities of Jewel Kilcher, we seek to promote volunteerism in the areas of youth development, education and environmental protection, work to ensure that people's basic needs (food, clothing and shelter) are met, and encourage other public service projects.
