Pepper's, Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, The Stones Exile on Main Street, Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited (+ many others), Jon Mitchell's Blue, The Eagles Hotel California, Igg Pop's Funhouse, Fleetwood Mac Rumours, The Sex Pistols Mind the Bollocks, Nirvana's Nevermind etc. etc. etc. and based on this perspective, Jewel's Pieces of You is certainly one of the top albums of this or any decade -- for any and all of its technical or stylistic "imperfections" it's a perfectly realized statement of an artist's being -- and that's what matters in historical context; Jewel herself has moved on and grown since she recorded it, and looking back she sees how much her guitar playing has improved, or whatever, but none of that really changes the innate beauty of POY or diminishes its power to speak to millions of people; that is a rare and precious element that no amount of technical expertise, production values, additional practice or anything can add up to... music is about heart and soul much more than it is about instrumental virtuosity or more scientific measurements of phrasing or lyricism a few artists are capable of creating several recordings that meet a level of perfect realization -- that includes the intangibles; most don't even make one record that has the poetic power of Pieces of You -- if Jewel is capable of making another record equal, but different, to POY we'll be very blessed ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1998 13:23:33 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Re: just a note, Pieces of You IS one of the 90s top 10 albums this discussion reminded me of the liner notes written by music reviewer Michael Brooks for the reissue of Lady in Satin by Billie Holiday (my favourite singer of all time and her last album recorded in 1958, before her death in 1959); in part, he wrote: "This album is an intensely autobiographical study: the voice is an open wound, the vocal chords flayed by the acid of racism and commercial indifference and I defy anyone to sit and listen to it without the tears welling. Lady in Satin is a political statement made by one of the great artists of the 20th century and an essential album for any lover of jazz. When this album was first issued I was working for a London newspaper and writing (unpaid) record reviews for a political propaganda sheet. It was the type of rag that is stuffed through mailboxes at dead of night by enthusiastic volunteers and deposited, with admirable expedience, into garbage cans by the recipients. But the editor did allow me a free platform. I remember sinking my milk teeth into Lady In Satin with all the fervor of a Hollywood poolside anarchist. At the time the movie The Inn of the Sixth Happiness was going the rounds and I compared Billie's performance to that of Robert Donat, dying of asthma, who croaked and rattled his way through his last role so that he could leave some money to his teenage children. Both the film and Lady in Satin appalled me, and I ended my review by calling it the worst record she had ever made. Now I shudder at my callowness, for although my opinion is basically unchanged from a technical viewpoint, you cannot judge such a work by technical standards alone, any more than you should ridicule the elderly Duse for playing Juliet or condemn a Renoir painted when the artist's hands were crippled by arthritis." Similarly, those who judge POY by its technical standards, or based on Jewel's youth or nascent song-writing abilities are missing the point -- and the true artist brilliance of POY. In these too cool, too ironic, too pseudo-intellectual times, it's so easy to be critical and to find flaws in the fabric of a creation at the same time as failing to recognize the real value of something. "top ten" lists and all are meant just for fun, it's such a subjective equation that they can't mean anything more; but just like those who under-appreciated (or were even appalled by!) by Billie Holiday's Lady in Satin (recorded at the end of her career and too short life), there may one day be a re-evaluation of POY (recorded at the start of Jewel's career, early in life) by those who are currently stuck using their brains or typical technical measurements and may not be hearing the heart of this recording; for all those who really love this album, it's still not given it's full due by some -- but that's always the way things go... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1998 21:48:39 EDT From: IKKI1214@aol.com Subject: Jewel Chat Jewel Here's a private chat I made for all the AOL members out there that are EDA's I'm sorry for the other's I'm working on another chat room so please forgive me I hope that you join me : ) Bye EDA's.... ~Nikki~ - -The Short Angel- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #474 ***************************
