Hi Angels, Just a thought or two about Jewel and god/God and capitalization in ANWA. The Oprah show has only recently been shown here in Australia and so I couldn't comment before. Baker, the dropped angel, said: "I always thought she valued god as being a more nature-orientated being (such as in animism)". I would tend to agree with this. But, while Jewel did do a bit of nodding along with Oprah and used the word God in what in the context was a Judeo-Christian sense, she did try to make some distinctions from Oprah's position (or what I have been told is Oprah's position, as I have never watched the show before - I understand she is an orthodox (with a small "o") Christian - by stressing humanity, being human as a fundamental value. Also, there was the choice of song she sang. Someone on the list asked why she sang WWSYS and not a more recent hit like FG. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I felt it was a definite choice: "Who will save your soul, if you don't save your own!" And: "we pray to as many gods as there are flowers and call religion our friend!!" Hardly orthodox Christianity. So I guess Jewel was playing safe with Oprah's audience, and pushing her book, and (I think) putting a big qualification of her own on what she said for those with ears to hear it. But, on the other hand, I noticed a change in the words of "Nikos" as I was listening, just this morning, to the tape of a concert Jewel did last year. I will have to check, but I think she changed "an illegitimate son in God's eye has no worth" to something else, less critical of God/religion. So maybe her attitude to God has changed. I always felt that line in "Nikos" was very important in her attitde to religion, particularly organised religion. As for ANWA, there are quite a few typos and inconsistencies in it like god/God. As an editor myself, I think it could have used a good editor to make it just that little bit better (like most books). Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Aug 1998 00:57:30 EDT From: LastDance0@aol.com Subject: EDA's & quilt Im a little angry. It might be a matter of mistake, but I think it might be a case of literary license. A "God" is the Almighty God/Jehovah/Allah(whatever name you wish to use...no offense to anyone). A "god" is a general deity, which in some mythologies are simple mortals which have superior abilities to other mortals. She might be referring in the poem in her way generally to a deity instead of the Almighty God Himself. Hi all, This may be a controversial post, but please read it knowing that I still like all the people who's posts I'm commenting on. I'm also simply trying to help those who may not understand some EDA/Jewel history to see it more clearly. If you feel insulted by anything I'm about to say, please don't feel that way. Try to see if it relates to you & if not, simply ignore it. I've been sitting back watching 2 current projects unfold & I see a facet of both of them I like very much. But unfortunately, I also see another facet of both I dislike very much. Explain MrBB!! OK. The EDAs have done some amazing things over the years, the best of which have been SELFLESS acts of kindness that have had dramatic impacts on both the recipients of these acts as well as for the EDAs that have participated. I won't go into all these things, but the best was undoubtably when the entire list organized in April of 1997 to help a San Diego "hit & run" victim named James P Kalanick, who had no insurance. James was in need of a van outfitted with special lift equipment so that he could be mobile, return to work & resume a more enjoyable life. The EDAs were incredible & raised quite a lot of money which was donated to the JPK Fund & helped James accomplish these goals. But beyond that (& more important, in my opinion), EDAs hung out with James, turned him on to music, brought him to shows & took all this to one more important level--friendship. This was a wonderful experience for all involved & demonstrated that the EDAs were taking Jewel's messages to heart & "finding where positive change can be made" & doing it. I'm following these current project ideas & I see a trend happenning (with some EDAs-not all) where I think the motivation behind participating is very ill focused. What do I mean, you ask? I don't want to single anybody out, but to help clarify my thoughts on all this, I need to use some anonymous recent EDA quotes. someone said: <> This post almost said what I was thinking, regarding selfless acts & I want to say that I think the "angelbook" being compiled for a children's hospital is a very cool idea! What bummed me out just a little bit was when the same person said: <> OK, granted, no big deal on asking & I think Jewel would enjoy whats being done here, but then I read someone else say (in regards to the quilt project): <> Although, I believe everyone's heart is in the right place with this, I think this post demonstrates where some might be getting off track. What do I mean by that? A response to the above post, brings my point about this issue into much clearer focus: Someone responded saying: <> I hope you are beginning to see what I'm getting at. I think many of you need to ask yourself a question that only you can answer. That question is, "Are we doing this as a selfless act of kindness or are we doing this because we desire even more recognition from Jewel? Unfortunately, I see too many EDAs falling into the latter category & not nearly enough in the former. I'm not trying to downgrade the actual projects themselves, because both are pretty cool, in my opinion, but its important to remember the goals behind these projects. In the case of the AngelBook, the goal is obviously the smile on the faces of the children at that hospital. This is GREAT!! Would Jewel enjoy knowing about this? I believe she would, but rather than sending her a copy, why not write her at the website address & tell her about it? That works easily & is something they've encouraged from DAY 1 at the website. The quilt idea is also a cool idea, but why not find a recipient who would benefit from this effort far more than Jewel? Like that same childrens hospital, for instance? Maybe tie the two projects together somehow? This, personally, makes a lot more sense to me & shows Jewel that you understand her. She has said countless times that she prefers EDAs NOT send her things, but rather take the gifts you'd like to send to her & send them in both yours & her name to people who might truly benefit from them. I feel many are motivated by the wrong reasons. If your reason for doing these things is for "Jewel to notice me" or "she might bring it up or even show it next time shes on TV", then you are missing the boat, in my opinion. Please think about this & see how it applies to you. Anyway, if you think you'd like to join, reply to me privately. Make the subject read Join Jewels Other Angels. (That's the name of the club). At least come by and check out the club page.
