It was cool she told the pot story and then she sang I thought i saw you last night. It was cool. Then another performer was on i think he name was Rufus something he was pretty good. Finally Lisa Loeb was on she was incredible plus she even had a special guest Dwezil Zappa he played electric Guitar on half of the songs it was real cool. well that's about it talk to you guys later Ohh Wait i have 4 One left Shoe Post cards if anyone wants one email me the 1st four get them Chris Pepsi Drinking Angel http://members.aol.com/Narciso45/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 20:46:26 +0100 From: "Gancanagh" Subject: Jewel on MTV O.K. Am I right? Hello... I think this is a rather large generalization on your part... speaking for myself, I'm not much of a fan of Fastball (did anybody else get sick of hearing "The Way" every 5 minutes? I didn't like it too much when I first heard it, and it certainly didn't grow on me.), Elizabeth Hummel, or Cindy Lee Berryhill. (Fans of the previous three bands/singers - mind you, I'm not saying the music's bad, but I am saying the music doesn't do too much for me, personally. :) I do like Steve Poltz, but I knew who he was before I knew he had any connection to Jewel, so I certainly wasn't hoping to hang with Steve, and somehow meet Jewel, when I started liking him. And then she'd fall madly in love with me, too, right? :) (Now that I've established my indie cred...) Your basic criticism seems to be that anybody who is exposed to a singer or band because of their association with another, more renowned artist, doesn't really *like* them. Now, if growing up in the same town the band is playing in is a prerequisite for really liking them, I guess I'm S.O.L., and I've been kidding myself all these years when I say "I like this song/band". As far as I know, no bands or singers of note have ever come out of Millbury, Massachusetts. :) I will admit to having been exposed to Patty Griffin through this list, and yes, I did buy her album on the say-so of people who are or were on this list. I didn't buy her album, Living With Ghosts, just because she performed at JewelStock, though... I bought it because I heard a lot of people on this list saying, "She was fantastic!" after JewelStock. Figuring that people on this list would have musical tastes similar (or at least overlapping in points) to mine, I thought it was a fairly safe bet, given the amount of good press on the list, that I'd like her album. I bought it, and loved it. I might even go so far as to say that I like Patty's music a bit more than I like Jewel's. The jury's out on that, though. I don't think there's anything wrong with getting into someone's music because of their association with another musician you happen to like... I think it has very little to do with a "Oh, Jewel likes , and hangs out with , so I have to like , too, so maybe I can meet Jewel." type of mentality on the part of people on this list... to assume that, I think, is to horribly underestimate the capacity for thought of the people on this list. There's a lot of great artists out there that don't get a chance to be heard on a wide scale, simply because they're not deemed "radio friendly" enough, and they won't attract a big enough slice of a radio station's target demographics. Would I ever have heard of Elizabeth Hummel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Steve Poltz, or Fastball if they weren't "from" San Diego, like Jewel? Would I have ever heard of Patty Griffin, if she didn't play JewelStock, and get good reviews afterwards from people on this list? Possibly not... maybe even probably not. Is it a bad thing that people from all over the country who subscribe to this list are now hearing of them, and hearing their music? Definitely not. If I was a serious musician, and trying to survive off of my music, I think I'd welcome ANY chance at a little bit of publicity, and word-of-mouth recommendations. Hell, I'd probably kill to get it. You don't have to live in the same city as a musician to like their music, and you certainly aren't any less of a fan of someone's music, just because you heard of them through their association with another artist you already like. I can't even begin to count the number of CD's in my collection that I l ove, but that were bought with the thought, "Well, I've heard they're really good from some friends, so maybe I'll give them a try." Living in Central Mass., as I do, which is not really what you could consider a severely urban area, the radio stations don't play a lot of stuff that I tend to like... I'll take recommendations any which way I can get them, be it from artists I already like, friends, family, even total strangers. Maybe if I lived in or just outside of a larger city with radio stations that played more than hard rock, alternative rock, or Top 40, I'd have the luxury of telling people "I liked them for like 5 years before you ever *heard* of them." If I did that, though... I hope my friends would have the sense to throw me through a window, or at least beat me, because liking someone's music... it just isn't a pissing contest. You don't get 50 extra "Fan Points" for having heard of a band before somebody else did. I would think that a true fan would attempt to spread the word about their favorite band to people who would also maybe appreciate the music, not get disgruntled and grumble when other people start enjoying the band's music, or attempt to belittle the "late bloomers" who have never heard the band before. That's all for me. That was called..something like Chime the Bells, wasn't it? I forget, myself :) Anyways, I liked when she performed with her mother.. Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer(spelling?:). I liked especially when they went through it the second time, and Jewel added some harmony to a bit of it. I remember seeing that the first time, but only saw the second half of it...I'm happy I caught the whole thing last night. She sounded so beautiful. I've never been able to catch her in concert, but can't wait until I'll get the chance! Live Forever, Megan LIST MODERATOR NOTE: The song Jewel performed with her father Atz was not "Chime Bells". VH1 made a mistake. (You'd think they'd have corrected the mistakes on this "all new installment") The title of the song is in fact "Yo". ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 22:17:31 EDT From: SRM420@aol.com Subject: Jewel chats? Well, what do you say we keep one going in Arts and Entertainment? I usually do chat with a few friends there, and if you want, join in anytime. We only chat at night, around 11:00 pm to whenever (Eastern). Tonight I won't be on, cause I haven't slept since last Monday (only very slightly exagerrated, WiddleyPud [Lesley] knows). Tomorrow night at 10:30 pm Eastern, why don't some of you AOL guys drop by? We'd love to actually get a crowd there, and I wish there was a way that ALL angels could join in on a chat, not AOL, mIRC, Java, or other types of chat that everyone can't use.
