Hi EDAs, For those of you who don't know me, (which is probably 99% of you - I don't post often, especially when there's a "feud" going on..) my name is Heather. I'm 17 years old and, of course, am a huge fan of Jewel. I would love to meet/get to know many EDAs, so feel free to drop me an email anytime. I always write back (I'm an AOL addict) and I would love to get to know fellow fans! ~Take Care~ Heather HMN333@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 10:27:36 -0400 From: "Carrie Smith" Subject: Liking San Diego Artists because of Jewel I just wanted to say that I don't think a lot of people would start liking someone because they collaborated with Jewel -- I think that is a great way to discover new artists though, because they collaborate with someone else... Honestly, I discovered Steve Poltz almost by accident... I remembered reading about his album and I was in Borders one day, I was looking for something different and I tried out "One Left Shoe" I stood there and listened to the whole thing --- Then, I remembered who he was... After seeing Steve live, I picked up the Lisa Sanders disc, because he performed Rainbow and I loved the song .... (In amongst all of this, I haven't listened to POY in awhile...) I have discovered a lot of artists this way, I love Mark Eitzel's disc West, and I picked it up cause I read Peter Buck collaborated on it... There is nothing wrong with liking someone because they have worked with one of your favorite artists.... Like I said, it's a great way to discover something new... I read your question on the Jewel discussion list. I don't know if anyone has already answered your question, but here is all I know. The three "Chinese" people in the FG video are what are called kabuki women. According to the VH-1 "pop-up video" version, Jewel had said that they represent the cello you hear throughout the song. (BTW in Japanese theater, kabuki is a type of play (either drama or comedy), in which the actors use elaborate costumes and stylized gesture, music and dancing. This is why you see the women with heavy amounts of make-up on.) About your second question, I'm not really sure if that's the first YWMFM because I've never seen the entire video. All I know is that Sean Penn had directed it & I had heard that, in it, Jewel watches her boyfriend make-out with anoher girl. There is a short clip from this video ( about 1.2 meg/ 30 sec.) on the VH-1 website at http://www.vh1.com/insidevh1/access/lilith98/index.tin (You'll have to scroll down until you see Jewel's picture in the left-hand side & click on it. Then you can either view it or download it.) Well, I hope that helps. Hey, EDA's! I recently made a post about the Jewel bio I made, and I wanna thank everyone who took the time to reply. I have about twenty-five, or thirty! :) Someone e-mailed me and asked fer a copy of the tape once it is done, if anyone else wants a copy, please let me know! I'd be hapy to make one. This bio thing has gotten a little more exciting, because we will be sending a copy of it along with a letter to Jewel! :) Since she'll be viewing this video masterpiece (lol) sometime, I'll also be taking questions, fan letters, comments, and anything else you'd like Jewel to see/have. E-mail vixen118@yahoo.com. I can't guarantee everything will be on the film, but it will be sent along with the vid and letter to Jewel. I'm also looking fer a Jewel T-shirt. Not one like the EDA one, but the one like Sarah was wearing on FANatic. If anyone knows where I can get one, let me know ASAP! :) Thanks, and I hope fer more replies. :) Thank you all, ~LiViA tHe SpORtY AngEl~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 12:15:24 EDT From: PIGLET0404@aol.com Subject: Angel book Hey all you EDAs!! I just wanted to post before I leave for church camp tonight about sarah Elizabeth's angel book!! :o) If any of you haven't told her you're going to make a page, I really think you should!! It's for such a good cause, and what are the "everyday angels" better at than good causes?!?! :o) For those of you who don't know what this is, sarah Elizabeth (LastDance0@aol.com) is Miss Milwaukie, and her project to help others, is to create an Angel Book for a children's hospital near her. She's asked us all to take an 8.5x11 sheet of paper and by either drawing, painting, coloring, computing, or any other manner, put an angel on that paper and color it in. Then you send it to her by August 10th...email her for her address...and she'll get it published in the book! :o) I'm gonna be out of town, stranded without email for the week, so make sure you respond to sarahElizabeth about this! :o) Love y'all!! Beth The Wondering Angel (once again) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 12:38:57 From: joe-schmo Subject: re: Strange List Sorry its taken me so long to reply. I am posting both to the list and to you privately, just so people on the list have a chance to read what I have to say as well, and so that I don't have to write two posts. Anyhow....First I would like to welcome you to the EDA list. Awhile back we had an "Adopt A Newbie" program that people on the list volunteered to kind of 'adopt' new members and help them through some stuff, meeting people, or whatever. Soon the 'newbies' were no long all that new, and then they could return the adoption by adopting their own newbie. From what I understand, the Adopt A Newbie program saw some difficulties, and worked through them for awhile, and has since disolved away, but in any case, welcome to the list! In the past few years as a list member, I have witnessed a lot of things, and I have to admit that sometimes I was rather insulted by them, and unfortunately, I think I've probably done my fair share of insulting. I remember specifically, about a year or two ago, people decided to discuss some incredibly strange things that really had no relevance to anything anybody cared about, but eventually the threads died, and the members either left the list, or they moved on to more 'list acceptable' topics. I haven't really talked with Mike (the list manager/owner...are you the owner now, mike?) about it personally, but I don't think his intentions are to be a dictator, and I don't think he wants to tell us what we can and can't post about. It would be almost impossible with all the relevant topics that could be posted. This list is in my opinion, very open to speak about whatever we want. Any government professor or teacher will tell you that if you as a people want something bad enough, you will bind together and force the governemnt to do what you want it to do, and most times, it works! I'm not saying to badger and overthrow Mike, but if 2,000 members write him and say, "Hey, we want this", he'd probably better listen, or he's gunna lose his list. Mike as the moderator of this list has done a wonderful job. I get frustrated with him all the time, because I spend a lot of time writing a note, and then sending it, only to receive it back in my mailbox a few minutes or hours later, with a message from Mike saying that he wont let it go through, or it just refelcts what someone else just said. Sure, I was a little ticked, but then came to the realization that, hey, why should i send this to 5,000 people when they've already read it a dozen times! I think, but again, haven't discussed it with Mike at all, that he is trying to move away from the total moderations, or has moved away from it. Perhaps this time after Bearsville 98 is a trial time. Just to test us, and see how we do without moderation, and to see if we can resolve our disputes without people leaving the list, and without name calling, and all that grand stuff. Who knows...... Wow...My post is getting pretty long, and if you all are anything like me, you often skip over the really long ones, so I'll just wrap it up right here. Take Care, joe >I've only been part of the list for a few weeks now - well...maybe a month. >Whatever. I truly believe that if you give the list enough time, and if you stick with it, that you will see that this list isn't all about bickering about Jewel and other artists. Its about loving and caring for one-another. Its about being with and spending time with eachother. Its not just about Jewel, its just that Jewel is the tie that binds us. Its about everything in life....music, relationships, feelings, emotions, criticisims, hurt and pain, and laughter and joy, and whatever else you can think of. Hey all, Although unsurprisingly none of you noticed I was gone, I have been away from the list for about two months now. Lets see, I had to unsubscribe right at the time of the release of A Night Without Armor. Anyway, for reasons beyond my control, namely my e-mail going !BANG! and refusing to work, and trial exams (Note to 16 year old English EDA's : Don't do A-Level Economics!), I have been cut off from everything EDA. Now I have the time and my e-mail is sorted out, I have decided to re-subscribe and become a fully functioning EDA again :) Because of the fact I live in the UK, my only way of finding out what is happening with Jewel (new releases, TV appearances etc) is through this list. What I am really asking is that although I seem to have rejoined in the midst of a full-blown argument about an Oprah appearance, would it be too much to ask if a very kind someone could please e-mail me a short summary of what has been going on with both the EDAs and with Jewel since ooh, mid to late May time? I would really appreciate this as I know lots has been going on over the last two months, just from reading EDA and Jewel related stuff on the web. Thank you all very much, I really appreciate this. My wonderful cousin David (definately an everyday insightful angel), who works at Starbucks, has met Jewel. (Oh to be him.) Below is his letter to me. Sam the ? angel I was thinking of angels when I turned and saw her, standing shyly in line, a soft glow surrounding her, protecting her from the cynical hate of the routine mongers in line. I froze, only for a second, but long enough for the arrow to strike. Those eyes! They filled the frame, nothing else existed, entrancing. Soon, I heard the noises, the sounds of the ocean gently soothing my lobes. Could I go on? I did. It was only a second. I managed a smile, self conciously trying to warn her of my weakened state, but she accepted, smiling back with acknowledgment. I had to go on, there were people expecting my help, addicts who couldn't possibly face the day without my gift of caffeine. I would soon face her. I turned to pour, back again to the line, on and on, each time looking up at my angel, as if on cue she looked back. Shyly smiling. At last the encounter. Such beauty. A siren's voice. I knew her, but how? The order taken, the money exchanged, all that was left was the name. I summoned my courage, quieted my nerves, and offered my name, David. She repeated it gently, looked up at me softly, and sang hers back. Jewel. Shyly smiling, she turned and walked away. A little dramatic, but that was my encounter with Jewel today at Starbuck's. I wanted to talk to her, but the line was huge and my manager was right next to me. I swear she smiled at me, whether out of courtesy or more I don't know. Hopefully she'll return at a quieter time. I realized later I should've gotten her autograph for you. I really was entranced at first, and it was before I realized who she was. What a beauty!
