If you pause it right before Jewel says, "Whatever is around..." you'll see it. Lee ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 21:00:15 EDT From: GolfPnkGir@aol.com Subject: Drugs... I agree with everyone that's saying 'Who cares?' Many of you smoke or have smoked, some of you have *gasp* smoked pot (or "didn't inhale" hehe), and I'm sure MOST of you (at least the legal EDAs) drink occasionally. So what is the big hang-up? And Jewel has, at least from what I've seen, often used makeup (her artist is Kevyn Aucouin, I believe.) I say regard Jewel as another human being, not some supernatural pure and good goddess. ~Emily, the Sunrise Angel~ *I'd rather see the world from another angle* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 21:35:08 EDT From: TJtalken@aol.com Subject: conversation on the list i can just feel this starting a discussion about free speech that will need to be squeltched after five hundred post go on and on about it. BUT a lot of the other list that i'm on tend to frown on conversation about the musicians personal life..yadda yadda about how her life directly relates to the music (hypothesize about her personal habits amongst your immediate friends if you wish)..if thousands of other adoring musical fans think it's unrelated why do we on the jewel list think it's our right to rip her apart to discuss her make-up (as if she's the one putting it on when she goes to an interview?) to talk about her drug (or not) enduced states and in general put her on a pedestal (or not). I skimmed the past few digest and i got the general gist, i think that if we as a collective group tend to not analize each thing she does we might all be better people. While i'm at it, why do we feel it's necessary to vocalize that we agree or disagree to the entire thousands on this list, can't we just privately respond to items presented rather than everyone talking about the same oprah show for the next two weeks? (follow what i say not by my example) how about those persons that saw it respond privately to the ONE person who mentioned it? (that americans want to vocalize their beliefs to everyone syndrome i guess?) ok, enough jewel list bashing :-) duff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 18:54:48 PDT From: "minoru tanaka" Subject: drugs hi this is my first post but this talk about drugs and drinking think about this. When ever you're having a little session the joint passes pretty smoothly but when it doesn't what do you think of that guy or girl who refuses and throws everybody in the circle out of whack. In Vancouver here weed's fine and socially accepted and there is plenty of scientific evidence that says weed is not as bad as the public believes and about it ruining peoples production I give you two names, Bill Gates and Paul Allen children of the 60's who have a combined wealth of 45 billion plus. Any ways if Jewel smoke pot and I think there is a quote from a web page or magazine( I don't remember which one) when Jewel was asked how she wrote YWMFM it was something like alot pot. If you don't like drugs though, people make mistakes but nobody's ever died with a joint in their mouth. Just because Jewel drinks or smokes up doesn't change the person she is. Well I hope I haven't offended anyone or presented a bad image of western Canadians. Thanks for listening. Bye. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 21:52:04 EDT From: MCAinDE@aol.com Subject: Re: jewel's vices I haven't watched the Oprah show since it aired, but at the time, I was under the impression that the "vice" Oprah was alluding to was writing. As for thr drug topic, I agree that I have no right to know what Jewel chooses to use on her own time. I do, however, think that it would add depth to my image of her. Not in a positive or negative way. I, too, have been around many a user, and I find the number and types of people who use says a lot about our society and the hypocracy (sp?) we all live with. If Jewel wants to present a clean, anti-drug image, I think it would have even more effect if she was speaking from experience. I know nothing about the topic, though, so she may never have used anything and if so, good for her. I agree that there's room for comment from all sides on this list. For one thing, it has certainly made people come out and post. (This is a prime example.) But I must say that the idolatry disturbs me. There was a time when I, too, idolized celebrities, and would have given anything to meet them. I don't understand this phenomenon, and I wish I had learned sooner that Famousness is not next to Godliness. I honestly didn't see that much to get enraged about in the show. It was pretty typical Oprah, though I would have liked it to last a bit longer. Oprah usually tries to send a positive message, and I think she succeeded. Sharing the reading aloud was in my opinion a good choice. It shows the universality of the written words. And if you want to sell a book - Oprah's the show to do! I used to work at Barnes & Noble and it was amazing the way her book club titles flew off the shelves! I am glad everyone has opinions on this, and by no means am I saying mine are "right." I just wanted to add another layer. I don't think that we should be complaining about Jewel's makeup. jewel is made out of much more than a face with make up on it. And just because she puts on extra make up, doesn't mean she will kill someone, or molest kids. Jewel doesn't do ANY of that anyways. You guys are misunderstanding my post. I think it's simply amazing how many of you people will like someone just because of their involvement with Jewel (aka Fastball, Elizabeth Hummel, Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill) I love them all, because I grew up in SD but you guys just like them because they are friends with Jewel and so on. Am I right? What the hell and buying a cd just because it has a 30 second clip of Jewel on it. >> I want to just comment on this part of Lora's letter (really really great, btw) This I've noticed is true.. a lot of people I see on here get into all these artists just because they have some kinda involvement with Jewel.. I mean it's fine if you like them all and I know a lot of people genuinely do, but I was speaking to an EDA (I won't name names though) that said "Sure I like them all but I just like the fact that they're all friends with Jewel and if I get to meet them and stuff it's one step closer to Jewel, right?" The age own't be disclosed either but I'm sure you can guess... And of course, the occurence of ingenuine fans is probably more rare than can be noted.. but the fact taht there still are some people like that kinda unevens things. Take care all, - -Linda the Lovable "Angel" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 11:47:18 -0400 From: "Matt Adler" Subject: Jewel "Changing" I would just like to say one small little thing about Jewel changing. I don't know if she has, I don't know if she hasn't. She could be different in interviews because of publicists or what people might have told to her to do and how to act. Another reason she could have changed was from age. Don't forget, she has gotten older and has added totally new experiences under her belt. She has grown. Can you say that in five years, you do not change? Think about it for a second, if you could meet yourself, from five years ago, would you not see a different person then you are today? Plus, does it really matter if she has changed? No matter how she has changed, it should effect any of us at all, she still is writing music and performing, she still is writing poetry, she still is doing everything that she used to do, and more. So as I look over this letter, and conclude, I say, let's not shun change, let's welcome it, with open arms, because change is good, and opens up new doors and new experiences for us all. //\//\att //\dler The "Thespian Angel" http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/1030 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 00:10:23 EDT From: CybrPsco15@aol.com Subject: Poll results A little while ago I had poll on why you people like Jewel, and I got the results, here where the options 1. Makeup. Truly, the root of all evil! Makeup is why those kids walk into schools with guns and shoot their classmates! Makeup is why countries go to war! Makeup is why there is famine across the globe! Um....no. Being a woman myself, I'd like to take this moment to say that I most definately, absolutely wear make-up whenever I have any sort of special event (getting a formal picture taken, going on a job interview, giving a speech). Also, sometimes I just feel like glamming-out. However, if asked whether or not I considered myself a make-up kind of gal, I'd say no. 90% of the time, I don't wear the stuff. Does the fact that I wear makeup on said occassions make me any less wholesome? Does it make me wicked? No. Of course not. Now, we only see Jewel during 'special events'. We don't see her hanging around her house, chilling out, whatever. For the most part, we are not privy to her life whatsoever. And here we are, making judgements on a woman we DO NOT know and are given only a sliver of a glimpse at her life. So what if she wears makeup? I thought everyone here was steadfast in the fact that they like her for her voice, not her looks. And, as long as she doesn't start sacraficing babies to an UnHoly God, then I'll enjoy her music no matter how much she changes. And, after offering my own pointless voice to this discussion...I wonder why it is that, after every public appearance by Jewel, we feel the need to dredge up the ol' Heavy Make-Up rant session? Isn't it enough that we've all said the same things about .. oh ... a bazillion times already? I would understand if we all were offering new issues to the debate but, unless I'm missing something, it's the same-old, same-old.
