Thank God someone had the balls to be honest about the whole thing. I was a friend of Jewel's (as you know) prior to her being famous...and yes, she did indeed drink, and smoke pot then! I get really tired of the misconceptions of her purity. Yes, she is a delightful person...but you people really need to realize that (and Jewel would back me up on this) that you are no less of a human than she. You are just a pure, have the same amount of flaws...she simply was given a talent of expression. So, sorry to burst anyone's bubbles...but Jewel does drink, Jewel cusses, Jewel smokes (or has) smoked pot...and get this...she even has sex! She is a human, just like everyone else. If one of us did any of those things, no one would really care, so why should we care if she does? It is her life and she should be able to do whatever she wants with it. I still think her music and writing is great and that is why I am a fan, not because of what she wears or drinks. Stop zooming in on her every move and concentrate on what a talented person she is. Thanxs- Melissa Angel of Song ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 13:59:42 -0400 From: "Luis A. Rivera" Subject: Jewel's Neruda influence Hey all, just one question: I heard, actually read, on the Quick Biography section of the "Welcome Message" that the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda is quoted as being one of Jewel's influences. So I was wondering if anyone knows if she actually understands or speaks Spanish. Being a native Puertorican and spanish speaker myself, and a Neruda admirer this proved to be really interesting. Then again she probably read the translations but, oh well. All e-mails at l_angel@prtc.net. Well, sadly, I will have to be gone for 2 weeks in Korea, away from San Diego, but I have to go. So now, please if anyone has to e-mail me, I set up a special addy for EDA's, it's the one I'm writing from right now. But since this is my last post for a while, I have to say...EVERYONE PARTICIPATE IN SARAH ELIZABETH'S ANGEL BOOK!!! It was so easy I did two! So why not? Every EDA should do it. Okay? good. We're helping out and having fun, isn't that what it's all about? Ok, I know people missed the FANatic episode, and I totally wish I had some concrete info about it's re-air, but this is the best I can do. It will most likely air Friday July 24, at 2 pm pacific, or monday at the same time, or if it runs on the weekend, it will be probably around 11 AM to noon, around that time. I hope that helped at least a little :) Well, TTFN!!! == *~**Jenny**~* SuGaR HiGh AnGeL E-mail me at Jkpisces@aol.com http://www.gurlpages.com/celebs/jennybenny/index/html "Somehow Our Standard of Living Got Stuck on Survive." -- Jewel Kilcher I'm the ham, what can I say? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 11:16:02 -0700 From: "Wizard" Subject: Expectations The worst thing you can do to a person is to not live up to their expectations. We're all getting riled up over Jewel's makeup (I personally don't understand why women cover up their natural beauty with some paint made in a lab), what substances she puts in her body (She gets high? Great, drugs fueled "Sgt Pepper's", "The Doors", and "Electric Ladyland"; she's straight? Fantastic. Sobriety and abstinence contributed to the brilliance of Frank Zappa.) She's too happy; she's not consumed with angst; she's a theist; she's agnostic; etc., etc., et al. ad nauseam. We (and I'm including myself) have created her in our own image; or the image which we wish to see. But she's still human. When she's sick she pukes in the toilet like the rest of us. I know its not a pretty picture, but we must accept it nevertheless. What she does is her bag, she makes the decisions she feels are right for her, just like the rest of us do. Have we placed her on a pedestal so high, that in our eyes she is out of reach of her own humanity? It is unimportant how much makeup she wears, if she's happy, what kind of toothpaste she uses or what color her underwear is. What matters to me is that she remain true to herself, in whatever fashion SHE deems appropriate. This is what appeals to me most about Jewel. I don't like everything she does, one can't realistically expect to. I will accept her for who she is regardless whether or not she fits the model that I have created for her. Singer-songwriter Jewel has selected the winners of a poetry contest held in conjunction with the release of her first book of poems, A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR, a New York Times best seller. The Grand Prize Winner is Joe Householder of Houston, Texas, a 33-year-old whose winning entry is entitled, "August Evenings--Age 14." He will receive $500, which Jewel will match with a donation to a charity of the winner's choice. He also receives an autographed copy of the book and a non-signed CD version of the book. Householder reports on politics and public policy for KTRH Newsradio in Houston, and says that while he has written poetry for his own pleasure since the age of 10, he has never attempted to publish it. He finds much of Jewel's writing to be "compelling, with a rich and emotional feel to it." He says that winning the grand prize is "a rather amazing surprise." Ten runners-up come from all over the United States and range in age from 12 to 41. Each will receive an autographed copy of the book and a non-signed CD version of the book. The runner-up poems include: "Reluctantly Released" by Crystal Irene Hunter, Kalamazoo, MI, age 26 "The Golden Mean" by Elmar Mamedov, Rockville, MD, age 25 "The Whispering Voice" by Rachel Katherine Musser, Oneonta, NY, age 12 "Patriotism" by Todd Reynolds, Cheyenne, WY, age 23 "The Ring" by Madelaine Sauk, Philadelphia, PA, age 23 "God Poem" by Rick Schober, Maynard, MA, age 41 "His Parents Ask About My Pedigree" by Christina Springer, Pittsburgh, PA, age 34 "Nineteen Eighty-Six" by Thomas Swiss, Iowa City, IA, age 40 "Letter Writing #1" by Lizzie Wann, San Diego, CA, age 26 "Black Water" by User235688@aol.com The full texts of the winning poems can be found on the TVGEN web site at: http://www.tvgen.com/jewel During the four weeks of the contest, 5,270 entries flooded into the TVGEN web site. Jewel selected the winning poems herself after initial screening by a panel of judges headed by Bob Holman, well-known in the New York City poetry community. Jewel's book of poems, A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR, was released by HarperCollins Publishers on May 19, 1998, and is a national best seller. The 24-year-old multi-platinum-selling musician, who spent part of her childhood in Homer, Alaska, has been reading and writing poetry since a very early age. There is just a little bit...... This is what he wrote me: >Hey Mike. It looks like this is a new version of the same >concert. It's just been edited differently. Hope you can tune in. I'm not at all sure what it all means, and neither does MrBB (who I called), but I hope it's not just that all they "edited" was changing the incorrect song titles from the original/first "Jewel: Hard Rock Live" :-) Some speculation is that since the original show was an hour and three minutes, with maybe forty-two minutes of actual Jewel (the original had TONS of commercials) , they MAY have added a track/new song or two from the taping, as they taped a heck of a lot more than 1:03 back in February 1997 when it was done. Again, this will be on at Midnight Eastern Time on Saturday night on VH1, check your local listings for your area :-) Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 17:53:31 EDT From: ICURMINE@aol.com Subject: Re: Misunderstanding-Jewel (DRUGS) ya know Ben... I just wanted to say that I totally agree with you! I have BTDT. The thing about it is... even IF Jewel does choose to use, its not like she openly smokes weed on stage, or tries to get others to do it... THEN, MAYBE it would be anyone elses business. But she doesnt, either because she doesnt use, or the public doesnt know. So if she doesnt use, then who cares... AND if she does and the public does not know, then who are we to dig it up? Talk like this just reminds me of paparazzi... who cares who she dates, or what she does in her off time??? She may be a celebrity, and a role model but even they deserve time to themselves. Like this for example: >when i first joined i loved it but now it is just the National Inquirer and is getting >a little out of hand. >I am 100% for freedom of speech and opinions I agree with Scott big time. I do agree with freedom of speech and your own opinions, but I could probably pick-up the Inquirer and read the same stuff that I am reading now about Jewel wearing too much make-up, or even wearing make-up at all. I think that this is stuff that I hear in school, and it dosen't sound like adults are writing it at all. We sound like a bunch of children that are "placing Jewel in a category" by the way she looks, the way she dresses, and how much make-up she wears. Now that's pretty stupid. Would you like to be catagorized as a "whore" because you wear alot of make-up? Here is an example: A girl wears a short skirt, a baby doll tee, some make-up, it is about 11:30 p.m., and she is in a "ghetto" (as I may put it) neighborhood, and the little girl gets raped. Alot of people would say "Oh, she deserved it. Look at the way she was/is dressing, and look at all the make-up she was wearing, and look at what time she was, and look at WHERE she was." Now, look at it this way: The same little girl, and the same incident, EXCEPT the girl was wearing clothes that covered her body, and it was broad day light. Let's say around 11:30 a.m. Well, the same person who was saying that she deserved it is now saying that it "wasn't her fault.' And that "she dressed properly." To me, that is just stereo-typing people by the way she happend to dress that particular day. To get to the point and "moral" of the story: The Point: People stereo-typed here because of what she was wearing, where she was, and what time of night it was, and vice-versa for the other example. The Moral: The moral of the story is that we are human, and that little girl was a human. Also, humans make mistakes, and the little girl made a mistake that day going to that part of the neighborhood. Just let me say this: NO ONE deserves to get raped no matter how they dress. This is exactly what we are doing to Jewel. We may not be "raping" her physically, but we are "raping" her of her freedom to be a human and make mistakes. We are trying to make her perfect. Also, where May says: >and is diasppointed that >she's not releasing her OLD album which she recorded over a year ago (I >think). For one you are not her mother or manager, and she is well over the age of 18. I think Jewel can make her own desicions. Just because she dosen't do something the way you want it or how you want it done, it dosen't mean that you have to harp on her because it dosen't happen. Well, I just thought that I would put in alot of my $.02. Sorry the post is so long. ~Skye The Futbol (Soccer) Playing Angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #405 ***************************
