I would like everyone that I emailed about this gathering to please email me back. The concert is less than 2 weeks away and I would like to get a final run down of who all is going so that I can send out the details for whats going on. So anyone that I emailed about this, I would really like to hear back from you soon so that we can start working out rides, directions, ticket info, and where to meet at. Thanks. There is one problem though.......I missed the very beginning where Jewel performed. Other than that I do have the whole interview (which only took about 15 minutes of the show). If anyone is still interested please e-mail me and we can work something out. Also if you would like a written transcript of the show go to the AOL Oprah site (Keyword: Oprah) and go to: show info. There you can scroll down until you find where it states: Transcripts. ALSO, David Letterman has put out a cd called "Live on Letterman" (the cd has a yellow cover). Jewel happens to be on there and she also happens to be singing with Flea from RHCP. I hope that this helps. Or someone close with the lead singer of the Rugburns doesn't drink?!? HAH! Now that's a funny one, anyone who knows Java Joe's knows if you come out of the back room with a coffee cup there's something special brewing in there! I've also seen Jewel drink. Whatever u guys want to believe, but let me just tell ya making Jewel out to be this untouched, pure thing, is just making you guys look dumb. Plus, who gives a crap if she wears makeup? A lot of people do, hell have you seen how many magazine adds and commercials there are for the stuff? Well anyways, I'll go now, bi bi. Ok to whoever wrote to stop complaining about Jewel, This is a mailing list. That means everyone gets to give their opinions, with the exception of crude material. About Jewel wearing too much makeup, etc., etc., etc. I think what we forget here is that they are from two walks of life. Jewel is spiritual, intelligent, young, and has tried to help other people through her singing and writing. Oprah however does interviews for a living, to bring information to her audience. Do you really think Oprah owns Jewels CD? Been to a concert? Read her book for pleasure reading? No. My opinion is that Oprah is just doing her job of interviewing. But that's okay....we all come from different places. And about Jewel's makeup..... Remember the music awards (MTV's music awards) last year? That is heavy makeup! Jewel's on Oprah I agree I even went ''Yuk!'', because we are used to knowing Jewel as someone that is natural.....But hey isn't the inside that counts anyway? Jenn- the downtoearth angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 20:56:44 EDT From: RussRive@aol.com Subject: The Rebel is back(also includes a reply to Mr. Hooks) It's been a looooooooooooooooooooong time since I've made my presence known to anyone here, but reading Sean's comments always makes me need to say something. His remarks are always inflammatory. However, I don't mean that they anger me or are made to provoke anger. Sean's views about Jewel are, to say the least different, often brilliant, and always provoke a great amount of discussion on the list. This doesn't make them right all the time. I didn't see the show. However, I do have to agree with Alan in his reply to many of Sean's criticisms. One that stuck out to me is the makeup bit. Who cares if she wears makeup? Who says it was her decision? When I was a stage performer, they made me wear lipstick. It made me feel quite uneasy about the anti-gay comments I might get (I received none, and I was 12) and didn't want to wear the stuff, I did. I had to. It looked better on stage. No glare in the lights, and if you think there are lights on stage, what do you think TV is like? Who's face on TV isn't matted down with makeup? Jerry Springer is. How else do you think they make such an ugly man look presentable on TV? Oh yeah, it's the fights and the anti-feminist bimbos wrestling with each other. That brings me to the anti-feminist part. Makeup is anti-feminist? Whoa! Makeup often helps women look neat, presentable, and powerful in today's working world. It is commonplace and acceptable for a woman to fix her makeup before attending a meeting so as to look "together" just as a male might adjust his tie and jacket. So where is the anti-feminist part? It's not even non-feminist, to use Alan's word. It's been a custom that has been present for years and is in no way sexist. In many ways, it helps propel women as it helps them present themselves in a professional manner. I'd also like to address the changes that Sean finds in Jewel. Sean, you may not like the changes. However, you must admit that people grow and change, particularly at the age that Jewel and you and I are at. I'm sure your personality changed when you were a freshman in college. As young adults just getting out on our own, we discover new and different things about ourselves and the world around us. Jewel has done that. That's why she seems unrecognizable. For the list members who are newer, about a year and a half ago, at the beginning of the Tiny Lights tour, Sean posted about fearing changes that Jewel might go through due to her popularity as far as her accessibility and closeness with the fans that existed in the Jewelstock days. He's admitted that those changes have occurred, but also her success may have brought along some personality changes as well, as exhibited by her new ventures. I'm sure we'll all be let in more on Jewel's personality and the changes that occurred in the new album. She's happy, she's successful, she reflects it in her demeanor. If the movie and the album flop perhaps we'll see portions of the "old" Jewel as time goes on, but she will never be the same old Jewel again. We have to admit that and grow and change along with her in our own way. Thank you all for reading. During one concert (New Year's Eve, Las Vegas) I had a seat a little bit to the side of the stage in the second row so I could see clearly what Jewel was doing. Right after midnight a guy from the front row repeatedly offerred Jewel a glass of champagne. After awhile she took it from him and emptied the contents of the cup into her mouth but half a second later she turned her back to the audience and spit the champagne back into the cup and put the cup on the ground. hehehe...I know..useless info..but I thought somebody might be interested. To be happy is to be stagnant and content." - ----to be happy is to be evolving through your existence at a rate which agrees with your creativity. jewel has mentioned several times lately that she is living her dream. "living"... not simply "lived" when she made her first million and boom. she is creating just as much as she was in the days of interchange and phyllis barnabee, only she has more "power" in the material world now to sculpt. - ----it is nice to see her appear content because, as we all know, those times of quietude never last long with her. Sean Hooks wrote: " Jewel is not in a position to "express herself in any direction she feels she needs to" because her freedom is constricted by her overpopularity" - ----i have noticed she does seem to be overwhelmed by her popularity, but as with all things, massive change brings new packages and closes old doors. i think it is more appropriate to say we, as fans, are more restricted by her popularity. of course she seems further away on a tall stage with her book in one hand and a wall of 8 million cases of POY around her. that's why they call them stars. but it doesn't mean her mind isn't full of new ideas, and just because half of america knows her face doesn't take the angst away. her embittered tongue will no doubt raise it's voice again. - ----and to the side, MAKEUP. remember that jewel was on a stage in front of a large studio audience. for those of you who have ever danced or acted, to make your features recognizable from fifteen or more feet away, you need to accentuate lips and especially the eyes. so much of what jewel says is through the expression on her face. imagine the difference a bit of color made to the people in the 24th row.
