I think we all discussed this once before None of us COMPLAIN about Jewel.. to complain would mean to hold some sort of contempt about something. You obviously don't like it if you're going to complain about it. We all _like_ Jewel.. some prolly love her but that's their own take on whatever. I think her fans have the right to discuss some things they might not like 100% about her, but they're just little imperfections. Nobody's perfect. We aren't exactly angels ourselves either, as hypocritic as that might sound. We're here because we're fans of Jewel's of course, and we occasionally like to express our opinions on certain things Jewel does. Most of the time it's because we have personal feelings about it and it's a personal topic. I highly doubt that anyone here would stop being a fan if say, Jewel started to smoke or drink or whatever. Not to mention I really don't recall anyone "complaining" about the way Jewel dresses or the way Jewel does her make up... or even calling her snobby! First of all Jewel doesn't even wear makeup.. maybe chap stick or whatever but I know since I met her she said she really doesn't like wearing it and she only gets made up for videos and public events.. that stuff in the magazine "how to get jewel's rosy look" or whatever is all a bunch of fillers. Anyway I keep digressing, I apologize. I just want to say that even if we did complain about Jewel, nobody else should get mad. It's a person's duty as a human being to complain about things and point out what they think is right. If you don't like it, ignore it. Don't defend Jewel, I'm sure she'd probably listen if someone said "To be honest with you, I don't like the way you wear your hair." I honestly think she'd ask first which way the person would prefer. She wouldn't get hostile.. she'd probably play along But anyway.. I don't think anyone should get yelled at if they "complained" about Jewel. It's perfectly normal to have opinions on people and the way they are - it's just the way life goes. Sorry for the rant and rave, I just watched Good Will Hunting and I feel like being a Will figure for a moment :) take care all - -Linda the Lovable "Angel" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 22:54:36 +1200 From: Kim Lees Subject: Jewel??? Drugs??? just wondering about the drugs thing... I'm relatively new to the list so chances are it's been discussed before, but as I have always been extremely anti-drugs (had a friend OD a few years back) I was wondering what that comment was all about... oh, and about the nodding thing... I did a Journalism course at school and one of the main things we were told about interviewing people is to nod and look as if you are actually interested in what the other person is saying (even if they're boring you to death...) so I bet Jewel was taught similar techniques when she started to get famous... :-) Kim Lees Your New Zealand Angel Standing By aka The Angel Who Finally Got Himself A Homepage... http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stadium/7485/ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ **** ICQ# 9270797 - please feel free to add me to your list... **** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 05:44:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Livia Giovetti Subject: Stop harpin' on Jewel, plus Charity and Jeweltide carols OK, this is going to be one of my slightly longer posts, but I have to get all of this across. (Hey, I feel like a parent yelling at her kid doing this, so it isn't any easier on me :)). You are Jewel's ultimate fan club! I can't believe how many peopla are harpin' on Jewel because she changed her look! I wouldn't care if she was bald and her teeth were green, because she would still have the same personality. Beneath all the layers of makeup is the same loving musician who laughs when she's nervous, and cares about people. She has every right to alter her looks. I think Oprah, though, shouldn't have had Jewel on, not as an insult to Jewel, but soo many people found controversy with it, and Oprah used Jewel to her benifet, and to push her beleifs. I was disgusted with Oprah after the show. * * * As many of you know, LastDance0 is making a book of angels fer a children's hospital. Only 16 people (myself included) are making pages so far. COME ON, EDA'S!!!!!!!!!!! We can do better than that. If on Jewel's birthday we can be soo nice, we have to try today, too! If you can't or don't want to, pretend it's her birthday and do it. It means so much to Sarah Elizabeth, and those kids are going to just light up like a tree on Christmas if we do this. It doesn't have to be a work of art that will be put in the louvre, just a picture of an angel. Please help her, because aside from being Jewel's supporters, we are supposed to make the world a little more pleasant. :) * * * And on one final note, if anyone has Jeweltide Carols and is willing to make a copy for me, I'd greatly appreciate it and send $$ fer the shipping and a tape. Hi all, As always, we can count on Sean to provoke some intelligent discussion. I enjoyed his post, but also as always, I found some statements I disagree with. They are: In a message dated 7/22/98 7:00:35 PM, Sean wrote: <<...disturbing trends that I have noted in the past though are Jewel's new obsession with heavy make-up.>> By claiming Jewel has an "obsession" with heavy makeup based on the fact that she wears it on major network TV appearances, only shows an extremely limited frame of reference. From what I've seen over the past few years, thats the only time she wears it. Thats far from being an "obsession" on Jewel's part. If anything, it shows the viewers own obsession with what you wish her to look like on TV. A harmless thing, yes, but by calling it "Jewel's obsession", you are reading far more into it than is really there, in my opinion. To elaborate on that, a prime example is that Sean also said: <> Here you are saying an anti-feminist statement was made. I totally disagree with that. First of all, I think the word "anti-feminist" is totally inappropriate. "Non-feminist" may be more accurate. Jewel has said many times that she is not a feminist, but a humanist & not into any category that seperates people. Non-feminism & anti-feminism are two extremely different things. In closing, I'll say something that I told Sean privately awhile ago that is also appropriate here. When Jewel does these major TV appearances, its never going to be geared toward the incredibly knowledgable EDA population. It's going to always be geared toward the vast majority of viewers that have very little or no knowledge about her. To expect otherwise is totally unrealistic. You'll likely find this very depressing, but its an unquestionable fact--Although Jewel does think the EDAs are special for many reasons, when she & her management think of her "fanbase", they do not think only of the miniscule fanbase that The EDAs comprise. A fan to Jewel is basically anyone who bought her recordings or book & enjoyed it or someone who saw her perform and enjoyed it. That simple. It has nothing to do with how knowledgable you are about her. With that in mind, her fanbase is well into the 10 to 12 MILLION people range, maybe more. We have more EDAs than ever now, but still thats at best 5000 EDAs between all who are here & gone. Simple math unquestionably shows that The EDAs are less than a miniscule ten thousandth of a percent of her fanbase. Perhaps depressing to you all, but nonetheless true. Regardless of that, Jewel does obviously consider The EDAs as special. My point though, is that for EDAs to expect her to cater to them on major network TV appearances is totally unrealistic. Expecting her to do so, is only setting yourself up for a letdown most of the time. That be my opinion, MrBB PS. By the way, Sean & I plan to get together sometime since we've never actually met. I very much look forward to it. Maybe we'll tape it & release it! Judd" Subject: The AngelFood Bank Hey, A couple of mails have made their way to my inbox from Mike concerned about The AngelFood Bank (AFB). I was always told 'if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is' and I still believe that. The AFB is the exception to that rule. Many eda's have offered to make tapes for the list in the past, but with so many members it can be overwhelming. So about 40 of us have gotten together to make tapes for you, and it has snowballed into a real project :-) So even though we might sound businesslike and professional, it's still just a bunch of eda's making tapes for you. There's no profit involved in getting the masters from MrBB and Dan, no profit involved in getting the copies of the masters out to the volunteers, and no profit involved in getting the tapes out to you. All that happens is you send postage and blank tapes to your volunteer, and they send the music back to you. It'll end up costing you about $10 for all three tapes depending on your preferences for mail and blank quality, but we don't see any of that. In fact, we lose money making Jcards, buying equipment, and burning electricity and gas to make these tapes for you. No volunteer will ever ask you to send money, and if they do just let me know and they won't be a volunteer any more :-) But I seriously doubt that'll happen as it takes a special person to volunteer all the effort and time it takes to make tapes. If you have any doubts, you're welcome to mail me at webmaster@angelfoodbank.org. Of course you're welcome not to send in any tapes, but I don't know of one person who hasn't gotten their tapes returned to them. Sometimes due to a family emergency or lost mail it takes longer than they expect, but I know a couple of times we've replaced tapes lost in the mail with ones we've purchased ourselves to avoid people thinking we've cheated them. Emily is a reworked Jessica circa early to mid 1995. I _think_, but am not sure, it was reworked specifically for the movie. Just an aside, I saw the movie recently and watched it mainly to pick out "Emily" in the soundtrack, but became to engrossed in the movie to actually hear it. Its quite a good movie, if a triffle intense.
