Not to insult the winner of the Jewel poetry contest or the first runner-up if they happen to be EDAs, but HarperCollins cheated! In the rules, they explicitly stated that the poem MUST be either 75 or 70 words in total (I can't remember which). Anybody else notice that the grand prize winner's poem was 130 words?! That's a little more than 75 words! And the first runner-up's poem was 77 words! As I said in a previous message to the list, I wrote the most wonderful poem I had ever written, but it was about double the word cap, so I substituted this unfelt, crappy poem that was STILL over the limit, and that I had to chop down even more! If I had known that Harper Collins was going to COMPLETELY disregard ALL rules, then I would have just submitted my original, double-the-word-limit poem. The grand prize winner sure did! I'm going to write a nasty letter to HarperCollins, demanding an explanation. I'll post a message to the list if I get a reply. - -Matt, The Philosopher Angel (Salinger99@aol.com) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Jul 1998 17:05:12 -0400 (EDT) From: John York Subject: fan club and everything else there is a lot of stuff being planned and argued about right now between edas - from bearsville (i don't know what this refers to exactly) and lazer tag (!?) to eda meetings around the u.s. - a news letter - a fan club - etc. i know everyone has an opinion on this but here's mine anyway. for everyone wanting to do something productive especially if it helps the popularity of the one we all love you should do it - and we should support you. i don't understand those of you trying to discourage these projects - have you been listening to anything she (the goddess [i'll explain in a little while why i call her by this name - please be patient]) has been saying? when she had nothing and no "practical" reason to believe her future would be better than her past she believed in herself - despite "people giving her advice designed to enlighten her" about what was "realistic" - and so on. on the flip side those of you who expect her to drop what she is doing and fly to your house to meet you or play lazer tag (!?) - get real. first of all, if she went to meet everyone who adores her she would never have time to write another song, to act, or to do a concert - much less to relax and have some fun time on her own. secondly, i have this theory - i consider it extremely important - - it is that love is pretty much the opposite of what most people think it is - love is not 'won't you please give me what i want/need?' - it's more like 'i will support you in any way i can at no cost to you.'* like a mother to her child. (which is another reason i don't understand discouraging the fan club or wanting to limit the number of fans or edas out there - this is not supportive) i have not intention of ever trying to meet the goddess or make her feel guilty for not visiting me - because my desire is to support and promote her and her well being - to ask for more is like saying all she has given her fans is not enough - that she owes us more - that we're not satisfied with her. if you can't be a little bit giving with her - how do you expect to be an eda with ordinary people who are far less pleasant and wonderful? *this should not be taken to heart by codependant and/or abused people - people in these kinds of relationships - i think are more in love with an idea than the other person - or they are afraid of being alone - these things are not love either. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Jul 1998 16:40:29 -0500 From: "gerdes" Subject: Midwest Gathering I just purchased my ticket for the gathering in Omaha and I will be emailing everyone who has contacted me about this either late tonight or tomarrow afternoon. How embarrassing. ******************************************************* Friday, 9th, 1:20 I hear the screech of tires and see a car zooming into the Mobil station. It's Sonja! I hop in the car, then I hear a car door slam, *headslap* I see mom walk over to car. "Blah, blah, blah" says mom. "ok thanks." says Sonja (hehehehe). We're off to Sonja and Jason's. I meet a couple friends of Sonja's, say hi. See Jason's studly roommate...Jimmy? Well he was a stud. I sit on the couch alone for about 15 min watching mousehunt. Then I get called into the masta bedroom. Woohoo! We talk, we bond. Then off to Stater Bros. market we go. I see Jason, and he sees a pile of magazines and some chapstick (which I left in Dani's car). He tells us he'll be home at 4:00. ****************************************************** Still Friday We wait, we go to Sonja's, we get a call from Jason who is wondering why we aren't there. We head back to Jason's and off we go....to Carl's Jr. er Great America! ****************************************************** Friday again. We drive up with the music blaring going speeds up to 95 mph. We sing the bangles to the beastie boys. It's a fun trip. We finally hit the toll bridge, we pay. Now we are headed to Jim's house (I know I skipped a lot so shoot me) We get to the part where we drive about 10 secs, little did Jim know we were going down his street going 60 mph. hehehe. We arrive, I see nancy, I see rory, I see many many people none who are from france, Jason. ******************************************************* Early Saturday We say bi bi to nancy and rora! Who will now go beg the gods for money. ******************************************************* Saturday I hear a *rap* *tap* *tapping* at my door and the faint cry of my name telling me to get up.....I wash my hair in the sink ( not because of Jewel) and forget about the time. An hour goes bye. Jason tells me to get the heck out. So I do, we go to Denny's and I waste $6.00...it would have been more to....but everyone held me back from the danm crane machine. I will get that dog thing. After waiting forever and a day we got our drinks......then eventually our food. I got teased because I could have bought two Denny's dogs for $1.99, it's just not the same though. ******************************************************* Saturday GAG We buy our stuff, wait for Rora, she arrives, ummm hello Rora. Heh. She is scared of me at first, as most people are. We adapt, we get told off by a black chick about jesus or something. I hide my face as Jason, Jim, and Sonja walk around with EDA shirts on. (no offense). Rora and I become two peas in a pod. We scare people, I let her in on the gossip of the SD scene. Yada Yada Yada. We get home after awhile, of trailing Jim and Leif, Leif is wearing her stars, it's cool we can see their cars from miles away. Thanks Leif! ******************************************************* Sunday (So I jumped ahead My back hurts, from the bed I slept in (thanks Dani :P) I'm tired, and hungry. I yell and scream with Rora. We go to the liquor store with Sonja ( no liquor at this EDA gathering very strange) We get stuff. We get gas. We head home and wait for our tacos. Yummy. I eat one, everyone else eats more. I introduce Rora to GP and Jeff Buckley's music, she loves it. She worships JB we are happy. Then comes the time we must leave. We're off in search of Mobils and food. We get home at 5:00am and sleep all day I get home at 9:00pm I saw armaggedeon AGAIN it was cool again. Sonja and I bonded. Rora and I bonded. Jim and I....talked. Leif and I....well sorta...Nancy and I...ummmmm well I freaked her out ok? Jason and I....we sang in the car and babbled on about life and books. Overall I give this two thumbs up and a big toe. Rock on. Ciao babydolls. There is a bunch of volunteers that are willing to accept requests for these tapes and distribute them to these people. The master or original recording of a particular tape is recorded for the volunteers which are "branches", then they record them for the people who want them called "leaves".
