Just that I'm me... :) > A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR Well, they got that right. > By Jewel Kilcher Wow! Two in a row! > HarperCollins, $22 Depends on what country your in, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt... > Why can't pop stars ever be satisfied with their piles of cash and > adulation? For some reason they insist on trying their hand at acting or > politics or writing, despite the almost invariably disastrous and > embarrassing results. This is true. Alot of artists, be they actors, singers, writers, whatever, do tend to set themselves up for a fall when they try to expand their horizons. From what I have seen and heard of Jewel, I don't believe this to be that case. > The latest member of this unfortunate club is > Jewel Kilcher, known to most of us simply as Jewel, cashing in on -- I > mean, expanding her horizons beyond -- her success in pop music with a > new book of poems, A Night Without Armor. Maybe she is cashing in on her fame. So what? Would she be able to publish her poetry without the fame she has achieved? Maybe, but more than likely not. But, again, they got the title right... > Is there any point even asking whether anyone, anywhere would consider > publishing the poetry of Jewel Kilcher if she weren't a > multimillion-selling pop star? Like I said, would she be able to otherwise? It's just as fair a question as what this article asks. > But the utter banality of this collection > also begs a secondary question: how did Jewel ever become a > multimillion-selling pop star? Uh, let's see... Talent? Nah... Couldn't be... It's not like she can sing, write songs, play music, act, write poetry... Oh... Ignore this paragraph... > The answer may lie in a Rolling Stone > cover that asks, "How did Jewel do it?" over a picture of the pop star > slipping off her jacket to reveal a tight bra top. Duh. Let's face it, sex sells. But did Jewel's popularity base come from her breasts? No. I loved Jewel long before I saw her in a video. I'd be lying if I said I didn't look. I AM male, after all. But a nice body and beautiful face is not the reason to like a person's music. If they can't sing, they can't sing. And looks are going to do nothing for their popularity except for the lowest common denominator in society. I've seen the picture. There's nothing wrong with it. But some people... > But let's put cynicism aside momentarily and look as objectively as > possible at the work. It's probably just me, but I saw nothing in this article that was objective. They have a specific view of Jewel and decided to tear her down. They have a right to their opinion. I have to give them that. But this is a little OVERLY harsh. > First, though, there's the cover to get by, > featuring two lavish photos of Jewel -- only one of which shows her with > her hand inside her shirt -- and a cute handwritten note explaining that > these poems didn't become songs because "some thoughts need to be sung > only against the silence." And the problem with this is???? > Then there's the book's preface, in which the > poet misspells Tom Waits' name Uh, hello. People make mistakes... > and spews stuff like "...[poetry] stirs > the Divine within us and whispers all the things there are no words > for." Let's see, if there are no words, what exactly could it be > whispering? Oh, forget it. I'd say this person is decidedly lacking in the soul department. Stop trying to review poetry and review slasher flicks. They're more in this mind set. How many times have you felt emotions you cannot describe, for there are no word to describe them adequately? Me, happens all the time. > There are more than 100 poems in A Night Without Armor (I read them all, > I swear), gathered like the airy, unedited thoughts of a sensitive > teenage girl who sees herself (as most teens do) at the center of the > cosmos. Poetry comes mainly from personal experience. I write poetry, and I know that my poetry comes from the things I experience in everyday life. As such, my poetry could be considered to show me as "the center of the cosmos". Is that the case? No. But to someone who has missed the point... > Jewel was raised by hippies in Alaska, and apart from the dreamy > girl-in-love stuff found in any high school yearbook, Nothing wrong with being mushy. Look at one of the all time classic love poems: "How Do I Love Thee?" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. How much mushier can you get?! This poem sends diabetics into shock! But is it a bad poem? No. It's one of my favourites. > the subject matter > of Jewel's oeuvre leans toward the glaciers, roadhouses, snowy canyons > and coal stoves that defined her picturesque childhood, e.g.: "I would > walk alone/ in the woods and let my mind wander/ freely, stumble across > theories on the origins of myself/ and all things." Now THAT'S imagery! > No doubt Jewel riding her pony across a sunlit Alaskan meadow is the > stuff of many an adolescent fantasy (or tampon commercial), Speaking of adolescent... > but it > doesn't exactly make for riveting reading, especially seeing as most of > this stuff is not really poetry at all, but prose fragments clumsily cut > up into lines. Poetry does not necessarily mean lines are divided into set lengths (ie haiku) or that the lines always rhyme. Consider these first five lines from Amy Clampitt's "Time": It may be we are in the last days, Seven hundred years ago to the week, on the eleventh of December, the kingdom of Wales went under. Today, the sixth of the twelfth month of the nineteen-hundred-eighty-second year, according to the current reckoning, there are roses the size of the old English threepenny bit- Tell me the measure of that poem. What style of rhyming is used? Not that simple. And neither, I would assume, is Jewel's poetry. > And they don't exactly trip off your tongue, either: "After the divorce > we moved to Homer/ to live in a one bedroom apartment/ behind Uncle > Otto's machine shop," one poem begins. What's wrong with that. I read it and the words flow. It's very natural. > Not surprisingly, Jewel's breasts, so prominent in her music marketing > campaign, also make repeat appearances in her poetry. They're prominent in her music marketing? I must be missing something... > In one piece a > father tries to connect with his son by ogling them; elsewhere they are > "two silver deities/ two shining steeples giving testament to the sky... > twin moons/ two pillows for your whiskered cheek...." Sheesh! What? And the Song of Solomon from the Bible is any worse? Besides, you show me a man who says he never looks at a woman's breasts and I'll show you a guy who is either a) a liar, b) gay, or c) has more control over his subconscious than is possible at this stage of our species' development. > Perhaps on record Jewel's lyrical incompetence is masked by her voice > and music. EXCUSE ME?! Lyrical incompetence?! What drugs is this person on? Granted, Jewel has a phenomenal voice (one of the best I've ever heard) and is backed by amazing music. But, seriously, people. I agree with that about as much as I agree with the person who said Lisa Loeb's song "Sandalwood" is made clumsy by lines like "Your hair falls softly like animals". Use your imagination to make the words into images and you'll see the beauty behind them. > More likely, though, it's just her looks. Yeah. Right. Sure. And the Apollo 11 landing was really filmed in Hollywood. > As her Rolling > Stone cover unwittingly implies, it's all about breasts. No wonder > teenage girls get depressed. I'm going to take two seconds to be as childish as this "review" (and I use the term loosely) seems to be to me: BITE ME! NOTE: The opinions expressed above are fully my own. If you agree with them, you are obviously one of the more intelligent, highly evolved beings on this planet and should be rewarded for your greatness... :) May the Fortunes smile upon you... FANatic, is it just for US residents or can anyone be in it? The reason I'm asking is because, when I thought about entering the Poetry Contest, a EDA told me that is just for US residents, so if anyone knows anything about this, Please e-mail me… Thanks, Veronika, the brown-eyed angel.. Really, we DON'T care about what he thinks deserves to be a tampon commercial. He obviously violently dislikes Jewel/Jewel's music, which slips into his writing (I think it's Jewel, herself, since he called her a "pop star".) He goes on more about how he hates her singing career than the actual book itself. Letting one's own opinions get in the way of an openminded review is a huge mistake. All I have to say is that even the greatest of painters, poets and musicians have been bashed about as hard as this. Look at Monet who use to be so criticized they said it looked like he painted with a broomstick! (In fact, the same was true for all impressionists during that period.) I guess we should take some comfort in the fact that she has gained such recognition and is able to incur some bad comments. As they say in show business..."there is no such thing as bad publicity." If people weren't interested in Jewel, no one would bother wasting the print to bash her. Oh, and one last comment...if Jewel's poetry was soooo bad...how could she be "cashing in on it" as the writer suggested? Just food for thought. I know Alan Bershaw has alerted us to Cindy Lee Berryhill's upcoming Living Room Tour performance on July 9 at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. Cindy Lee is appreciative of the support she has received from many of us on this list, and she is offering us (and her fans from her own and a few "select" other email music message lists) a special "command" performance. Her show is in a neat-o loft-like space just steps from the ocean in Venice Beach. She promises a few surprises, and I promise a delightful time. She has asked me to have y'all RSVP to me, for a head count and directions. You can send me an email with your info and location (please put "CLB-RSVP" in the "Subject Line"), or call me at 310/264-8301 during PDT business hours. It would be great to have a healthy and supportive turn-out, as this performance will be a showcase of sorts, as well, for some "industry types." (Please leave all flammable materials at home.) I hope to see many of you there. - -=-Larry-=- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 16:57:07 EDT From: DmBear978@aol.com Subject: Re:the Horrible Trash essay Hi folks, > I found it very disturbing. With such stupid comments like about her Rolling Stones cover issue and ...the funny thing is that the person didn't even get the number of poems in the book right! What an OAF!
