I'm talking of course about Haiku, which I personally think takes much greater skill to extract the true feeling of a poem of greater length and convey that same feeling in three short lines. No style is strictly confined but I've always enjoyed the ever simplistic three lined version. I was wondering if anybody who has any live Sarah McLachlan tapes wants to trade for some Angelfood. I don't have much, but maybe I have something you don't have. I am going away on vacation, but I'll be able to do this as soon as I return. I really need Sarah tapes! You're right, it's not very Jewel-esque, but it's great, she even raps! So, I HIGHLY recommend this CD (The Craft soundtrack) to anyone who doesn't have it. It also includes Heather Nova doing a cover of "I Have the Touch" (a Peter Gabriel song that you can find on the Phenomenon soundtrack also along with Jewel), Letters to Cleo, a GREAT song by Love Spit Love called "How Soon is Now?", and a great Beatles cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows" There's more but I can't remember. In fact, I don't really exactly find the structure of standard poems in this book. (12-10-12-10 7-5-7-5 ...) I also finished reading the book, and, I think that some of the poems would not being read by young people. But one is great, the one called, Crazy Cow, really reflecting her life, I think. I'm just wondering about the track "Under The Water" on the sound track of the film "The Craft". I haven't actually looked at a tracklisting on the CD case itself, but several record clubs and also a few Jewel discographies attribute this song to Jewel. Which is cool, because the record's already cool for having a Beatles song covered by OLP... so it's beginning to suggest itself to me as a record that I should at least tell my sister to buy... BUT... CDNOW has this convenient feature that lets you listen to clips from some of their CDs in RealAudio. I went there to check it out and see what this song was like... and... uh... that is SO not Jewel... But is it? I mean it SAYS it's Jewel... what's going on? >> It's a remix of a sort of originally folkey sounding song. There was a dance beat and synthesizers added to the song. It doesn't really sound like Jewel, but she has so many different styles of singing that it's hard to comprehend what is her "real" style. She owned a farm, a youth-hostel and a bed-and-breakfast, she also gave horse rides to tourists. In Homer, I met tons of kids who were just looking for places to pitch their tents for three or four dollars a night. And there were lots of college kids who came to Homer to work for the summer-we called them spit rats, because they lived in a tent city out on a spit of land. I'd ride my horse down there a lot and sort of meet people along the way. You know, when you're sixteen, hanging out with people in their twenties who had already been through college really opens up your mind. They'd turn me on to books to read; we'd talk about traveling. It really keeps you from being prejudiced at a very young age. Homer was filled with travelers. I'd meet people from all over. I had friends from Chile and Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Australia, and New Zealand. Those people turned me on to alot of different languages, religions and different way of thinking. Summer was always a good education. There you go folks. By the way to those of you who knew me as jkfan@yahoo.com this is now my new email address. I mean, anything can be put into poetry, no matter what you're saying. It doesn't matter how long a poem is, or what words and phrases you put in it, a good poem has that certain amount of compassion and feel to it because a writer poured their soul onto a peice of paper. Personally, I think that a good poem can't be forced to come. I can't do that and when I try to do that it turns out really crappy. All of you guys have to realize that poem is an art form that comes from the soul and only when it comes from the soul, will it be completely appreciated. A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR JEWEL Harper Collins/Harper Audio One star out of four (4 stars-Excellent, 3 stars-Worthy, 2 stars-Mixed, 1 star-Poor, Dog symbol-Dog) On this disc (a companion to her 109-poem book), Jewel reads her work like a sixth-grader reciting in front of the class for the first time: stilted. Each letter in every word is emphasized with such exact pronunciation that the delivery lacks any authenticity. The poems are not spoken, they are manufactured from her throat: carefully packaged, consumable, disposable. When in "Wild Horse" she monotones: I'd like to paint my poems with desert tongued clay across your back and ride you savagely as the sweet and southern wind through a green and wild Kentucky There is a dearth of passion and a lack of vocal modulation that is offensive to the listener. To be fair, after 40 poems, Jewel begins a slow roll, and by the 75th poem she actually emotes, but it's too late. Jim Morrison she's not. In the preface to her book, Jewel writes "I've learned that not all poetry lends itself to music...." What she needs to learn is that not all poetry lends itself to publication. - ---NOELLE B. Tracks 10-12 I can vividly remember as deplorable at best, though there were plenty of other times where I was fairly impressed, usually towards the middle and the end of the CD. The review is a fair one, *maybe* a little harsh, but I think particularly observant in reference to how the poems were read. I thought in general that along with the quality of the poetry improving toward the end, so did her reading of the poems. Had I only listened to the first 20 or so poems, I probably would have tried to get a refund or something, but the end was, to be blunt, good, and I found myself just starting to want to listen more right as it finished. It's worth buying as a unique item in a collection to go along with its actual poetry, but the content on its own isn't convincing enough to go buy. - --Brian ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 20:14:40 -0400 From: "K. Angel Rozett" Subject: My -own- review Dear EDA's, After reading the review of ANWA that was just posted I thought that I might add my own. I personally strongly disagree with whom ever wrote that review. They seemed to be critisizing her voice and sounds, and not the actual poetry which is the heart and soul of her work. Noelle B. [the author of that review] says "In the preface to her book, Jewel writes 'I've learned that not all poetry lends itself to music....' What she needs to learn is that not all poetry lends itself to publication." in his closing. Gosh! How objective could you be?! In his review he did not say anything about the actual content, pentameter, or rythm of the poetry. All he critisized is how Jewel read it in the audio version. Noelle B. has no right to say that Jewels poetry should not have been published, when he has made no point about the work itself. It may have been more fair for him to say that maybe her poetry should have been left unheard, but read instead. Does that all make sense? Anyway, so as far as the actual content. I was duely impressed. I nearly cried after reading one or two of her pieces, and caught myself in moments of chuckling after many others. Not only did it show me a whole new side of Jewel, but it made me feel less alone as an amatuer poet. Jewel's style of poetry, different from her lyrical pieces, was written much like I write my own poetry. And the fact that she has done so much and had so much success with her stuff made me smile to the thought that maybe my work is not hopeless. So, inconclusion, in her book 'A Night Without Armor' I feel that Jewel describes her moments, of hope and spreads much more hope of many forms. She recieved an enthusiastic double-thumbs-up and a definite BRAVO from me. I can't wait to read more. Thank you for your time and interest!! ~~ Angel Rozett [Angel is my real name, ironically] angelrozett@poetic.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #335 ***************************
