Hi Everyone, Well, that being said, I think that there is a lot to be said for any music that you like, whether or not the critics like it. And it doesn't really matter if the critics like it, if the record companies like it, or even if her fans like it...the only thing that matters is if SHE likes it...and if SHE likes it and sends it out for everyone else to listen to, and THEY (or we) don't like it, so be it. There have been many things about some of Jewels less-popular songs that I didn't like...but she has a beautiful voice, and I consider it a wonderful treat just to be able to listen to her sing, almost irregardless of WHAT she is singing... Enough of my diatribe. David (the "To Each His Own Angel"-Angel) Personally speaking, I don't analyze her (or anyones) music THAT closely... I believe music is like art...I may not be able to define it, but I know it when I see it... I was at the NYC signing and while comparing books with another person we noticed that the signatures were completely different. It is very obvious that she did not sign all those books and for anyone who keeps asking for a signed copy, you are really wasting your time and efforts. It would have been impossible with Jewel's schedule to have signed the thousands of copies that went to all the Virgin stores. Anyway, if that was the case, where are the violins coming from? Did they really have violin players onstage while Jewel was recording live? Or was she not really recording live and the digital watch was one of the violin players, etc. Anyone got any ideas? >> It has to be live, because no sane producer would ever let someone where a digital watch during recording - I swear, sometimes they search ya' at the door :) There's always the possibility that a really awesome take would be ruined by someones loud shoe hitting the floor, or someone snapping gum, or something totally inane like that, so they're always (well, not always, but usually) are really sharp about that. There's always the possibility, of course, that they thought it was such a beautiful take that they didn't want to re-record (if it was indeed a studio produced track). The thing is, they could have done what's called a "punch-out", which is basically where the musician plays/sings along with an already recorded track with a mistake in it, continuing singing past the mistake part a few bars. The producer then "punches" out the mistake, and "plugs" in the other track. It can be difficult with timing and such, and if you get a shite producer who doesn't punch well, you'll hear a little "pfft" sound before and after (you'd have to be real bad to do that on a major label record, though...). But, Jewel might not like an "non-live" recorded tracks, where there's dubbing, and layering tracks, and stuff... If it was a live track (I just don't remember, and don't have the cd in front of me to listen.. :/ ) then they probably dubbed the strings over later, where the people playing just played along with Jewel's track (which would've been playing in their headphones), and they were recorded separately, then the tracks layed together. But again, if Jewel doesn't like that "non-live" track recording, she wouldn't of done that, either.. grrr, I wish I had the cd here to listen to it!!! hehe.... that was just a totally long winded answer to such a simple question. ;) Hope it helped in some way, shape, or form.... ? alana. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jun 1998 08:11:46 EDT From: PENNY16161@aol.com Subject: ANWA Hi guys. Francois Cartegnie wrote: > Could those Signed book being false ? Well, there's always a bit of wisdom among autograph collectors that says unless you saw it getting signed, you'll never really be sure. > Why not comparing all the signatures by scanning them ? That actually won't tell you all that much. Firstly, a lot of people's signatures will change rather noticeably over the course of signing many autographs, it's a simple matter of your hand getting tired, or getting sloppy, etc... Secondly, many stars have autograph machines that use real pens and such, so even the imprints will vary slightly, as in a real autograph. Really, it's almost counter-intuitive, if there's variation, when it's more possible that they're done by the same person, but if it's too consistent, then it might be fake. Except variations can also be due to different people signing FOR the person, or some people will intentionally take a break from signing when their writing starts to change... So, the bit about seeing the autograph in process still applies. If someone you trust says it's so, it's probably so, but reality dictates a certain uncertainty. On a side note, for those wondering, the "autograph plate" sticker with the autograph on it is pretty normal in mass autographs. There are many reasons to do it. It's cheaper to have the writer sign a bunch of cards and ship them around the country than to ship the books in to be signed and then around, it's cheap to throw out mistakes and ink spills and such, it's easier on the writer to be signing a pile of stickers than to have to go through the books one by one, etc. etc... > If it's right, I think me and some people will be !!really!! angry about > those stores. They might, but it's pretty typical of the business. The desire to have autographed and "limited" releases by so many people quickly gives way to many people demanding something unique, which, of course, means, it's nothing unique. When I noticed how many people were asking about getting the "limited" autographed ones, how many stores were going to be stocking them, etc.. I pretty much realized I wasn't going to be surprised one way or another. My book has a rather neat "Jewel" in gold pen, as do many, it seems. It's special to me because a very good friend gave it to me, and because it has the poetry of a very special artist. Whether or not the autograph is real, I really don't know, but I'm not going to dwell on it. I'm sorry for those who feel they may have been ripped off... I certainly don't like the dishonesty that may have come into play, but I did notice, we recieved little word from Jewel's people about those autographs...
