The recent discussion with respect to the new album caught my mind, and I had a few thoughts I felt like sharing. I first read Alan's news as indicating it would be a Christmas album, as many people did. Then came the complaints... Then came Mike noting that it wasn't a Christmas album... and of course, there are those who are happy with any given album release... Now that it's been hashed over, I wondered how much it would really matter. A thought for tonight is this: If the Bearsville songs had already been released in an album, and Jewel really were to do a *Christmas* album as a 3rd release, how would everyone feel? Would those who feel cheated by the idea of a Christmas album now still feel that way? Now, the point may be irrelevant, as it's not a Christmas album, it's a winter season album... dealing with, it seems, the symbolism of winter, of death (and rebirth), of renewing, resting, reflecting... of cleansing, of complexity hidden withing the seemingly pure and simple... How is that really so different than a non winter album for Jewel? I begin to suspect the biggest difference is that everyone is feeling cut off. This is the longest we've gone with so very little contact. Not only have those who have recurring, behind the scenes, contact been quiet, but not as many of the regular members have been seeing Jewel at shows and relating the experiences to us... It's easy to realize how much we no longer have, and so hard to notice those precious things we would have revelled in, in our innocence... Have we forgotten to maintain our innocence? Since I will be in the US in August, is there any chance that an EDA gathering will be planned around that time in the NY/NJ area (I will be either in NYC or Princeton)? I know you can't custom-make a gathering, but I really want to meet you people. BTW, does anyone know of any cool stuff going on at around that time and place? Sharon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jun 1998 01:00:12 -0700 From: Lara Subject: The EDA-Thoughts mailing list... what is it? Hey guys! Mike Connell asked me to re-mention the eda-thoughts mailing list as there have been many new subscribers since my last post. What is eda-thoughts? A little while back I suggested starting this list to complement the existing list (where you are now reading this post). This list provides a place for people who want to discuss things which are not posted on the main list. These things are not currently allowed on the jewel list as there are so many subscribers and not everyone wants / has time to read through all the additional posts. The eda-thoughts list, however, is very low volume with very few posts a day. The list is a lot smaller than the jewel list and focuses on poems, thoughts, etc. Anything a person wants to express is welcomed. The list is available in both loose-mail and digest form, whichever you prefer. To subscribe to digest, send the two line command subscribe end to eda-thoughts-digest-request@smoe.org. To subscribe to loose mail, send the SAME two line command to eda-thoughts-request@smoe.org. This list also has a homepage and if you do decide to join feel free to email me a poem of yours to put up on the list site. People really seem to be enjoying the list and we'd love to have you join :-) Lara <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Lara - ljruth on AOL instant messenger larajean@gmx.de, daisypetals@usa.net you know you wanna see my homepage... members.tripod.com/~laruth <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 23:27:42 -0400 From: lillie Subject: EDA POSTER/BEARSVILLE98? ICQ!!! basically what I've done is I've started a new ICQ number which is 13385547 and I'm asking all you EDA's on ICQ out there to PLEASE add that number to your list so I get as many EDA's as I can on my list, then I will send all of you my contact list so you can add everybody to your list too... please note: it might be advisable to start a new ICQ number, as I have, instead of using your normal one cos if this idea is as successful as I am hoping I should end up with a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG list of names (hopefully!!!), which should pretty much guarantee that at any time you should be able to chat with fellow EDA's... for those of you who have never used ICQ, it is a chat program that has heaps of other cool features that allow you to exchange files and stuff like that... it can be downloaded at http://www.mirabilis.com/ as well as being able to set up chatrooms or chat individually with fellow EDA's, we will also be able to trade files such as Real Audio, graphics & text files... oh, and in just in case you missed the number, it is... >>>>> 13385547 <<<<<< please add it to your ICQ list and help me turn this fantastic idea into a success... thanx!!! The original transcription was from the very first version of it that Jewel sang during the October 97 Europe Tour. It's developed & is a bit more refined, now. There's a very good chance this will be included on Jewel's new album. Here's the updated lyrics for your enjoyment. MrBB "Winter Song" by Jewel Kilcher (Originally written 10/97. This updated transcription is from the 2/98 version included in the RS documentary) Turn to me with frozen lips Your hands are icy cold Your eyes burn bright Against the frost lit sky You never seemed more lovely than you do tonight Pale on the horizon Like leaves frozen in the snow Two bodies merging seperately Time stands still If its pierced with cold Chorus: The Moonlight hears The Moonlight knows What's simple is true And I love you Theres a warmth in my heart It haunts me when you're gone Mend me to your side And never let go Time knows nothing We'll never grow cold The Moonlight hears The Moonlight knows What's simple is true And I love you The twilight descends On our sillouhettes How soon Spring comes How soon Spring forgets I wanna stop time Say "It'll never begin" Old Man Winter be our friend Old Man Winter be our friend The Moonlight hears The Moonlight knows What's simple is true What's simple is true And I love you ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 12:30:47 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB-Jewel's grandmother's poetry Hello again, Although this is not direct Jewel content, I know all the EDAs that enjoy poetry will be interested in this. I've finally had a chance to read "Voice Of An Initiate". This is a book of Ruth Mariott Kilcher's poetry that was originally published in 1988 & then reprinted in 1989. For those who don't know, Ruth is Jewel's grandmother & the person most directly responsible for the Kilcher Family's legacy of music, poetry & spirituality in general. She passed on last September, but this book is a wonderful way to get to know her better. I'm one who never really read much poetry (other than song lyrics) but I enjoyed Jewel's book, much like the majority of you, I'm sure. I think that anyone who enjoyed Jewel's book will most certainly enjoy Ruth's book. I'll include a sample following this post. If you're interested in this, a limited quantity of copies are still available from The Kilcher Alaska Webstore. For more info or to order, go to: http://www.kilcheralaskastore.com/ Here's one of the 57 poems included in "Voice of an Initiate". (This is one of two in the book that is printed from Ruth's handwritten transcript so I've typed it out in accordance to the way it was written on the page.) Enjoy! MrBB "Prologue 1988" by Ruth Mariott (Kilcher) Ah yes dear friend- so newly found and in the twilight of our years- before the sinking sun has set Imagination fires our souls So lightly and so freely does the spirit bestow its favors on the ones who- more than others- speak and understand it's language happy to communicate Like children once again we watch - -amazed and awed- the splendor of celestial fires delightful and surprising in brilliance of explosion showers of sparks descend upon us from the lively interaction of a thousand sparkling fountains and breathlessly caught up in jubilant glee and cosmic celebration our hands reach out for falling stars Until we recognize that we are the Center the very Heart of Matter and Creation While eons drip from our fingertips ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jun 1998 15:13:45 +0200 From: Cris Eichler Subject: Re: sucky albums Hi all, Raymond Wong wrote: > A thought for tonight is this: If the Bearsville songs had already been > released in an album, and Jewel really were to do a *Christmas* album as a 3rd > release, how would everyone feel? Would those who feel cheated by > the idea of a Christmas album now still feel that way? No, I don't think anybody would feel cheated. And the reason for some people to feel cheated now is not the fact that this new album is going to be a "winter-season" album but the loss of the Bearsville recordings. And to me there are two reasons why many EDA's are especially concerned about that: a) Because it is a bunch of incredible songs, which most definately shouldn't end up as b-sides or in the trashcan. b) Because these recordings are closely connected to what was probably the most magical event in this list's history: JEWELSTOCK. Hey, I wasn't even there and I've only got the tapes but the atmosphere on those tapes alone makes me feel much the same way as the EDA's who actually attended the event. So, to a lot of Angels "Fritz Creek Store" would have been much more than just Jewel's second album. It was supposed to be an album in which origin the EDA's were kind of involved in or felt they were, anyway. In my mind these are the reasons for the cool reception of the new album amongst some list members. As I already mentioned in an earlier post: I'm looking forward to this new album and I respect her decision as to what to release and what not. But that doesn't change the fact that the loss of FCS really, really, really HURTS ! Love, Cris ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #300 ***************************
