I thought I was sharing my feelings about the art of a human being, I didn't know I was presuming upon a deity! If I've hurt Our Lady, then may She smite me with extreme prejudice. If someone promises me something that will please me, then I'm going to be looking forward to it. And then, if they eventually don't deliver, I'm going to be disappointed. My eager smile of anticipation will droop and I'll say "awww" and maybe talk about how I feel. I don't worship or revere Jewel, I respect and admire Jewel, and love her art. Why can't I be unhappy if I miss out on some, for whatever reason? I'm unhappy! I waited and I got let down and it makes me sad! So I'm comiserating with the other let down people here, and I don't see what I'm doing wrong. > P.S. angel is a religious thing, and Christianity started of in the latin > language, so you "angeles" should be happy The Gospels were written in Greek and Aramaic. | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 May 1998 01:50:51 EDT From: Cressyda@aol.com Subject: Supporting Jewel through everything!!! I admit to being apprehensive about the next album, and of course very disappointed that we will not get to buy FCS -- I don't know why she can't release it and NOT tour, but it's her decision. The fact is I support Jewel. I do not follow her just for her music, I follow her for the person I perceive her to be. (yes, I know I don't know her personally, hence my use of the word "perceive). As a fan, I don't just want to hear Jewel's music, I also want her to be happy. So if she doesn't feel inspired by the music that still inspires us, that's no problem. I'm not going to whine complain about it. I want her to grow and explore and keep herself feeling challenged. I want her to be happy with what she creates and proud of it, so Latin arias and reverence for the holiday season sounds great and intriguing to me. I will support Jewel no matter what she does. Just like sticking by your favorite football or baseball team even when they haven't won a game in decades (not that I'm implying Jewel is a loser, just that she can't do anything to make me not support her and her artistic endeavors) I will be at the record store to buy it the day it is released. First of all, I just want to ask you all a question. Since when do we have the right to mandate what Jewel does with her life? If she wants to start playing polka music and start a nose-picking fetish club, then that's her prerogative. I personally find it very appealing to hear a different side of her in the upcoming Christmas season album. You guys are too picky. IT'S HER LIFE!!! Also, you guys should really check out this article if you didn't already: http://www.nypostonline.com/entertainment/2073.htm It says she was born in Alaska and raised in Michigan!! Neither of those things is right! But the rest of the article is very good. Well, that's all for now. Jewel is going to do what she's going to do regardless, but she she go ahead with her plans, release the holiday-ish album and the third album, and put FCS and other extras in a 4-CD box set with a revised edition of POY. I know sometimes Sean's posts can make people upset because they are different from the "norm" (no offense to anyone named Norman :o) ), but they are very thought provoking, and cause one to really think about the topic, even if, or should I say especially if you disagree with his view. I was the pre-game with a bunch of my fraternity brothers. I left the room to get a soda and when I came back I saw that the Jewel had already started singing the national anthem and the room was quiet. One poor guy asked who was on TV and had about five people snap at him, "You don't know who that is?" Anyway, I was wowed by her singing...it brought a tear to my eye. I thought she really found the meaning of the song, unlike some previous artists (like Whitney Houston) who IMHO tried to make "Star-Spangled Banner" sound like a top 40 hit. But I thought Jewel kept it simple and really enjoyed it. I got back to my apartment later in the evening and found my roommates were making fun of her for the lip-synch mistake. I hadn't seen that part, and when I heard about it I didn't care. I was sold on Jewel's singing power. I found this list about two days later and bought POY and a nice poster not long after that and it's all been great. I feel lucky; through angelfood I've been exposed to a lot of great songs by Jewel that millions of people with POY probably never will get to hear... mike rusche angel in training ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 May 1998 09:41:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Karen Boysen Subject: NY post article I read the New York Post Article and it talks about her poetry book so I"m assuming it's pretty recent right? Sure, it's very >disappointing not to have the old favorites coming out after all and being >replaced by a holiday album that sounds more trendy than Jewel Style would >have been thought to be. I just have to toss in my two cents here. I really don't think it's anybody's duty to feel "pleased and grateful" for whatever Jewel decides to record and put out... I love POY, and I love most of the live recordings I've heard, too, and nothing Jewel does in the future is going to change the fact that I love those songs. I would like to think that I'm not obligated to love everything she puts out, though. She has great talent, and if she does put out an album I don't like, I'm going to say, "Hey, I don't like that." Like I said, though... it's not going to change the fact that I love her other work. I'm also going to withhold judgment as to whether the "new album sucks" or not until I actually hear it. Until I hear it and decide I don't like it, I'll look forward to it, because I happen to like Jewel's voice, and her musical style, and I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. If it turns out I'd rather listen to the Spice Girls for 24 hours straight than Jewel's new album, though... well, I'd like to reserve my right to say so. If she chooses to move in a different musical direction than where my tastes lie, that's fine, and I wish her the best of luck... and it's not going to change the fact that I think Pieces of You, and the couple live recordings I've got of her, are amazing. In short - I'm a fan, but I'm not going to worship the ground she walks on. Maybe I'm busting on somebody's golden calf here, but I think some of y'all are getting a little too possessive (and worshipful) of Jewel and her music. And, for what it's worth, I'm looking forward to hearing the holiday album... it will certainly be something a little different, and might just be a refreshing change. In the meantime, there's a lot of other good music out there... we're not going to have nothing to listen to if we have to wait for a new, non-holiday, Jewel album. Cut her some slack, and cut yourselves some slack. You're not obligated to love everything she does, and she's certainly not obligated to do everything to please us.
