We'd all like to see some new Jewel stuff and we're all really disappointed about the delay and final cancellation of FCS. However, Sean implies that the delay and cancellation was out of Jewel's hands and the complete workings of her "money-hungry record company". Now I will be the very last person in the world to stick up for Atlantic, but I don't think they did this against her will. I would imagine she concurred, if not conceived of the idea. It wouldn't surprise me however, if we do see the recordings in the future someday. Something in a Box set, or what have you. I'll be real honest with you, even if Jewel was part of the cancellation of the last album, it still was a pretty crappy thing to do to us. I can understand the logistics of what happened. Jewel didn't want to sell old idea's for fear of giving the audience a dated idea of her talent, but I disagree with canceling the project all together. The album should be released independently or with the new one as an option. Perhaps with graphics that CLEARLY explain that it contains dated material. It stands to reason that you don't get people's hopes up and then change your mind unless you have an exceptionally good reason. Jewel's reason was good, but I still feel there was an alternative. POY was a weak and shallow album? Weak (musically) maybe, shallow no. Don't confuse the two, POY always had good intentions, I believe that's why it did so well. Jewel found out very early in her career that innocence sells. However, saying that she abruptly discontinued her "anarchistic girrrl ways" because she wanted to sell a different image I think is wrong. I always viewed Jewel's change (if there was one to speak of) as simply her growing up. Race Car Driver wasn't anything like Metallica. Jewel's "hard" edge was always more humorous than bloody. I think she would be the first to say that. That's not to say Jewel couldn't shred if she felt the need, but I don't think that was ever really an intention unless it was an adolescent girl phase. Anyway, like I said I'm disappointed too that we might not see FCS, and yes I do think that was bad PR on Jewel's sake. Of course I'm sure I'll get over it and hardly anyone will get hurt. :) - -Bruce BruceWas@juno.com PS On the other hand she did say... Anyway, if the lyrics of "Wish You Were Here" are as Martin wrote in his mail, it is definitely the Rednex song. It was played on the radio here in Belgium quite regularly a year ago or so, but I haven't heard it any more in a long time. Ok, so far for my first post, and back to work :) Cheers, Joris. - -- we49867@vub.ac.be ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 08:22:51 -0400 From: "Seth D. Fulmer" Subject: Re: "Wish You Were Here" Jewel Movie Song? First of all...when I heard the song at first, I thought it was Jewel and made a request to the list for the lyrics. After I received feedback a couple of weeks ago and listened to it again, I realize that it clearly can't be Jewel. The #1 reason is...When has Jewel EVER sang with backup singers? I don't think I've ever heard a song, not that I've heard many, but my Real Audio collection is well over 100 MB and I have some songs on tape as well that aren't in that collection. When I listened to it, I was wondering "Who is that in the background that repeats "wish you were here" during the chorus? The two possibilities are: the song was altered by computer, Or, she had backup singers. The 2nd of those hasn't been done yet, and to my knowledge, Jewel's not into the whole computerized thing like some other bands. Anyhow...I hope I didn't cause any problems by my post a couple weeks ago or this one. Take care and I hope everyone has a Fantastic Day!! :) Seth Fulmer A.K.A. Fulmer" Subject: Getting back to POY Hi everybody :) This isn't that much News or anything...I'm more-or-less rambling...but I was just listening to MAX 95.7, a relatively new radio station in the Philadelphia area, and they played Jewel's YWMFM. It felt almost like when you see a long lost brother or sister. I've been listening so much to the Non-POY songs like Carnivour, and Dance between two Women that I've lost focus of the POY songs. The other day I popped in my POY CD and I dunno what it was, but maybe halfway through WWSYS on track 1, I decided to stop it and went to my computer sound files...because the tape player I have at college sucks...My one back home is MUCH better. I just remembered when I listened to YWMFM when I first heard it while at work and it was on the radio, but with all the background noise I could barely hear the radio...However, that was the only song I was able to hear from beginning to end, even with the forklift trucks, their honking, and other background noise. It was so cool! But hearing it again like brought it all back because in another 2 weeks..last year, I started working and also when I heard YWMFM. I joined this list a month from now..but last year. It just seems so cool..first that I remember that, and 2nd because before college I hated music all together(except for like Christmas music) and when I heard YWMFM on the radio while a Junior in HS...I asked my sister who that was and she said it was Jewel and then I basically put the music down even though I liked it kinda back then. Now, I'm listening to Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Celine Dion, Spice Girls, Matchbox 20, Cranberries, Madonna...You name it...I like most of the softer music and a little of the harder stuff(but only a few songs). Well, I'm just rambling and I don't want to take up all the bandwidth, so I'll zipper my lip(i.e..I'll quiet myself) now :) Take care and Have a Great Day! :) Seth Fulmer A.K.A. I don't think Jewel is "innocent and angelic" to sell albums, nor do I think she's promoting her breasts to do the same. If you're upset about the album, that's one thing, but you're on this list because you LIKE her, remember? SO stop running her through the gutter. AND Jewel has done a duet of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer with her motherseveral times, and it always came out beautiful. What intrigues me is the "Christmas" thing. Unless I'm mistaken, I didn't think she was Christian. I've heard her describe herself as more "spiritual" than "religious"; and that this album will capture the "spirituality of the season". Now, in addition to Christmas, this holiday season also encompases Kwanza, Haunnaka, and Yule (*wink*wink* you other pagan EDA's out there!), among others. I find it rather exciting to see how she may interpret the spirituality of a season that is a conglomeration of very diverse ideologies. As far as lyrics in Latin and arias, well, let's cut her some slack. Its natural for an artist to explore different directions as part of her evolution. It will become part of our evolution as well. Let her run it up the flag pole, and we'll see who salutes. We can't expect to like everything released by such a prolific performer. These may be directions that she chooses not to experiment with again, but I look forward to watching, and sharing in, her musical development. WHy did you start listening to Jewel?? was it because of her breasts, or smile, or her crooked tooth...well thats not why I did. I started listening to Jewel because of the way her music made me feel. Because I felt like there was someone else out there who understood more than a normal person did, someone with a soul full of grace and understanding and above all, empathy. Jewel has been through so many things in her life and she has fought so hard to achieve her dreams, and she has shared those dreams with us. I have the up-most respect and admiration for her. I have enough respect I don't need to dwell on the fact that she has a crooked tooth. We need to listen to Jewel's messages she puts in her songs and we will all see, she doesn't want us to talk of bad things, of how people have things wrong with them, she wants us to look past that and see the potential that everyone, no matter who they are or what they do, holds inside of them. I'm sorry I may not make any sense...Im just kind of frustrated with you guys. Im also frustrated with all of this talk of disapointment. Why are you dissapointed in Jewel?? She doesn't even need to sing and put out the music she does, or put on free concerts, or give us the inside track on upcoming events. She does that because she is a good person. Im excited to hear jewel's Cd because it is Jewel, because she feels it is worth putting out, and I respect her judgement. Sure, the cd she said was coming isn't but, one is. and you will here NEW Jewel, a Jewel that she obviously wants people to hear or she wouldn't be putting it out. again, quit your judging, if there is one thing I hate it is stereo typing and racism and you are stereo typing Jewel. You don't even know what the new cd will be and you have already put your firm opinion down on it. Im sorry I took up so much space, and I am very sorry if I offended anyone, but, this is a place to voice your opinion on jewel. thanx for the space my angel love goes out to you all, if any of you need a friend to talk to I am always here... We should be pleased and grateful with whatever she puts out, and curious to see the difference and the variety in her work. Since we all know how talented she is, we should assume and expect the best without doubting. Sure, it's very disappointing not to have the old favorites coming out after all and being replaced by a holiday album that sounds more trendy than Jewel Style would have been thought to be. But, as it is, she's coming out with something. If we bombard her with complaints then she may think, "are these the every day angels I thought I knew? I guess not, this proves just how devoted and open minded they really were." WE wouldn't want to disappoint the start of the EDAs now would we? I should think not. And I also think it is very likely for the other recordings to be released some time, especially if Jewel keeps going at the rate she is. Those are the kind of songs we are used to admire Jewel for doing, but I think we should be more open minded. Heck, you guys have JewelStock, which, if not recorded, is at least LIVE--be glad for some fresh new songs! Be glad and curious, without intentions of whining to Jewel. I doubt she needs to hear that right now. Sam the ? angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #291 ***************************
