I'm not goin to hedge my bets. I don't think this is (won't my face be red it it is) a song by Jewel. It is definitely not sung by her. There are pronunciations and vocal qualities, the vibrato and "throatiness", that don't match anything I've ever heard from Jewel. Milla sounds a lot more like the singer of that song. As for the lyrics, I didn't hear anything that I'd call typically Jewel. And, with Ang Lee taking such pains to make his movie production look authentic (see the Kansas City Star series of articles), the musical accompaniment is just out of place. This makes me think it is not related to the movie at all. There will be a contest to name the color of red my face will turn if I'm wrong about this :) Chopped Liver (Charlie) watkins@selway.umt.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 23:25:26 -0600 (MDT) From: Charlie Watkins Subject: Re: Sucky New Album On Thu, 28 May 1998, Sean Hooks wrote: > I'd just like to voice my disappointment upon hearing that Jewel's 2nd > album is finally coming and that after all this waiting, it's not going to > be the Bearsville recordings or any semblance thereof. I am looking forward to it, but I am also disappointed that the Beasville recordings may never be published. I mention this very likelyhood the first time the delay was announced in 1996, lamenting that we would be denied access to this crucial period in Jewel's artistic development. I am sad to see it has come true. You are not the only one to complain, Sean. I wrote of my disappointment again this week. But, I mentioned that the situation made less ligitimate means of obtaining the songs look appealing. My email never made it to the list because of policies against this, which I fully understand and completely agree with. I think people were trying to be polite and not complain about the new "holiday" CD, because, hey, it is aleast _something_. I THINK THIS SUCKS, TOO. But what are we to do? It's her career. I suppose it's possible to barrage her with pleading and begging, but where do we direct this? This is not an idle question. I'd like to know. Because I'm ready to do it. Anyone else? Hmmm...I have to admit, I wasn't exactly thrilled to hear about the new "Christmas like" album either. I remember reading the Rolling Stone cover story (last year, can't remember which month) and the author mentioned a few work-in-progress numbers...and she said that there was one "dark and urgent" number. I was like, "Yay....Jewel and some angsty songs...definitely good." But now...don't get me wrong, Angel Standing By is one of my all time favourite songs, but Jewel has a lot more to offer than that. SIBTW, Carnivore, and all the other angelfood songs all have a lot of witty, ironic lyrics, which will definitely win over the critics who think that she's nothing more than a space cadet. Oh well...I've always said that Jewel could bark like a dog and it'll still be music to my ears. Although I'm dissappointed that Fritz Creek Store never made it, I'm also kinda excited about what she has in store for us. She's definitely growing, as a musician and as an individual, and it'll really be exciting to be right there with her as it happens. What is up? Tonight, I invited several people to the too often dead AOL Everyday Angels chat. We were reminiscing to the times when there would be 20 edas in the room at once. That is when the list was much closer. I realize that people can not make it to the Thursday night chats for whatever reason, and that is cool. My point is though, try to chat if you can. Here is what I did before and it worked great. Go to the member diretory and type in EDA and Jewel. When I typed this in, I got 89 people with that in their profile, all EDA's. I put as many of them as I could fit onto my buddy list. I made a seperate list for them called Angels. So, when I sign on and loook at my buddy list and I see that 4-5 EDAs are on, I can invite them to chat with Buddy Chat. Everybody just try it, put some EDA;s on your list and talk to them if they are on, get to know them. And by the way, if you are an AOL eda, go ahead and put that in your profile. :) Lets chat@! I so needed a sanity moment. I got to finish my book (Cosmological Eye by Henry Miller--highly recomended, especially for the tormented artist!), read more of another (Devil In Paradise, another Henry Miller), write some poems, and half a song. I met some cool people on the beach/boardwalk too. I meet cool people everywhere. . .this world is so cool! I love it! anyways. . .I was on my way to my car, and I stopped by at the MTV Beach House (it's at Seaside Heights, NJ -- the beach I've gone to since I was born) on the boardwalk, and heard someone tuning a guitar. I thought, "cool, someone else brought their guitar to the beach too?" I'm so dumb! it was Lisa Loeb! so, I hung out there and enjoyed the free concert. she only sang like 2 whole songs. Norm MacDonald was there, but that just wasn't really all that exciting (I had missed Lisa's tour to Philly to go see Steve Poltz May 6 -- what a pleasant surprise). I think I was on MTV. 'cuz they cleared the beach for the NEW veejay (Jesse?) to announce videos or something, but, I happened to just sneak in, and splash around in the water, and play my guitar and stuff in the background. so if anyone saw this broadcast, and saw some crazy girl, wearing a skirt on the beach, running around with a guitar. . .that was me! I'll never now (don't have cable, and don't watch TV anyways!) I hope other NJ EDAs'll check out the beach house for other exciting stuff going on this summer, and I hope to see everyone this weekend! Love Always! I like most of you other angels have expected and waited and hoped and salivated and wished ,and to sum it up just couldn't wait for the album to be realeased. But I also understand why it's not and think that I wouldn't have it released either if I were in Jewels shoes.I feel bad that some of you out there are gettting all upset and lashing out at the decision that was made by Jewel not to release it.Wise man once said "Don't pass judgement on another until you 've walked a mile in their footsteps". Those that are critiquing Jewel for not releasing the album I just want to say this, and before I say I would like to mention I mean no disrespect or hard feelings I'm just stating how I see things and trying to show you where I think Jewel is coming from. First have any of you done something so much that it lost its meaning or value to you?God knows I have. I sing in a couple choirs around my town and I'll tell you even after about 2 and ahalf or 3 months of rehearsing, singing and performing a set list of several differnt songs it gets incredibly boring and the songs wich at first had an incredible amount of meaning when I first read through the lyrics soon became just more words on paper and it becomes rather (I know some of you hate this word back from the Leno show in Jan.)Redundant and meaningless.I'm just taking a stab in the dark here but some of the songs that were supposed to be on"FCS" are songs that Jewel has been singing since before and shortly after the release of "POY" and all thru her tours too.She has been singing the same songs for years and years now and can you imagine what the release of this Cd would mean at least a couple more years of Jewel being forced to do what to her must be ancient and, for lack of a better word, Redundant material by now. Give Jewel a break and let her stretch and spread her wings a bit more and don't be so critical.Geez I'm bummed about it too but some of you are acting as if you've been shot in the face. Thanx for hearing my thoughts- Mike (The Someday Angel) If I've affended any of you let me know, but I mean what I say and stand by it. Hi Angels ; ) Such a long time since my last posting! So I'm raising my periscope again, and I got some IMPORTANT stuff to tell you :) Actually I've been really fuzzy about this "Wish You Were Here" song too. And at least I THINK I've got reliable facts on this one now.. so I hope this is some kinda help for ya'll, including MrBB :) Here's my story: - ------------------------- It was back in the very beginning of my Jewel-Fan 'career'. I wasn't yet on this list and I didn't even know about it.. I was there alone with my POY and I was like searching all over the planet for something more!! What I got was the Internet, and I realized that there were a lot of good people out there that shared the same passion for her music as I did my self!! Talk of a Greenhorn :) So, I was looking for songs all over the place and I found some for a good start. Then I found you angels! and got hold of some angelfood and I was up'n running ya know :) But there was something that kinda screwed up my mind a bit.. I had this song "Wish You Were Here" as a soundfile and I was so confused. I knew I'd heard it before many times and that it didn't really make sense that to be Jewel.. and I didn't really like the song either. I just couldn't figure out who else could have possibly made it, I mean the voice is still quite alike Jewel, isn't it after all? It's just the lyrics that doesn't really fit in.. So.. hey let's get to the point!! Eventually I went over to my cousin's house and we were just listening to some music and I had my computer with me and we were playing around with it, and then she saw that song and said like "-Hey you!, that song couldn't be Jewel!, That's Rednex!!" And I said "Yeah, of course it is!! So why didn't I figure that out b4 huh??" Wow, that was a relief!! So for you guys who have never even heard of "Rednex" before I'm telling you what I know!! Rednex is a Swedish "wild" band that was kind of popular over here for quite a while. The music they're playing is mostly some way of screwed up country-disco or whatever you'd call it.. I've never been into that kind of music, for me it's just one of those pompin'n stompin' heard on the radio for too much time kind of songs like "Cotton Eye Joe" and some more, I don't want to remember anyway.. But then they also did this single "Wish You Were Here" with a much softer sound than their other disco bip bop crap ; ) It has played on the radio here in Sweden for like thousand times, but that was some years ago.. and I don't listen to the radio very often. So don't worry angels, that's not Jewel. I promise.. Anyway, to make sure we're on the right track, the beginning of the lyrics goes something like this: - ------------------------------ Wish You were here, Need you my country man, Wish You were here, Wish You were here, Don't You know the stove is getting colder? And I miss you like h***... - ------------------------------- Rednex - Wish You Were Here I hope this straightened up some'o your question marks into marks of exclamation! : ) and here's for you curious guys and gals who has got a web-browser: http://www.bahnhof.se/~rednex/menu.html That's what I found.. The Rednex Official. ^_^ Wew, did I write all this..!? ewps.. ;- ) Take care all of you, /\/\artin "The Angel On The Air~" ---->> http://surf.to/mrw ICQ: 2994702 ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #290 ***************************
