Wow, it's good to be back (not like anyone knew I was gone). :) The list seems to be the same, except for that I don't recognize a lot of the people posting. What's different is that I changed my address. Used to be sparksmark@juno.com Now it's this. When I last went to Virgin Records in L.A., they had a lot of signed copies of her poetry book, along with the CDs and tapes. Just wondering...who wants a signed copy of the book? I might be able to help you out. Just let me know. There is this thing called "The Mini Page" that appears inside of quite a few Sunday newspapers (in the USA, anyway). It's like a little activity thing for little kids or something. The 5 April 1998 issue has a VERY short article on Jewel (it's maybe 100 words or so). I don't particularly want it but I'm certainly not gonna throw it out. Maybe one of you want to add it to your collection of magazine articles or whatever... The first person to send me their mailing address can have it. P.S. If anyone on this list has any Art of Noise stuff to get rid of (a likely story!), keep me in mind... This looks like a mistake to me. I think they got it mixed up with the soundtrack for Ken Burns' "Civil War", a documentary shown on PBS. How? Well, the original working title for RWD was Civil War. Anyway, be warned. I think it would be extremely unlikely that the sound track for RWD would be out this soon, anyway. This makes me think. I'm sure Jewel has passed the time on location by singing once or twice. Now, if Ang Lee heard her it seems like he would be _compelled_ to use her in the soundtrack, or even sing on screen. Just wishful thinking. :) Chopped Liver (Charlie) watkins@selway.umt.edu Share publicly, flame privately, " 'Cause anyone can start a conflict it's harder yet to disregard it ". ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 02:27:31 -0500 (EST) From: Sean Hooks Subject: Sucky New Album(my last post from this address) I'd just like to voice my disappointment upon hearing that Jewel's 2nd album is finally coming and that after all this waiting, it's not going to be the Bearsville recordings or any semblance thereof. Gone are the plans for an album that would feature the likes of Moon Over Austin, Nicotine Love, Sometimes it be That Way, 1,000 Miles Away, the album where the two first singles were already planned to be Carnivore and Satellite, the album Jewel made for a reason, promised us as fans, and then let her money-hungry record company keep delaying so that now it looks like it'll never be released. Instead, we will get some Christmas-themed album of new material including songs in Latin? Come on. I can't be the only one who is dismayed by the loss forever apparently, of Fritz Creek Store/The Bearsville Session/whatever you want to call them. Hey, maybe the new album will be good but what was going to be the new album was a sure thing. I've always thought Pieces of You was not a strong album and almost all of the best Jewel songs are non-album unreleased stuff. I'm Sensitive, YWMFM, Painters, and Morning Song are among Jewel's weaker, more shallow, more one dimensional songs and I have always disliked them. And FCS/Bearsville seemed like such a great change up for a second album what with its band and great song selection full of deep, meanigful, emotively powerful songs, not the soft coddling spirituality she admits to trying to conjure up to keep with the "Christmas spirit." Not for nothing, but for me, Jewel needs to stop trying to come across as so nice and sweet and wholesome. That's not what early Jewel was about, especially in live performance. Her strength has always been in her duality, sickly sweet on the surface but a real life human beneath her stage presence full of sarcasm, wit, obscenities, and vehement anger. Jewel's most powerful and meaningful songs are her most angry and distressed. The essence of Jewel and her value as a songwriter comparable to Dylan, Mitchell, Springsteen, and Baez comes from her anger and rage, from Nicotine Love, RaceCar Driver, God's Gift to Women, Jessica, Flower, Foolish Games, Daddy. Just look at the setlist from Jewelstock, who else would have the balls to fill an encore with Nikos, Amen, You're So Small and then end the most poignant and longest(2 and a half hours) concert of her career with Nicotine Love, a song about a vengeful female serial killer, leaving the audience with our heart truly crushed in her fist. Jewel's beauty is not in her purity or angelicness, its in her anger, her disgust at being raised by nature and goodness and being exposed to a society of loathesome fakeness and duplicity and hypocrisy. It's in her poetry too, reread the original As A Child I Walked, her best poem ever, along with Infatuation, Bukowski's Widow, Taking the Slave, Father of a Deaf Girl, Vincent Said, The Strip. Now of course this is all just my opinion, but as a list veteran and long time Jewel fan, these are some of my discoveries, hopefully I've opened some minds. This is my last post as SHOOKS@drew.edu. I have graduated from Drew and am unsubscribing from the list from here. I will be resubbing soon at a new address, Sean35RL@aol.com. Here's to all of you. Be well. I love the fact that it is happening again. It's hard to realise what a really big thing this actually is. Chamber Music was really the biggest example to date of such a concept. Rich Aristocratic (usually French) families would hire small chamer orchestrial musicians to play at thier parties for guests. Many composers lived with the families and actually wrote music specifically for them. This was all very popular in the Classical and (moreso) Romantic periods of music. In my opinion the Romantic Era was one of mankinds greatest times for music. Nothing could have been more pure than what composers like Beethoven, Listz, Mehndelsson, and my favorite Berlioz (among hunderds others) were writing at that time. Up until the Romantic era music was very conservative and structured. Almost mathmatic. Suddenlly the mold was broken by Beethoven and the world became alive. Music was simply passionate and intimate. Honest and beautiful. The people loved it. Everyone started reading Shakespeare sonnets and lamenting over Faust. Over time we kept exploring music, but not necessarily for beauty. We had composers and musicians that wrote intentionally dissonent music to complement the war-time eras we'd seen. Painter's like Picasso started drawing completely abstract abhorations of what we thought beauty was to show another reality emerging in our time. Now the time has come to return to the passion, commitment, beauty and most imortant intamcy. The LRT is an amazingly wonderful idea, even if it is centuries old. Sure, Jewel is beautiful, but it doesn't matter if she has crooked teeth, or if some people say she is over-weight. Oh yeah, she is not over weight one bit. She's perfect the way she is. What really bugs me though is that my friend's dad asked me what I listened to in music and I said Jewel. He asked me this "Oh really? Did she ever get her tooth fixed?" I was so mad at him. I said in reply "what does it matter?" Then, the worst part: he starts laughing at me! How rude can people get?! I mean come on... Jewel is perfect the way she is. Her passion, loveliness and un-perfectness makes her the best thing in the world. Don't complain about it. It rings in at #49 (They show the top 50 in today's paper) It's not the highest "new" book, as #'s 14 & 21 are new on the chart. It'll be interesting to see how high it may go on various lists, I've never really followed any best seller lists for books, so I have no idea how poetry books usually do on these things. (The paper also shows two books as being ranked 100 & 121 last week, so maybe even if ANWA falls out of the top 50, we can chart it's position on the USA Today website, which likely shows more than the top 50) Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 11:31:28 EDT From: CopperTex@aol.com Subject: Still looking for a signed copy of ANWA??? Jewel's most powerful and > meaningful songs are her most angry and distressed. As usual you hit the nail right on the head. Nevertheless I wouldn't judge so harsh so early.... The christmas season and the way it is handled by modern society offers a LOT of opportunities to write critical lyrics about if you ask me... In fact this could become a very controversial album. I sure hope so. If all it contains is a collection of "Angel Standing By"-type songs on the other hand, it would definitely be a step backwards.... As much as I am disappointed with the trashing of all those Bearsville recordings I'd also like to try to explain that decision. I think it was rather obvious that she was pretty much fed up with promoting POY for the last three (!) years, having to play similar setlists at each and every concert. No wonder. Now imagine FCS would be released. That would mean another long time of promotion work with songs that are already two years old to her. Seems a very effective way to spoil music and touring for her forever.... So I guess the decision to put FCS on hold was primarily Jewel's and not Atlantic's as I'm pretty sure they would have LOVED to put it out. An almost guaranteed commercial success. This brings us to the new album. Here's a theory for you: I think this album may well be sort of a compromise between Atlantic's wishes to release new Jewel stuff and Jewel's wishes to take a break from music and explore her other artistical "limbs". By declaring this a "Christmas Album" she can probably keep all this promotion activity to a minimum AND I'm pretty sure that there won't be a tour... Also, remember the interview where she said that wouldn't really call it her second album and Mr BB's comment that there will be a new album in 1999. So in spite of all the disappointment about the loss of some really great songs, maybe we should be thankful for a wise decision that will help to keep Jewel recording music and touring for (hopefully) many, many years to come. I would do anything though, to get my hands on those Bearsville recordings...... :-) Enough babbling...... Tell me what you think...... Cheers !
