I'm always trying to widen my horizons in music terms and so i was wondering if anybody could recommend any artists or bands that are like Jewel...coz the nearest i can get is Beth Orton and Tracy Chapman. Whats up? :-) ok.. let's see.. the first time I heard Jewel was 2 years ago..maybe 3, im not sure. I was like 15, and just happened to turn on the television one day, and I flipped the channel to mtv, and I saw this video with this girl singing in a bathroom! And i was like, ok.. it piqued my curiosity. So, i continued to watch it, and saw that the name of the song was Who Will Save Your Soul? and the woman's name was Jewel. I instantly loved her when i heard the song, and thought her to be quite creative with the whole video. Anyway, like 3 months later, i went to the mall with my friend, and i bought Pieces of You at a music store. At first, I didn't like it... the songs were too slow, but as i listened to it a second time, i really delved into the lyrics, and found that Jewel was a truly thoughtful and deep person, and ever since that time, Jewel has come to be my idol in terms of poetry, and the whole concept of following one's dream--not to mention her voice is unlike any i've heard before.. so beautiful! Anyway, thats my story.. hope it didn't bore all of you to death! c-ya. Love Julie "the Rainy Poetic Angel" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 16:05:00 EDT From: AlisonS16 Subject: First Jewel Experience Hi! My name is Alison, I'm 16 from Delaware and this is my very first post. I've been on the list for about 8 months. My first time hearing Jewel was on one of those Entertainment Tonight reports on TV. It was about this singer, Jewel who had lived in Alaska lived out of her van. This was before any of her music had been released. I thought she was a great singer and then never heard much about her until I heard her first release on the radio, WWSYS. I've been hooked ever since. Angel love, Alison ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 14:07:33 -0700 From: Carolyn Lake Subject: Online Mag Hey everybody! Okay, I'm creating an online mag, and well, I really don't have much to put in it. And I was wondering if any of you would like to write an aritcle about Jewel. Short or long, I don't care. I just thought that it might attract more people to my page, considering how kewl Jewel is. *smile* Anywayz, if ya do, E-mail me, k? Or if you just want to send me the article and your name (it could be your full name or just your first name), that'z okay too. Well, I hope I didn't waste your time!!! :o) And the page address is http://expage.com/page/caro1784 if ya wanna see what crummy work is there so far. Carrie the perfect little angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 17:29:14 EDT From: Angeljlb96 Subject: my page, etc. Hi Angels! I wanted to let you all know that my Jewel poetry page is back up (without the poems from the book because of copyright problems) with several Jewel poems not in the book. I also have the whole poem "As a Child I Walked..." if anybody would like to see that. There's also a few other pages on there if you'd like to visit them...one more on Jewel. Plus links to the best pages =) Grey Matter http://members.aol.com/angeljlb96/grey-matter.html On another issue...there's a half a page devoted to Jewel in this months Teen with Matt Damon in the corner and that Clarissa chick =) on the front. She is also in this months YM...can't remember who's on the cover though. But there's a cute pic of her in the Grammy dress, and one of her by the horoscopes. Also...wanted to share my exciting news...I got my ANWA from Waldenbooks, and I asked the salesperson if I could have the rack that it was on because it had this awesome still from the Foolish Games video on top and she said yea...I went back the next day, and they had one of those hard screen-like posters up, and she said I could have that when they took it down, too. So...I'm happy =) That's all for now! Love, Jamie *the everyotherday angel (that is really starting to believe that she's really gonna trip at graduation this Saturday)* P.S. In case I forget to do it later this week...HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUSTIN!!! ~You were so sweet, and I fell in love with what I fell in love with~ JK ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 17:48:30 EDT From: Wimbley83 Subject: Re: Signed ANWA Hey, everybody! I know this has been asked time and time again, but if anyone can get their hands on a signed ANWA for me I would be very appreciative. She said something about people noticing her weight and stuff, but teeth fall in the same category. I think she talked about this on MTV live. It just really makes me mad that we talk about these things, sorry for taking up your so precious time. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 17:03:13 -0700 From: Regina Sy Subject: jewel's crooked teeth In an article in Time Out NY Issue 138 (that was copied and sent to the list by Rachel Kramer Bussel for our benefit), one of the questions Jewel was asked by the magazine was "Do you embrace your crooked teeth?" and her response was "I don't think about them too much, to tell you the truth. I could never afford braces as a kid, and that's sort of the way it all worked out. My dad didn't think I'd be famous." so yes, she does have crooked teeth. Which one, I'm not really sure. :-) The Tazmanian Angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 22:34:58 EDT From: ABershaw Subject: EDA Ramblings/LRTs 1998/Andres Condon/Jewel content & more.... Hi again, I hardly ever get to post pleasant ramblings anymore, and its way overdue! I've had a lot of cool emails from various EDAs lately & not enough time to reply individually, so here goes with all kinds of miscellaneous stuff.... First, many have asked me about the European CD single of "Morning Song". It includes 3 versions of MS, one being the album version. The "radio mix" which is the version hitting radio in Europe is a completely different version from the album featuring full rythym tracks (drums & bass) as well as some orchestration. It's nice & is very different from the album version. Additional guitar tracks are also provided by David Roth (He sounds familiar... isn't Patty Griffin's guitar player a David Roth? Hmmmm.) The "reggae mix" is similar to the "radio mix" but has a slightly different arrangement. Most EDAs will likely enjoy these alternate versions. This will not be released in North or South America, but is commonly available here as an import now. This coming summer is lookin to be a great time for more of us to meet each other & old friends to hang out again enjoying great live music from the San Diego scene (even without Jewel touring). I still haven't heard dates yet, but the Steve Poltz LRT (Living Room Tour) is apparently going to happen & confirmed dates should be announced sometime soon. In addition, we are in the process of putting together another "Midwest & Northeast" LRT which is going to feature two of my favorites (& Jewel's good pals); Joy Eden Harrison (from Chicago, transplanted from San Diego) & Lisa Sanders (from San Diego) TOGETHER! This will happen around the end of August into early September. We'll finally get these gals out East....& damn, it's about time, too! :-) An anouncement will be forthcoming to apply as a host for one of these LRTs in a month or so. I highly recommend both of these artists to all EDAs. Both have a great album out & are even more wonderful live. I know all who've participated in last years LRTs will certainly be there & I hope a lot of new faces take the chance to scope out this "LRT Phenomenon" in 1998! Somethin is definately GOIN ON here! This whole LRT concept is THE BEST THING to ever emerge from this community, in my opinion. It's certainly one of the coolest things I've ever been involved in & am determined to see it continue. More "Future Folklore" in the making, I'm sure. A lot of people (including many industry people) are watching the EDAs these days, because its such an incredible community doing amazing things. You are really changing the dynamics of the artist/audience relationship with these LRT gigs. Rolling Stone Magazine was in touch with me today & didn't bring up Jewel (Yeeha!). They were fascinated by the "LRT Scene" & will likely be the next in line to do a story on it soon. I also want to thank several EDAs who wrote me privately about enjoying Mossy Kilcher's CD (Jewel's Aunt). I had fun remastering it & hope many new & other archival Kilcher Family releases will become available in the future. (Jewel's Grandmother Ruth performed around Alaska with her two youngest daughters as "The 3 Kilcher Cabbage Heads". Now if we can only find those recordings.......) Many of you will also enjoy the booklet & artwork that comes with Mossy's CD. There are many vintage Homer homestead photos of Jewel's family. Some include Atz' & his sisters Mossy, Stellavera, Wurtila & Catkin singing, Jewel's grandparents Yule & Ruth, as well as more recent pictures. One of the color photos is of Mossy, her son Arlyn & Jewel on horseback when she was 11 or 12 years old. (Its now available at The Kilcher Alaska Webstore at http://www.kilcheralaskastore.com/) Also, I heard back from Andres Condon who said he very much enjoyed meeting & hanging out with the EDAs that went to his gig last Friday night. I know the EDA feelin was mutual because one (Paul) wrote me saying so! :-) I want to let you know that Andres will be there again this coming Friday night. Why do Jewel & Lenedra like Andres so much? Find out for yourself & check out this intimate gig! The info again, is: Bistro 101 in Leucadia, California THIS FRIDAY, May 29th. The venue has great food & is open to all ages. The address is 1650 N. HWY 101 in Leucadia. You can phone Bistro 101 at 760-753-6440. Say hi to Andres for me if you go. I also enjoyed seeing Tom & Nancy Morales in the Jewel footage of "Winter Song" on the Rolling Stone Special! And wasn't that Ric Kaestner, vocalist with Cindy Lee Berryhill's Garage Orchestra looking mesmerized on the floor? :-) It was great seeing many of you along the Cindy Lee Berryhill tour. Keep expanding your music boundaries! Jewel is just the tip of the San Diego iceberg! Missy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 18:49:47 PDT From: "Patrick Rubiano" Subject: Jewel Posters for sale Hello, Because of some new circumstances, I have decided to let go of my collection. I am going through a big change in my life right now, and I realize that one of the things I need to do now... because I didn't before... is to take down these posters. What started out as a harmless hobby, eventually helped this change in my life occur (although it was not the only reason by any means). I was at the point where I felt I wasn't admiring my "gallery" enough... when in reality, it wasn't my "gallery" I needed to pay more attention to... and it's a shame that I had to realize it in this manner. Anyhow... I'm trying really hard to make myself a better person, so this is basically how it works... if you've seen or heard about a Jewel poster... I have it... and I'm selling it (and to keep in spirit of the list, this is of course: Non-Profit). I also have some varied 8" x 10" photos that I'm letting go of too. If you're interested in a detailed list, please E-Mail me back privately with "ATTN: Patrick" in the subject line. A varied version of this post is also being sent to the Kate Winslet list. So if you are interested in Titanic posters, please E-Mail me as well. If you are an Undernet user, you know who I am... and how you can contact me. In closing, just in case some of you are wondering, I have not lost my faith in Jewel as an artist. I am still a fan... but these posters are just too much. My E-Mail is: PRSunburst@HoTMaiL.com Sincerely, Patrick R. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 23:03:10 -0000 From: msinghaus@msmisp.com (Melissa Singhaus) Subject: Can someone tell me where i might find The jewel disk that she reads poetry on. I was flipping through the channels and came across Jewel singing in Wizard of Oz on TNT and I remember thinking "who is this girl trying to be Judy Garland?" (I now realize my grave mistake) Then a few days later I was driving in my car (it was in 1995 when POY was first released.) I heard WWSYS and I thougt it was cool, and then a few days after that Morning Song was on the radio as I was driving in my car to the mall (the first and only time I have heard it on the radio.) They said It was sung by Jewel. So I went into the record store and, with a few extra bucks I had with me, I picked POY. I listened to it when I got home, and it spoke to me. I have listened to it ever since. Almost everyday. Love, Teresa ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #284 ***************************
