Hi Angels! I haven't got my copy of "A Night Without Armor" yet. It's been sent to Australia by surface mail and so will take weeks and weeks to get here. But I did read a version of "As A Child I Walked" in a recent post (Digest #248) and wondered why it was so different from the Jewelstock version. Is that the same version as in the book? If so, I'd like to echo Sean Hooks' sentiments. As Jewel presented it at Jewelstock it is certainly the best of Jewel's poems that I've read or heard . It is now a very pale imitation. As Sean says, why??? The ending of that poem (which I quoted in my post on Jewel and Taoism) is to me the essence of Jewel, and now it's gone!! So I'll quote it again: ". . . until I am able to go back to my lovely mountains or until I am strong enough to bring their essence to the rest of these hungry people who long to remember the simplicity which lies beyond the city's inbred streets and the godliness which resides in us all". Is Jewel feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment by the "noise" (as she puts it) of fame and success and not strong enough to bring the essence of her mountains to herself? I hope not. I'm sure she has that strength. But I wish she hadn't hacked at that poem. I loved it the way it was. Well, I saw the Rolling Stone State of the Union special last night, and I must say... WOW!! Jewel was absolutely fabulous! She was looking as beautiful as ever (which made it extremely difficult for me to concentrate on the music, but I managed). Unfortunately, I didn't get her first performance on tape, but I did get the second song. What was the name of it again? It was amazing! It's already become one of my fav Jewel tunes. Hopefully it will be one of the songs included on her new album, because now I MUST have it!! Anyways, that's my two cents. I could prattle on some more about how Jewel is without a doubt THE most beautiful woman on earth, but I'm sure the rest of you don't want to hear my ramblings :) Steve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 12:10:59 -0400 (EDT) From: Rachel Kramer Bussel Subject: EW ANWA review I Entertainment Weekly, May 29, 1998 (Frank Sinatra on cover) P. 70 - also a photo of Jewel (NOT a new one) and caption: Multifaceted Gems - Jewel chips down to the raw truth in her poems Long before she sold 10 million records, Jewel Kilcher wrote poems. Now, in the tradition of Ezra Pound and Ally Sheedy, the 24-year-old singer presents 109 of them for your reading pleasure. don't expect any roses-are-red stuff: Jewel takes on loneliness, lechery ("The father tries to bond with his teenage boy by ogling my breasts"), war ("My dad went to Vietnam when he was 19 years old. I think it bruised his soul."), and puberty ("I look at young girls now...and I think I've been there) with tenderness and lots of exclamation points. She also rhymes "cripples" with "nipples" and misspells Tom Waits' name. But her best poems, raw autobiographical sketches that chronicle her Alaskan upbringing, hint that Jewel is just a polish away from shining.
