Pathetic. That's all i can say. I think I was the only EDA there, MAYBE one other that i didn't get to talk to. If you were there email me, i was the one wearing all black, with a NIrvana shirt. Anyways, there was nobody there, they didn't have sound most of the time, and when they did it was so low you couldn't hear it. It was on these tv's hung from the ceiling so you couldn't see it, i ended up standing in the middle of one of the cd aisles for an hour. Did any of the other broadcasts turn out good? Or were they all this bad? - -Dan bludlust@liii.com The Morbid Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 00:15:46 -0400 (EDT) From: kartalst@HUGSE1.HARVARD.EDU Subject: the whole stupid copyright law thing with regards to the Jewel potry contest To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hello everyone... I just got home from my evening's hwereabouts to a whopping 55 emails waiting for me to read...all between the hour of 4:40 PM and midnight...interesting... I was thinking this evening about the whole Jewel poetry contest and the copyright laws, and I honestly never participate in it. that prospect has been flushed out the window... ...and i asked myself this question. what if, in a hypothetical world, there were a contest where anyone could submit a 2.5 minute song and one song would win...and Ella Fitzgerald would sing it. This is something that might excite a songwriter, such as Jewel. And let's say that in this hypothetical world and hypothetical contest, well, part of the rules included a clause where the winning songwriter wold have to give up all rights he or she had to the song. And Jewel dreams of ELla singing HER song. Now this is my question. Even though I do not know this Jewel chyckie personally, and even though I don't think any of you do, really, well, perhaps a couple...and none of us can really speak for what is in her mind, anyways...but... Do you think that Jewel would have enough artistic integrity to refuse to enter this contest? We all know how much she has claimed her adoration of Ella's talent, but we all know how important Jewel's art and her dreams are to her...does anyone possibly think that she would give up the rights tto any part of her dream...including even one song...just so she could have a chance at hearing Ella sing it? i don't know...it's like...if you do that, then why would you say "f**k practicality" and move into your van so you could have the freedom of doing what you love? just so part of that can be snatched away from you? it seems to make little sense to me...and i know that the simple answer in that is "stephanie, then, just don't enter the contest." which i am not oging to do. this jewel singer is quite a talent when it comes to her songwriting...but the possibility of her reading 10-70 words of my potery really is not THAT much of a dream to me where i would give up my rights to my creation...to *my* soul's expression... just some food for thought. if those of you feel frustrated with my reasoning or my expression, and if you wish to flame me and "put me in my place" or something, well, then, please feel free to do it privately. i know how to hit the delete key... take care stephanie Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos We should be very greatful to have a kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu limited body...like mine or like The Greek Poet Chyck yours. Wayne today, so I grabbed it and listened to it in the car on my way home. Having been present at the initial presentation of several of the poems (oh, what a braggart) I was pleased to her Jewel read them again with nary an edit; it was very interesting to hear the rest as well. A couple of them are rather long stories (prose rather than strictly poetry) and a couple even have proper rhyme and meter (!). The one thing they all have in common is their raw honesty and emotion. Even though Jewel obviously tried to maintain an even tone of voice and let the words carry the message, it's very clear that she touches very close to home with a number of these. Try the ones about Alaska and her family if you want to see a few raw emotions exposed. :-) Highly recommended for serious Jewel fans (that's all of us, right?) Hi folks :-) Those of you who have gotten the CD version of A Night Without Armor and/or who remember MrBBs' post that the track-listing of the 87 poems is NOT with the released CD, will be very pleased to know that one has been designed so you can download it and size it accordingly so you can print it out to fit inside your CDs' case :-) It's available on Adam Longfellow's Pieces of Jewel website. Just go to the site at http://jewel.zoonation.com and either click on the "Poetry" area on the menu at the top of the page, or click on the link that says "Exclusive! Get the missing tracklist". (It's NOT at the menu area that says "Fan Poetry"). Please note that Adam Longfellow and I are going to discuss tomorrow night on how to get printed copies to folks who either can't access web sites or don't have a quality printer. Stay tuned for that info and please do not contact me or Adam yet about obtaining a copy.....I'll post all you need to know when the plans are finalized. Mike :-) P.S. Whoo-hoo! I don't know how many actually went to the broadcast of the poetry reading, but I got to tell jewel happy birthday! If you were there or listened to it in another city, i was the last question and I told her happy birthday, oh yah, in S.F.-our city got like three question and others only got one or two, wonder why? It was so damn exciting. They first told me that only the workers in this booth would be able to ask her a question, but they saw me pacing in front of the booth, so they invited me in to ask a question. They were so cool. The sound kept cutting out at the store though, so for that person who posted about it sucking, it also did in SF.....Such a day, such a day! Completely content, Aurorah p.s.
