Wow...rarely am I at a loss for words. I am not going to sit here and write out set-lists...I was so amazed by their talent (as always) and so inspired by their performances that I lost myself in each song...so, no set lists. There are some things which, however, will no tbe coming out in this review...such as things Jody and Jenny and I had exchanged as far as words and other stuff goes...that selfish, sentimental side of me just wants to keep it inside me... This is the first time that Jenny and Jody ever met. They knew each others' music, as I had given each one each other's album back in February. And slowly, as they had listened more and more, both Jenny and Jody had become fans of each other...that's definitely a COOL thing, and it just showed...it added so much... Dennis Harris came and was so nice as to DAT the whole thing...the recording came out crystal clear...thank you, Dennis. People came around 7 or so, and everyone got "the grand tour" of my beautiful, amazing old house. We all hung out, snacked, talkd, mingled...it was cool to see a cross-over from these 3 e-mail lists...it was definitely a nice group of people! After a brief sound-check with Dennis, we began the show. One of the great things about a living room concert is that the artists involved have their own sort of creative freedom...they aren't restricted to the rigidness of required sets and required set-lengths...Jenny and Jody basically "switched off" every 3 or 4 songs or so...it just added to the peacefulness and the comfortableness of the evening =) i was in the "usual" Stephanie-state of bouncing off the walls with excitement and love and everything else...and my heart was so happy last night, being able to share my two most favourite singers with friends! time and time again I have felt inspired by Jenny and Jody...last night blew me away so much that Websters Dictionary needs to redefine the word "inspiration" this was a completely new experience for both singers. Jenny usually works as a "group effort," depending on hre band to put ou each song...this time she had the adventure of going comlpetely solo & acoustic...just her, her guitar, and her keyboard...and Jody had heard about house concerts, but she had never really experienced it--a room of people who actually CARE (as opposed to a bunch of people at som venue who are loud, talking, not givin a damn...)...I could tell by looking at both singers that they were loving every minute! periodically I lookd around the room...I wanted to make sure my guests were comfortable...and I could tell by looking at each person's face that they were in love with it all...that Jenny and Jody had basically won them over. And so many times, either looking at Jenny & Jody or looking at the audience, I had to fight back tears of such great happiness & elation...there are truly few things in life that are of the *ultimate* importance to me, and being able to share what is nearest and dearest to my heart with the people I love is *right* at the top. And last night, well, I knew that aamzing feeling in the most intimate sense I had ever felt. Thank you, audience, thank you, Jenny & Jody. Jenny played my favourite song of hers..."Music To My Ears" towards the beginning of her second "trade off." She had written it for one of the people who is nearest and dearest to her heart (if anyone wants to know the story about how the song was written, let me know privately...i can tell you some...at least some of what i know...), but she dedicated it to me. Jenny really is a special person...and such a passionate, intense singer. I cried the whole time...sheer happiness. I guess I don't feel completely worthy of her dedication, but oh well...it was so beautiful. I can not wait to hear it on tape! Jody plays this song which puts me in tears whenever I hear it. Her mom is a poet, and Jody really found the beauty in her mom's art...and she turned one of her mom's poems into a song. The song amazes me...because it's beautiful, and because of the amazing symbolism of support and passion of taking one art so beautiful as a poem and sharing it across-platforms with another art called music...the marriage is almost miraculous... Jody & Jenny amused everyone thoroughly throughout the evening with thelir stories...I think they won everyone over...they definitely sang their beautiful little (not really little, more like BIG...) hearts out...i hope that somday i can do with my poetry something as intense as what they do with their songs. After all the singing and stuff, Jenny and Jody experienced "the group picture" phenomenon...god, I felt like I was about to go to the Prom or something as we all crowded onto the stairs...smiled...and said CHEESE... Jenny & Jody were so sweet as to hang out, talk, eat, sign CDs, swap e-mail addresses, and do in the informal/friend/talking way the same type of interaction that they do with their music... Last night I was smiling from ear to ear and had a hard time falling asleep despite being so tired from all the silly little preperations I had done for that one evening...each task and step in preperation was so amazingly happy...because I knew that I was going to have the people I love and my two favourite singers in my own living room...but i just sat there in the dark listening to both Jenny's CD and Jody's CD until I fell asleep, and man-i slept better than I had slept in a few weeks. So that's all that I can tell you. Albert tooks pictures, as always..I want to see them when they're developed! Dennis got an amazing DAT of it all, so we will see what happens with that...and Jenny and Jody had such an amazing time (as did my houesmates) that more living room concerts at casa de moi are definitely "in the works" so to speak! Thank you, everyone--audience members, friends, music lovers alike...Jenny & Jody...Dennis...people who brought yummy food...everyone who bought CDs...people who took pictures...EVERYONE! the feeling inside me right now, even the morning after, is just so beautiful and so perfect...it wouldn;t be the same without *everything* that you have added and brought in to the evening and without *everything* that youa ll mean to me deep inside me. i love you all so much stephanie Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos We should be very greatful to have a kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu limited body...like mine or like The Greek Poet Chyck yours. There is a radio station called mix 102.9, Mix has a new "remix" of Jewel's Foolish Games. Well, the remix play's until she says "You're always crazy like that" and then they make some remark about how crazy she is or something like that. Two nights ago they played that and started saying she put out a poetry book called a "A Night Without Amoooour." They said now a reading from it, I don't remember if they re4ad anything or not but they were saying how she loves to talk about her chest and her butt teeth eyes and how much she loves herself. It's actually pretty funny to hear them make fools of themselves tryin to make fun of Jewel. Brett The Angel Formally Known As.... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 May 1998 14:18:47 From: Butterfly Angel Subject: Steve Poltz -- One Left Shoe Did anyone see the article on Steve Poltz in the May issue of Rolling Stone? If not, here it is: (sorry if this has already been posted!) One Left Shoe Steve Poltz ***1/2 mercury Five years ago -- even with Seventies nostalgia in full swing -- the sonic aggressiveness of grunge and hip hop put singer/songwriters in the shade. Occasionally, writerly devices such as hard-won confessions and tall tales surfaced -- often, like Lyle Lovett's, at the fringes of song-obsessed Nashville. But it wasn't until women as independant minded as Liz Phair opened the door for pop starts as savvy and glamorous as Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morisette and even that coffee house colossus Jewel that Nineties singers/songwriters matched the prominence of Eighties chroniclers like Tracy Chapman and Suzanne Vega. Steve Poltz's debut, One Left Shoe, confidently proceeds as though singer/songwriters are back. And as the cowriter of Jewel's 'You Were Meant For Me' (as well as costar in the video), Poltz, formerly of San Diego's Rugburns, ought to know what's up. With the help of veterans like producer J. Steve Soles and arranger Jimmy Haskell, Poltz offers a collection of subtly Hollywood-ish acoustic pop. He's got a flexible, no sweat voice, too, a light tenor that's all scuffed charm and strummy entitlement. With one major exception -- "Silver Lining," a sweetly cranky, rhythmically tight stroll through late-twentieth century indignities, co-written with Jewel -- the first half of Poltz's album stalls. Songs like "Forbidden Fruit" and the dapper "Impala" fall prey to the classic singer/songwriter offenses of whimsy and windiness. The second half makes a dramatic recovery. Poltz excels with the absurd poignancy of the title ballad, the emotional compression of "Leavin' Again" and the fluid honky tonk of "The Great Mystery." He keeps building from there: "Broken Hearts and Painted Nails" and "Kicking Distance," two passionate, romantic monologues, are like his hell for leather answers to Jewel's "Foolish Games." At times like these, Poltz reminds us of Keith Carradine's character in Robert Altman's Nashville, a dusty mixture of craft and guts. Kansas City Star- May 3rd *note* following article is seriously cut down from orginal size. Pattonsburg, Mo- The hand- painted signs on the red brick walls evoke an ara long past. "we combed the ads and chose the names of real businesses to paint on the stores along out Massachusetts Street. Walking down Pattonsburg's main drag, one is instantly transported to another time and place. True, a few modern accounterment still spoil the effect. But for about nine days later this month dirt will be hauled in to cover the concrete streets. Then, just as they did on that August day in 1863, 150 Confederate guerrillas will attack out of the rising sun, enter "lawrence" from the south east and sweep north up Mass Street- shooting, looting, burning and dragging every able-bodied male resident out to meet his maker (estimated 185 men)...The filmmakers, of "Ride with the Devil", debated what to do with a railroad caboose sitting in what had once been a park at the north end of the street. Deciding it would cost too much to move it, the movie company built a house around it. "This is one of the most complicated sets I've done. We not only have the main street with scenes that will be shot inside the stores, but we also will show the back of the buildings, something you almost never see in westerns." The three-story Eldridge House Hotel at the north-west corner of the set is a phony...gas pipes have been installed to allow for a controlled burn when the hotel goes up in flames. "the only thing that's missing is Mount Oread" referring to the high hill west of the real Lawrence on which the University of Kansas now sits. "At one point Ang actually wanted to know if we could build our own Mount Oread, we decided it wasn't in the budget." And what about that water tower that still rises above Pattonsburg? "That will be hidden behind a column of smoke" - -all quotes above are from Steve Arnold, art director whose film credits include "Forrest Gump", "Face/Off" and "Get Shorty" copied by Duff, a Jewel scholar, who is wondering what Lawrence would be like without the hill she has to walk up every day to get to school- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #245 ***************************
