I have always seen Jewel as the type of person who does not use sex appeal to become famous, so this article seemed ironic. The man who wrote the article implied that Jewel would not have become so successful if she didn't "look like Jewel." I have heard and seen many people insulting Jewel, and usually I am able to ignore them, but this article really angered me. I guess it just hit a sore spot... Hi everybody! What's up? I was wondering if there where any 12 or 13 year old angels out there. Carolyn The Airhead Angel {\o/} /~\ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 May 1998 09:46:57 +1000 From: blh301@coombs.anu.edu.au (Barry Howarth) Subject: Jewel and Taoism Happy May Day Angels! May is a great month. It starts with the day that celebrates ordinary working people all around the world. It then goes on to Mothers Day (in Australia at least), then my birthday, and finally that day we are all so grateful for, Jewel's birthday! One of the reasons I love Jewel and her music so much is she sets up so many reverberationsin my being. I've been away for quite a few weeks and have just started checking through my e-mail, especially the Jewel digests. I was fascinated to read some discussion of "Innocence Maintained". By coincidence I had been thinking about that song myself about the same time as those posts. I have been asked by the daughter of a friend to go to her high school to talk to her class (year 12 here in Australia, the last year of high school) about the Chinese philosophy called Taoism, as it is an interest of mine. Pondering on what I would say I thought I should add a bit of "relevance" and "entertainment", which seem to be essential these days in schools. This brought to mind Jewel's song "Innocence Maintained". While I have no idea if Jewel knows anything about Taoism or not, this song does illustrate (or at least echo) some of the main features of Taoism, as do many other of Jewel's songs and poems. Now I'm not going to go into Taoism here, but here are some of the lines that made me think about Taoism: "nature has a funny way of breaking what does not bend" -- Taoism exalts the weak, the soft, the lowly, what bends and flows, not the strong, the rigid, the hard. "innocence can't be lost, it just needs to be maintained" -- simplicity and "imnnocence" are what the Tao (Way of things, of nature) is. It can't be lost or destroyed but it has to be maintained; you have to work at it by not working at it, as the Taoists would say. Sean Hooks interpretation of "innocence" ["It's a state of mind where your being is pure, calm, serene, and full of youthful vigor and lack of cynicism and doubt"] is in my view spot on, and fits in with Taoism very well. "to be forgiven we must first believe in sin" -- there's a lot in Taoism about words and concepts being defined by their opposites: you can't have "long" without "short", "up" without "down", "good" without "evil", "masters" without "slaves", "law" without "crime". Trying to be "good" creates "evil", so don't try to be "good", just be. There's a poem too by Jewel. I don't know what it is called. I heard it on the JewelStock tapes. It starts: "As a child I walked with noisy fingers along the hemline of so many meadows of back home". And it ends: ". . . until I am able to go back to my lovely mountains or until I am strong enough to bring their essence to the rest of these hungry people who long to remember the simplicity which lies beyond the city's inbred streets and the godliness which resides in us all". Laozi and Zhuangzi would agree wholeheartedly (almost). Barry The Red and Black Angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 18:58:13 EST From: "Kelly Gallagher" Subject: NJC:Lilith Fair Auditions in Philly this is kind of long. it's about my experience playing at the Lilith Fair Auditions in Philly. well, I had a great time last night! we had the auditions for Lilith Fair '98. I didn't get the spot that was open, but, I kind of knew I wouldn't. that didn't stop me from having a great time. honestly, I thought they were going to pick one girl for each show in the area (Hershey, Pittsburg, Camden, etc). but, they didn't. one girl - one show. I guess Levi's wasn't really as interested in opening up ALL the local act stages to local girls from the area as they seemed to be when they were advertising. Well, I showed up at 5, like we were supposed to. not everyone was there, but, we chose the order anyway (picking names out of a hat). once the list was decided on, and the alternates (there were 2) were hoping and praying that someone wouldn't show up, we were free for like an hour and a half before the doors opened. most of the girls ran for a bite to eat, but, since I fast on Wednesdays, that's not an option for me. Some other girls ran up to the dressing rooms, and did primping, whatever! so, I grabbed my backpack, and my guitar, and hit the street. I went down the block from the TLA (near the Pontiac something or other, I was right outside a deli - a SURE spot for some loose change), and put on a sidewalk concert (partly inspired by the great Steve Poltz!). It was so much fun. I met a lot of great people, and made almost enough money to cover parking for all the time I was spending there. Some guy came up to me, "hey! you might be interested in that Lilith Fair acoustic showcase that's going on up the block tonight!" I said, "oh really?! you gonna be there? I'm playing there" it was really kind of funny. so, we introduced ourselves, and he want down the street for the great show! I stayed a while longer, until I saw the other girls pour out of the sub shops (sorry, in Philly they call them hoagies?) and pizza places. After everyone was back at the theatre, I decided to pack up and head back. Everyone starting backstage, and was tuning, and setting up. it turned out that both of the alternates got to play! not everyone had showed up by 7, when doors were open. while the crowd started coming in, I sat on the floor, and played some more. some photo-guy thought it was cool, and took my picture! awesome! then, I went to see if any of my friends had shown up (I was expecting my best friend and another girl from school). and I got drafted to be interviewed on TV. I'm not sure what channel, somebody was saying channel 6, but, I don't know. I didn't recognize the reporter, probably 'cuz I don't watch TV! (well, okay, I watch Days of Our Lives). what a great crowd outside! I went back in and hung out in the crowd some more, meeting lots of great people. everyone was backstage. then, my friends showed up. I sat down again, and played a few more songs with them there, and a different little crowd. pretty cool. The show started 'bout 8:30 I'm assuming, I don't wear a watch, but, I heard somebody say it was after 8. then, I decided to go backstage (I was #7, and they were on #5). "Hey! we've been looking for you #7" I guess I should have been backstage longer, but, I wanted to be out in the crowd supporting everyone! so, I went out, what a great audience. even though they weren't as quiet as I would have like them to be (I was the first girl to play a slow song). I dedicated my show to the wonderful people that I recognized at the show, who also threw money into my case on the street. It was such an honor just to play there. I didn't do the P.C. thing and thank the sponsors and the judges, I guess that helps?! everybody else there had record labels, and CDs to sell, managers, and most of them had back-up bands (cellos, drums, violins, other guitars, etc). but, it was great to go out there, all alone, with just my guitar, my voice, and my bare feet. . .what a great feeling! Even though I didn't make the open spot, I know that I really want that to be my life. It's such a great feeling being up there, in front of hundreds of people, showing them everything I have. I want to thank you all again, for all your love and support! Love Always!
