Today's Subjects: ----------------- MrBB/Jewel's birthday/plans for gifts to PoY PO Box etc [Mike Connell Subject: MrBB/Jewel's birthday/plans for gifts to PoY PO Box etc Hi everyone :-) While most of this is intended for the generally few that are giving MrBB some flack for the stance he has to take concerning Jewel's birthday and a potential gift(s) from list members, a lot of it also contains some list history, explaining how he came into his present role on this list. Also, below I partially explain a plan I've set up with Bibi (Jewel's Creative Director) concerning birthday gifts to be sent to the PO Box address listed on the Pieces Of You (POY) CD. Another intent of this is to aid in helping many of you involved with getting a list related present to Jewel for her birthday. For various reasons, while MrBB and I can and will help, we ARE limited in what we can do, simply for the reason of precedent setting actions, and what would happen in the future if we did set a precedent with *individual* requests. (i.e. "you did it once for her, why not me now?") First of all, I need to help explain the voluntary aspect of what MrBB does for this list. Relaying information to the EDAs from Jewel & Lenedra is something he does on a voluntary basis. Personal requests are totally out of the realm of his volunteerism. He simply cannot do what some people ask of him. Two years ago, there was a girl who actually worked for Jewel in the San Diego "office", and one of her duties was that she was also on the list as Hiranya. She regularly partook in list discussion, while also giving us the scoop on a lot of news about Jewel. When the list was much smaller than it is now, and I mean almost one-sixth as large, it was easy for her to do this. As the list grew, the number of daily posts grew to about 100 a day, the Jewel-news list was formed. Hiranya moved to Jewel-news, and subsequently lost a bit oft he pulse of this list. Eventually, in the fall of 1996 she and her family left the San Diego area, and they (Jewel's management) did not fill Hiranya's "list position" with anyone else. Enter MrBB. During early 1996, list member MrBB & Jewel's mother/manager Lenedra became friends. Due to his technical skills in sound engineering and archival management (certainly NOT his typing skills ;-) this relationship slowly grew & Lenedra asked him to accept the position of managing Jewel & The Kilcher Family's recording archive. He accepted. Since he was in regular contact with Jewel's management & he was already a regular on this list, MrBB agreed to voluntarily fill Hiranya's vacant role. That role being simply to forward news about Jewel to this list, (generally long before it hits the rest of the world) & still participating in list discussion. However, he lives in the northeast USA, and is nearly 3,000 miles away from San Diego. It's not like he has constant access/contact with Jewel. Yes, In a way he works part-time for her, but he has other responsibilities, and a life too, and it's on the other side of the continent. Because of his other responsibilities, having a life outside this list and his Jewel Archive duties, he cannot take personal requests. If he did, it would set the precedent that I mentioned above. Not to mention it would snowball on him and he'd constantly get more requests. He doesn't like to have to turn people down. He's really a nice dude, but he just cannot do most of what many people ask of him. Please understand this and cut him some slack :-) Now, to help out in this situation of getting birthday stuff to Jewel, last night I discussed this and other topics at length with Bibi, who is Jewel's Creative Director. (She does Jewel's web page, designed the t-shirts, calender, lyrics books etc) She also oversees the handling of the email and mail Jewel receives. We devised a plan on how to ensure GROUP birthday projects will get special attention when mailed to the PO Box address that is on the POY CD. The plan will cannot be for individuals sending stuff, sorry. Bibi told me that Jewel gets gift items nearly every day to the address in addition to the normal letters, even though she's been out of the limelight since the Super Bowl. Bibi anticipates that the activity will pick up as Jewel's birthday approaches, but not to a large degree. Still, we have to make it that only a GROUP project (and of course there can/may be MANY group projects) can get this special attention. I'll post more on this when we get the final details ironed out.
