So tonight I put a new image on the front of my page, and it is an image map. I just wanted to know if it is working with different browsers. So if you could check it out and e-mail me or sign the guestbook telling me how it is working out, it would be greatly appreciated. It seems a radio friendly song, and by releasing new material it can maintain people's interest in Jewel while waiting for the next album. It seems logical, but based on what Atlantic has done, the logical thing is the thing they won't do. Oh well. In the world of ultra-cool coups, it's hard to top that of Chris Seferyn and Joe Guminger. The partners have landed pop singer Jewel for an intimate cincert Saturday night at their electic Liquid Lounge, 333 Southwest Blvd. "It's actually going to be a benefit for the Make-a-Wish foundation," Seferyn says. And an 15-year-old girl gets her wish. How the Lounge Lizards landed the act: "She came to us,"Seferyn says. "She picked it because she wanted someplace cool." Jewel sightings in the Cowtown have been scarce, even though the singer has been in the area for several weeks working on her movie debut in Ang Lee's "Ride With the Devil" (formerly titled "To Live On") Tickets to the benefit concert also are likely to be scarce. She nearly sold out Memorial Hall last year and her CD sales have been brisk. Tickets are $15, sold only at the door. NO ADVANCE. Good Luck. There it is ANGELS, :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 01:44:51 EDT From: Mandy P311 Subject: Details of KC Jewel Concert Ok guys, hello. I am so bummed. I called around all night, only to find out that I could not get into the show(I am only 18). This show is 21 and over. I decided to turn over this info to those of you who could use it. I really wish more than anything that I could be there with you all. I really do. So, here are the details. I have been told about 10 different stories from all the KC radio stations. Between that information and the article from the Kansas City Star(Through sheer fortune, Liquid Lounge lands Jewel) I think I have it all figured out. I talked to Z95.7, 102.1, 107.3, and even the Rock Tonight. I also called the Liquid Lounge, so it should all be accurate! WHO: those angels 21 and over.. WHAT: According to the owners of the lounge, it will be a benefit for the Make-A-Wish foundation. An "intimate" concert if you will. WHEN: Saturday, April 11, 1998, 7:0 pm WHERE: Liquid Lounge, 333 Southwest Blvd. If I am not mistaken this is in Kansas City, Kansas... " Tickets to the benefit concert also are likely to be scarce." I was told that there would be fifty sold, maybe 100..When I called the stations, they said that many people were beginning to camp out as early as 6am tommorow morning. Tickets are $15, sold only at the door. NO ADVANCE. They will be sold at the door beginning at 7 pm. **Side note--I was talking to this guy from 98.9 THE ROCK(they do not even play Jewel) and we sat there for a good 20 minutes trying to think of a way for me to get in. I am so out of luck :( *** ~SIDE NOTE # 2~~ When I called one radio station, I asked them to play Morning Song and they said they would. Now, if they did, I don't know, I continued calling other stations.... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 01:14:35 -0700 From: Jay Johnson Subject: Re: A Few Things... Actually, I thought it was something a tad bit different (don't quote me on this, as I'm not definitely sure). I remember hearing or reading that the Interlochen had music majors. The thing was, Jewel wanted to participate in a theatre production, and only theater/drama majors were allowed (or at least not music majors). Anyways, Jewel convinced them to let her audition, and she did such an excellent job, that the school changed their policy and opened up the productions to all majors. This makes me even more anxious to see her in the movie, when it comes out. I know it will be superb. and hey, have a great day, everyday!!! Jay J. > Happy Easter! (or whatever you celebrate) > Maggie, the rambling angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 03:05:18 -0400 From: David Beery Subject: Interlochen Arts Acadamy Was: A Few Things.. Yes, Jewel did attend the Interlochen Arts Academy her Junior and Senior year (1990 to 1992)of high school. Jewel originally thought she was going to sing the blues but Interlochen had her sing opera instead. Personally, though she was probably upset at the time, I think this had a positive benefit on Jewel by extending her vocal ranges and honing her vocal skills. Though I have not heard any of her music before Interlochen so this is an educated guess... Her tuition to this expensive private school was 70% paid by a vocal scholarship. The rest of her first years tuition was covered by the fine folks of Homer Alaska. While at Interlochen she studied Opera, guitar, she modeled in her spare time for the art department, sung in the choir and sculptured. At one point in time, the schools drama department was getting ready to put on a play of sorts. At this time, the only people who could participate in the plays were students of the drama department, but Jewel tried out anyway. From what I hear she did such a good job in the play that they now allow all students of Interlochen to audition for the plays. Interlochen still has a sculpture that Jewel created on display, but alas I have not been able to track it down... everyone I have spoken to knows one is somewhere on campus.. but not where it is... As you walk around the school many unlabeled sculptures are on display inside and outside, some are showing wear and tear from the weather and a few have been hit by plows in the winter. Now I am sure some of you are wondering what is Interlochen? Taken right off their web page : - -=-=-=-=-=-= Interlochen Center for the Arts is home to Interlochen Arts Academy, the nation's premier boarding high school for the arts and academics; Interlochen Arts Camp, the oldest and best known summer arts program; Interlochen Public Radio, a national leader in per capita listener support; and the Interlochen Arts Festival, with over 750 guest artist and student presentations annually. - -=-=-=-=-=-= Here are two news articles taken from a local free weekly news paper called the Northern Express dated February 26th, 1997. Cover headline: Remembering JEWEL when she was Northern Michigan's undiscovered gem... Jewel's talent sparked even when she was just another kid playing local coffeehouses Just a few years ago she was just another kid studying music at Interlochen Arts Acadamy and strumming her guitar in local coffeehouses. And Now? Well now the song-scribbling student Jewel of yesteryear is the Jewel, the Grammy-nominated singer of "Who Will Save Your Soul," a platinum artist whom has opened concerts for Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Melissa Etheridge... not to mention performing as Dorothy in a Lincoln Center production of "The Wizard of Oz." not bad for a kid who once called Northern Michigan home. Jewel Kilcher was a voice major at Interlochen's Arts Academy from 1990-92. she came to Interlochen from Homer, Alaska on a voice scholarship and her success comes as no surprise to her former instructors. "She was a real maverick and she knew exactly where she was going. Actually, she acted like one of our peers," says her voice instructor Ron Gentry. "She's enormously talented and what was fun about her was that she was completely game to try anything," says her other voice instructor, Nicole Philibosian. "I'm sure she has taken that and applied it to what she is doing now." At Interlochen, Jewel's voice studies included opera and performing in choir. "From a classical standpoint she was untrained, but talentwize, she was more than capable," Gentry says. Philibosian remembers one particular time: "Jewel was just getting ready to leave Interlochen and she said, 'I'm going to sing in Traverse City[editors note: That's where I live...] tonight, do you want to come hear me?' She was singing at a coffeehouse, playing her guitar. Jewel just blew me away. I sat there with tears running down my cheeks." "Frankly, I learned a lot from Jewel, she was so focused," she adds. "Vocally, I tried to keep her on track and helped teach her how to sing high notes." How did a student like Jewel, with pop leanings, fit in an arts school like Interlochen? "We're pretty open, but we do not teach blues and pop singing, but here she was, so what were we going to do with her?" Philibosian recalls. "We taught her what we could." Art instructor Jean Parsons remembers the first time she met Jewel: "She just sort of walked into the art department and wanted to be a sculpture model. She became very good friends with all the kids in the art department. She was a very patient model for us. I think what made it workable for her is that she brought her guitar in and practed while she posed. Jewel was composing a lot of songs at that point. So all the day classes, the evenings, and weekends, I would say really helped her do a lot of composing." Jewel was famous for yodeling, which she was taught by her Swiss grandparents. "She yodelled all the time," Parsons says. "That was very commonplace. She was pretty levelheaded here and I hope she doesn't lose that quality." >From the same issue: Hurricane Jewel ~ She's everywhere... So, what were you doing in your late teens? Flipping burgers? Take a look at what Jewel's been up to since she got out of high school... *Jewel has been nominated for the best new female artist in the past year in The MTV Music Awards and currently, the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, The Grammy Awards, and the American Music Awards. *Jewel, who was Grammy-nominated for best new artist and best female pop vocal performance in 1996, helped read the Grammy nominations Jan 8th. She announced not only the classical nominations, but her own as well. *Jewel is the first performer in "The Tonight Show" history to come back and play the same song. She performed her first top ten hit, "[Who Will] Save Your Soul" December of 1995 and June of 1996. *Jewel portrayed Dorothy in the all star stage musical of "The Wizard of OZ." Playing alongside such performers as Natalie Cole, Nathan Lane, and Jackson Browne, USA Today opined that Jewel stole the show. This Lincoln Center even in New York was televised on TNT and recently released as a CD. However, this was not Jewel's first performance at Lincoln Center. In her senior year, Jewel performed there with the Interlochen Arts Academy Choir in 1992. *The Studio tracks of Jewel's first CD, "Pieces of You," were recorded at Neil Young's Broken Arrow Ranch in California. *Jewel Performed with Melissa Etheridge on VH1's "Duets." Jewel has opened on tour for Etheridge, as well as Neil Young, John Haitt, The Beach Boys, and currently Bob Dylan. *Jewel's platinum debut CD, "Pieces of You," ranked No. 58 in Billboard's Top 200 Albums of 1996. Jewel's first single, "Who Will Save Your Soul'" ranked No. 25 in Billboard's Hot 100 Singles of 1996. *Jewel's second single "You Were Meant For Me," is No. 13 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles this week, Jan 20. The single was named the Greatest Gainer in Airplay for the week of Jan. 11. *Jewel's "Pieces Of You," has spent 48 weeks on the Top 200 album chart, and is No. 19 this week, Jan 20, It's highest ranking so far. Right now, POY is at position 97 falling from 87 last week, and has been on the Billboard Top 200 Chart for 112 weeks making it I believe the longest running album on the Top 200 Chart. It's peak possion in the carts was 4. That should answer most of everyone's questions about Jewel & Interlochen. Please correct me if I have any inaccuracies in what I have, also if anyone has any names of any Northern Michigan coffeehouses Jewel played in that would be greatly appreciated. In the little free time I get between work and college, I try to dig up info on Jewel and Interlochen.. right now I do have a number of questions: The Sculpture that Jewel made, what does it look like? any idea where on campus it is? The play that Jewel performed in.. what is it's name? I also understand that it was possibly videotaped?? Any known recordings of Jewel while are School?? any Concerts?? any coffeehouse performances??? How exactly did Jewel get into Interlochen? I have heard numerous conflicting stores. When will she come back to Interlochen to perform?? Any known drawings/paintings/etc.. of Jewel from students in the Art Department?? Anything that might be of relevance?? I thought that I would share my favorite Jewel story. She told this before she sang POY, when she held her concert her in Sweden. I love this story… "I wrote this song for a girl that hates me. I sung in NY City once, at a modeling convention. I didn't go that well. Big surprise, they didn't get it. I was up there and I was singing, "she is a ugly girl", and they were like "she is not talking about me". But I was like "she is a pretty girl, did she sleep with your whole town", and they went like, "Ah, did you tell". The glamour of it all, it was this big free dinner for charity, the best shot design or something, world shattering. And it was great, it was this great meal, but everybody was to busy trying not to eat. I was sitting next to Naomi Campbell, and I was like "are you gonna eat that?". Do you mind. So nobody was listening to me, they were all talking, swapping manikyr and bikini wax tips. Jean-Luc Picard, I forget his real name, but to me he is Jean-Luc Picard. You know the captian of Startrek.. He was sitting there in the front row. I had a really big crush on him. I don't know why. So I was hoping to impress him, you know, but wasn't listening either. He was talking to Kate Moss, the bitch. So he is not listening to me, he is eating salmon. And I get to faggot, and he dropped his fork. And his mouth dropped open. I kinda lost my crush on him. It happens. In fact, during that part, it was the only time it was quiet in the room. You could hear forks dropping everywhere. And gasps. And "did you hear what she just called you?". I was real popular that night. I got done with the song and I was like, and they all had this little united stand of not applauding. So I walked of the stage, it was all right."
