Saw Steve last night at Schubas in Chicago. As usual, a solid and righteous performance to a sold out crowd. A few of the numbers included Silver Lining, Impalla, YWMFM (interjected with a great story about Sean Cassidy and getting drunk in Vegas), Single Life, and The ABC's of Love aka Take Off Your Shirt & Show Me What You Got (I've heard other names, but thats what he called it). If you weren't there, you missed the bus. Beyond being just a great musician, Steve is an outstanding entertainer. I brought some friends who weren't hip to him or the Rugburns, & they left completely floored by his performance. If you haven't seen Steve perform live, or aren't too familiar with his music (I think there may be one or two of you out there!), well, then, the only advice I can give you is to Snap Out Of It :-) Drop what you are doing, and get hip to a Good Thing. Rachel, who pilfered it from the Rugburns List From: Eric Jones Subject: fun with Corel 8 After countless hours of research on Jewel's past (just after the Jeremy Kirchner days) I am finally beginning to reach some conclusions... My studies on the subject are far from complete, but last night I found what I've been looking for for a long time... I won't go into too many details just yet, but I will give you a taste of what's soon to be common knowledge... Jewel's link to the occult!!! Follow a link at the bottom of this message to see a picture of Jewel dressed up like the Wicked Witch of the West... This is just after she met Steve Poltz.. He wanted nothing to do with her, until she used her dark powers to TURN HIM INTO A KLINGON and force him to do her bidding, lest he never be handsome again!!! Jewel Crowned a Poet Although her legion of adoring fans would argue that she's already earned the title, folk sensation Jewel is about to officially become a poet. The sexy songbird's new book of verse, A Night Without Armor (HarperCollins), is due out next month, and orders for the tome are said to be pouring in as booksellers anticipate strong interest from Jewel fans who turned the singer's debut album, Pieces of You, into a 10 million seller. Lest anybody think Jewel doesn't take her poetry muse seriously, she recently sent out a rather, well, poetic declaration as part of a promo package: "I learned how to add and subtract in school; I learned how to be human by reading poetry... even more than my songwriting, it stays closest to my heart." Dish has had a sneak peek at some of the poems, which have been culled from her journals. While there are some that reflect predictable adolescent angst, Jewel acquits herself admirably. The singer — oops, we mean poet — taps into the same intimate, confessional tone that gave such songs as "You Were Meant for Me" an emotional edge. "Infatuation is a strange thing/A bony creature thin/With feeding on itself," begins one poem called "Infatuation." Another, "Saved From Myself," echoes redemption issues in one of the singer's biggest hits, "Who Will Save Your Soul," as Jewel, combating feelings of loneliness, writes she's "too afraid to move." The new book, which hits stores on May 19, is just one of three big projects for the singer this year. Her long-awaited second album, which she started working on back in 1996 and now reportedly features collaborations with the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, is due out in the fall. Sometime after that, watch for her movie debut in Ang Lee's To Live On. — SK == "if money talks, i wanna buy you" "i don't breathe another lover" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Apr 1998 15:34:46 -0400 From: "Jillian D'Urso" Subject: Re: NJC: want to talk yeah i would like to talk to other angels to! At least i'll be reaching the good people! :) Anyway, I thought I would put all my recent ideas for posts into one so y'all don't have to wade through more than one boring and excessively long post :) 1) I recently received Future FolkLore 3 (thanks again Chris!), and I was amazed by the songs and artists included on the tape. Previously, I had only heard you guys talking about Lisa Sanders, Elizabeth Hummel, CLB etc. Now I've heard them and I have to say i'm hooked! So many more CDs I have to buy.... :) Anyway, although all the artists on the tape are great, I was especially impressed with Gregory Page, which brings me round to my question: 'Can anyone please send me some more info on Gregory Page?' It would be great to know if he has any solo albums out etc. I've looked on the web, but didn't really find anything. I also looked on CDNow and I found one solo CD from 1995. Is this the same guy? Anyway, get back to me privately about it. Thanks. 2) Here's something cool: I was listening to the radio, here in England where I live. In England Jewel is like, completely unknown. Compared to how big she is in the US, she is barely even a star here. So, I think you can tell from this how many people listen to, no, have even *heard of* Steve Poltz here. Probably about ooohh, 2 :) Anyway, on Saturday night I was listening to the Bob Harris Show on BBC Radio 2. This is a great show. Bob plays lots of very cool American music such as Jewel, Sarah Mclachlan, Matchbox 20, Counting Crows and on and on. Basically, he plays some of the best and newest stuff from the US. So, I was listening at about 12:30 at night and guess what came on? Silver Lining followed by YWMFM!! I thought this was so cool! He was also talking about how the majority of American music, singer-songwriters in particular do not become successful over here, and he used Steve and Jewel as examples. So, the moral of the story for English EDAs is: Always listen to the Bob Harris Show. Saturday -10 pm till 1 am, on BBC Radio 2 :) 3) Want to hear something really annoying? I spend all the year wishing I was in America so I could go and watch all the cool live concerts. Then, I hear that Steve Poltz is coming to Europe. This made me think, "maybe he's coming to England". So I think "Great!". Then I saw the dates he'd be coming and guess where i'm going to be? Yep, you guessed, in America! DOH! Oh well, maybe next time :) I think thats about it, I don't think there is a number 4! Anyway, in a few days i'm signing off the list for a couple of weeks while i'm on holiday. So, Happy Easter to you all in advance. !Joel! My Spring Break is coming up, and it's going to be pretty uneventful so I thought I'd do an angelfood offer to the this. Thanks to everyone that has sent me tapes (Thanks guys = ) ) I have quite an extensive collection. THe only problem is that if you want me to dub stuff for you, you'll have to send me the tape and return postage. I feel bad about this, but since I'm only 15 and can't drive, I can't worry about driving to get blank tapes. So if you are interested e-mail me with the subject "ANGELFOOD OFFER", and I'll reply with the list of tapes I have, and a more in depth procedure for how to obtain them. Also, thi is only vailable for US angels. Oh yea, could someone please e-mail me with the price of postage per tape. Thanks! Love, *Jen* The Not So Hopelessly Romantic Angel If any of you are interested in trading send me your list! I just wanted to say I just got my FF3 tape in the mail and am listening to it now.. the only thing annoying is that you have to flip the tape after 50mins :) eheh.. I'm soo used to cds being this is my first cassette I've listened to in a long time. :) Thanks guys and gals who all helped in making that tape possible.. it's really cool! In the Philadelphia Inquirer "Parade" magazine-type thing on the Sunday 4/5/98 paper, on page 4 it says: Q: I was appalled by the woman who tried to make our national anthem sound sexy. Dressing respectfully and singing our anthem *as written* should be mandatory conditions for anyone chosen to sing it publicly. Who picks these losers anyway? - Vickie Munden, Crowley TX. A: The singer at the super bowl is selected by the National Football league. The "loser" who performed this year was Jewel Kilcher, 23, a pop star from Alaska whose debut album went platinum. (You obviously didn't buy it.) She decided at the last minute to lip-synch along with her prerecorded version, as some others have done in the past Super Bowls, because it's almost impossible to sing the octave-stretching "Star Spangled Banner" over the roar of thouseands of fans in a packed stadium. Jewel missed her opening cue but caught up with the music. "I don't think I did great," she admitted later. It can happen to the best of them. I just typed straight from the article, and sorry for any spelling errors, if any :) it has a little picture from the super bowl and the caption says: "Jewel at Super Bowl XXXIII: Too sexy for one viewer." hehe. There was also an article on Ani Difranco about her sexuality preferences and stuff, but I don't feel like typing that all in.. maybe I'll just scan the whole page or something...but it took me a couple days just to feel like typing this hehe. Oh well, time to flip the tape.. I gotta get up...ughhh :P Doug PS @ www.lilithfair.com they said they're gonna annouce the lineup & dates for lilith 98 on april 16th, and it's gonna be broadcast live off their website or something. I think it said it would be at 2:30pm, but I don't think I found what timezone it was in. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Apr 1998 21:33:11 EDT From: Beck82 Subject: Favorite Jewel Song Story Hey. Hey! That's about 5.5 tapes worth, given the standard 90 min. tape. (sorry, I have a math minor, so I had to use it for something useful :O) ) > What is your favorite story that Jewel tells during concerts? I would have to say first place (for me, personally), would have to be the one where Jewel and Steve are down in Mexico writing songs (like YWMFM) and they decide to go whale watching. They end up finding a ton of pot on a drug bust with the federales and end up with a picture of Jewel and Steve with the federales, holding AK47 rifles and bags of marijuana. That is a pic that I want to see!!! (this was the first "story" of Jewel's that I had heard, on my first piece of AngelFood, JRTP (thanx Janeene!), and it is still my fave.) 2nd place would have to go to the story of the brain being a condensed ball of hair. (it would be first, but since it is a scientific fact, it came in second :oP ). Honorable mention goes to Steve Poltz's "Weed, California" story and to his Dhali Lhama ending to "Morning Song". (if anyone hasn't heard any of these stories, and wants to, let me know and we can work something out for tape trading). and hey, have a great day, everyday!!!
