My guess is it is a song about being married to someone who doesn't take it seriously, so the singer wants out ("stop, I want to get off"). I love this song. It has great humor and clever lyrics. I'm disapointed she hasn't done it much since '96. Jewel is saying that parents, in this case the father, are responsible (to a large extent) for their creating children's attitudes and behaviour; they shape their children's being by their own attitudes and behaviour. "I'm messy, what's that say about you [Daddy]?" So, without resistance (which is also expressed in the song) by the child, a racist father can (not will) create a racist child. But it's broader in its application than just racism. It gets back to I'm Sensitive, the other side of the Daddy coin. So, as a parent, I see it as being about the dangers and responsibilities of being a parent and the rightful anger and resentment you can provoke from your children if you don't take care in your own life. A Blue Jewel On another subject. I said in a recent post , musing on what a "Jewel song" was, that Jewel constantly surprised me with all the wonderfully different aspects to her talent. Well, yesterday I got home from work (late - I'd been finishing off the local union newsletter) and Rare Angels 1995 was waiting for me, with so many songs I'd not heard before. And yet another Jewel who just blew my mind! MrBB had said that Jewel loved Ella Fitzgerald and she said on the tape she wanted to be like her, and I read somewhere (probably Mr BB) that Jewel, when she went to Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan, she wanted to learn to sing the blues but was taught opera instead. (I'm not a classical music fan at all, but when I heard Jewel sing Monteverdi's Lasciatemi Morire on FF3 - please note the correct spelling - it was just so beautiful!!. Another Jewel! But I digress.) So I have wondered from time to time why I had never heard Jewel sing a bluesey song. Well, now I have - A Very Big Girl - and she's so, so good!!! This is really my kind of music (though I'm more Bessie Smith, though I love the jazz blues of Ella too). Now to the point: there are still so many songs out there that I haven't heard yet, are there any more bluesey songs among them like A Very Big Girl? I'd love to hear more. And Jewel doing a set of classic Ella Fitzgerald numbers would be so great!! Take care! Her husband is just kind of dull and consumed with his work and stuff. He's no fun anymore, if he ever was. The woman is frustrated, she gets no sex, attention, conversation, or anything of the sort from the man anymore. She's unhappy with the Marital Carnival(or Carousel as is actually a better word, I don't know why Jewel used Carnival, it seems like Carousel is a more accurate term) and she wants it to stop spinning in this circular, repetitive, boring circle, and just get off(sexual double entendre intendded though here I'm sure). It also seems like that towards the end of the song she is contemplating leaving the guy or cheating on him because trying to make it work is pointless and futile, not worth the ffort, why should she fight for someone who doesn't want winning, as she says, who doesn't want to work with her? Dear all the EDA's out there, Being from New Zealand and all, It seems weird the way Jewel started her career. If I put it simply, did she pretty much start off by doing pretty much what "Phoebe" does on Friends every so often in the coffee shop? To me that doesn't sound right, but then coffee shops here don't have big company music managers visiting. If that's how it is, I'd just like to say "Jewel Kilcher, you're brilliant", and "New Zealand coffee shops suck so bad cos I don't know a single one that has a live singer or anything like that. They're planning her appearances at high-profile national spectacles like the Super Bowl, the American Music Awards and the Rosie O'Donnell and Jay Leno shows. At each event, Fonteyne and makeup artist Kevin Aucoin must ensure that Jewel looks- well, like Jewel. Like the title says, it's about a marital carnival. I believe she's just writing about how sometimes marriage is not all smooth and perfect. Not always a happy ending. As in the song, in the end the woman leaves her husband *"You know I'm going to try to find myself a ride, one that doesn't bring me down this time,..."*, because she needs to feel happy, loved, secure. She didn't find that with her husband. Hope it helps a bit...? Shannon the bleeding hearted angel xoxxo On Mon, 23 Mar 1998, WiddleyPud wrote: > Does anyone know the meaning of this song? "when i was with you" and "silver lining" just seem like two songs that really mention their own personalities. also YWMFM seems almost haunting with both of them....i was listenning to the version when they both sing it, i never really got into YWMFM, it seemed too much pop for my taste, but then i heard it with both of them and i just started crying, they are a great duet. but it's sad really, since they once were together and once must have believed that they were meant to be. another thing about YWMFM video; was jewel dating sean penn or something like that when the first one came out and then they threw that one away when they broke up?? i could be way off, i heard that months ago. let me know what you guys think kat imperfect angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Mar 1998 15:44:09 -0600 From: Lara Subject: SJC: Everyday Thoughts (new EDA mailing list) Hello!
