He's right. And although he says in his post that being racist doesn't make someone a bad father and Jewel would obviously disagree with that prob'ly by saying it is these forms of programmed and learned hatreds that are responsible for racism in the first place and that no child is racist until he or she is taught to be such, I can see his point there to an extent to. But the thing about "Daddy" is that Jewel never says that that is what the song is about. She says that that is what inspired the song, there's a difference. It's like the recent "God's Gift to Women" problems that people had with that song. Again, there the story that goes with the song is about what inspired the song, not a detailed description of that which inspired it. Back to "Daddy" though, another key point is that Jewel also mentions that the song deals with what those kids who she met will be like when they grow up, in all probability racists like their father and how that is a horrific and saddening thought to her. It also makes her angry that such dispicable people become parents and their brainwash their children with their own warped and hateful ideologies instead of being brought up to view all people as equals, as Jewel was. Her anger is then harnessed by her artistry and formed into a song about a girl who actively practices the hate and anger she has learned through her father the Klansman and turns it against a more worthy target, her father. It's like she's rubbing it in his face that although she's his creation and his love, he does not control her and she refuses to conform to his racist ways. And in my opinion it is an appropriate outlet for the anger of both the girl in the story and for Jewel herself, if you've ever see her do this song live its scary the bitterness with which she spits out the lyrics of this song. Very powerful and moving. But the main point was just that "Daddy" was inspired by the incident with the dad who didn't let his kids watch blacks on TV, not about that, inspired by it. Number 4: "On parents not listening to what their kids listen to..." After reading this I just laughed. Someone has way too much time on their hands (not the person who originally wrote the email, but the maker of the website) You know, we all do something that we will regret doing some day, and I think that is the type of thing that will be regreted.. Like the emailer said, people are sometimes made to live a shielded life.. The website seemed to be aimed at maybe 9-10 year olds? Younger maybe? (BTW, what age was it directed to?) Why I say this? I remember how people would NEVER say anything bad in like fourth and fifth grade, and they liked music. Now they look back and are like "I can't believe they listen to that" or some weird crap. Anyway, I think most people take no offense to the words "damn" or "hell" And as I look at my younger cousin who is really into the Spice Girls right now, she is only listening to them because it's the "cool" thing to listen to. And I really love Jewel and Paula Cole and Alanis Morissette, and listen to them on the bus to school each day, usually (alternating other CDs in) and people just look at me strangely like "You actually like that stuff" and I stand behind what I listen to. . . (I hate riding the bus with little 6th and 7th graders) *shudder* Anyway, they are only into music that is popular, like if I brought in like I dunno a Puffy CD or something, they'd be like "That CDs awsome" when they haven't even heard any songs besides that one he sung at one of the awards shows or something.. Um...forgot my point for a sec...OH! (L) Sorry.. Because their parents won't let them get the CD. They never listen to the lyrics to any of their songs. I didn't really like Paula Cole either, but had her CD as like a featured selection I forgot to respond to at BMG, and I recently saw her on MTV Live I think, and I had closed caption on and was reading some of the words to her songs, and it just clicked how some of her songs in fact suck, but I still could find meaning to them. (Believe me, Where Have All the Cowboys Gone has more meaning than y'think) Here I am sidetracked again, and most probably won't read this, so if ya follow what I'm saying, reply, and I'll try to explain further.. This email was probably very very confusing... If I reread it, I wouldn't understand it (L) Take Care, The Agnostic Angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Mar 1998 17:16:46 EST From: Z BUDDY 13 Subject: innocence maintained does anyone know the tabs for "Innocence Maintained" and "everything breaks sometime", or "Tiny Love Spaces" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Mar 1998 19:33:02 -0500 From: arrmagon@bellsouth.net Subject: save the linoleum Does anyone knw where i can get a copy of save the linoleum or shiva diva doo wop? My take on it is about how we, as children, become what we see, or told (as Jewel so often says). And I think that idea is very relevant in the song. She says at the end of the song, "I'm sloppy, what's that say about you? I'm messy, what's that say about you?", and earlier in the song she says, "I'm your creation, I'm your love daddy." What she's really saying is, "You created me and I'm sloppy and messy. So what does that make you, the man who created me?" But I'm having trouble getting my thoughts together so I could be totally wrong. I'd love to hear all your opinions though. Something to do while Jewel is kind of inactive. "i guess tonight we are just friends again" was the statement that i used for my ex all the time. listenning to the song i feel like this chick is in this marriage that sometimes is great, and she's completely in love with this guy, but it's just gone dull. and it's like a carnival. "i hope your meetings our filled with lots of good meet" is sort of saracastic. like "look at me!!! i'm your wife love me!!!" but she feels like she's not getting the love. kat imperfect angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #183 ***************************
