Either there should be a list for Steve all by himself, or when someone posts a Steve e-mail to the list, just make sure that that's clear in the Subject, so that those who don't want to read Steve news don't have to read it without worrying that they're missing Jewel stuff. Make sense?? We did this on another list that I was on, and it worked out really well. Amy The Theatre Angel :-P ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 02:54:08 -0500 (EST) From: Joseph Chou Subject: for all the newbies ... (who is this steve poltz anyways?) Hi, everyone, I don't mean to flame anybody but I think there's something that everyone (especially the newbies) should know ... there is this unwritten (as far as I know) rule for newsgroups and mailing lists, which basically says you should read for at least a few weeks before you post. this is just basic courtesy. like any group/organization, you have to get to know the atomsphere, the people and the history first before you voice your opinions ... I mean you can't just publish something without studying the reference literature first. if you do, people will just ignore you. for the internet, the quintessential references are the FAQs (frequently asked questions). MAKE SURE you read the FAQs BEFORE posting in any forum. in our case, if you read the FAQ you'll know where to sign up to become an "official" EDA :), who Steve Poltz is, and why people discuss him here. once again, READ THE FAQ ... IT'S GOOD FOR YOU! :) Joseph ------------------------------ Date: 22 Mar 98 01:21:00 -0800 From: "Todd Safra" Subject: SJC: Impala moment Ok, this is one of those ironic moments in life. I'm listening to the new Steve Poltz album for the second time, and I'm listening to the Impala track. I come to the realization (or recognition) that he is talking about an old Chevy? Impala, and I think to myself, gee, I know the name, but I have no idea what one looks like. As I pause for half a second and look to my right while stopped at this light, there sits an Impala next to me? Weird eh? Seems I've been having a lot of moments since I joined this list... Addendum: When I bought the album at tower records the day before, the guy at the register looks at the disc and say "Great Album". I ask him if he knows Steve P. will be in town in 2 weeks and he starts writing down the dates and tells me how he met Steve awhile ago when he was still dating Jewel, and she popped in and gave him free ticket for the front row. Talk about being at the right place at the right time! Thanks! - -Jenny, The Angel With Silver Lining ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 15:19:46 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: From the Jewel list owner: The Steve Poltz content of late Hey folks :-) About the latest on list debate over the recent Steve Poltz content on this list.... First off, only about 2/3 of the Poltz posts submitted have made it through to the list. For the most part (with some exceptions), the only ones going through were ones that mentioned or alluded to Jewel, and/or involved list member gatherings/get-togethers at shows on Steve's present tour. This list is not just a Jewel list, over the years it's certainly evolved into a "list member"/EDA list also, where we've had more than a few get-togethers, with 50 to 60 EDAs not an uncommon number. If you've read some of the explanatory posts from others on this (Steve Poltz), you all should know these facts: 1) Not much Jewel-stuff to talk about right now, certainly not much new stuff. She's not touring, not doing any TV shows, because she's on location filming a movie. 2) Steve may very well be the #1 main reason most of us have ever even heard of Jewel. (other than her mom & pop) He took her under his wing when she was struggling and ready to give the singing up, has co-written more than a few songs with her, was her boyfriend for a spell, is still best-of-friends with her, was in her You Were Meant For Me video, has appeared on more than a few TV shows with her, she's on his CD....basically, he's a large part of Jewel. Steve's band (the Rugburns) went out on tour with Jewel a year ago right now and you could *easily* see that they all were having a blast and there was even talk on this list then about "it looks like they may be back together again", as Jewel and Steve seemed *very* close on that tour. It's just that they are evidently still best of friends. This is a critical and exciting part of Steve's solo career. There is absolutely no question in my mind that Jewel would be very pleased that talk of Steve (keep in mind what kind of "Poltz posts" have been getting through to the list), his tour and his new CD are a part of this list....her list right now. (Not to mention his upcoming Living Room Tour across the USA and Canada, in list members homes and backyards :-) Since the list went into full moderation last fall, the number of daily posts on this list has almost halved. Newer folks here who think the 40 to 50 daily posts (at times) seems a bit much might be surprised to learn that we were in the 90 to 125 posts per day range last spring, summer and early fall. Now with us at a relatively comfortable number of daily posts, I know for a fact that *most* list members can at least physically/software-wise handle the daily number of posts coming through, as the number of bounced emails coming back to smoe.org due to full email inboxes has diminished greatly. I used to get anywhere from 300 to 1000 daily bounces (at it's peak it was 3500), now it's more like 30 to 70 bounces a day. If you can't handle the number of posts you get a day from this list, *please* consider switching to Jewel-digest and Jewel-news. You can write me for more info on these versions and/or send an email to eda-info@smoe.org and/or I can send you a sample digest or two to see what it is like. The digest(s) contains all the daily list mail, you just get in it 2 or 3 larger posts per day, rather than the 30 to 60 individual emails a day. Back to the Poltz issue. So, if you don't want to read about Steve, most of the posts about him have mentioned him or the title of his CD in the subject. Therefore, use the good ol' delete button, that's what it is there for. You can't tell me you don't have the time....there's not *that* many posts from this list a day. If you don't have the few minutes needed daily to delete any/all posts you don't care about (based on the subject or *brief* reads), then it's likely that this list really isn't the problem. One other thing that will help a lot in HELPING EACH OTHER on this list, is simply to PLEASE choose a subject for your post that best reflects what your post is about. If it has no Jewel content whatsoever, please use the acronym NJC leading off the subject.....SJC (some Jewel content) can be used also...use your best judgement on choosing an acronym if it's needed. JC is not needed, as the previous list owner correctly decided all posts SHOULD be considered JC (Jewel content) unless otherwise specified...we can't have too many acronyms...it'll get confusing. As part of my job as list owner and moderator, although I already have been doing so to some extent, I will more so add in NJC or SJC to a subject of a submitted post when I think it's needed. (If I remember :-) One last thing...the use of "NJC" is not a license to post anything you want. As I said, this is a Jewel list and an EDA/list member list. (You'll see more evidence of this being a list member list as the summer approaches...EDA gatherings, Living Room Tours etc). Please try to remain somewhat on topic or at least on a tangent to what this list is all about. (I know this may be vague and I am sorry, but I don't really have the time to cover everything right now) Please feel free to respond back to me and ask any questions or make any points/arguments, but please give me up to a week or so to reply :-) Mike - Jewel list owner :-) P.S. Many of you will get two or more copies of this post due to the way Jewel-announce@smoe.org, Jewel@smoe.org and Jewel-digest works * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 14:39:52 EST From: DCSKIM Subject: NJC: jcard ?
