"impala" ... steve+jewel "i thought i saw you last night" ... steve + jewel "old lover's house" ... steve + jewel etc. an interesting transcript ... summarized from memory. steve talking: "so i break down in weed, oregon with 7 dollars in my pocket and the mechanic says it'll cost 150 dollars to get 'so-and-so' fixed. then i hear from the radio 'and that was jewel with you were meant for me, knocking the macarena off the charts as the number one single, etc' ... and i wonder 'why the !uck' don't i have any money? and suddenly i remember how publishing works. i just earned 6 and 3/4 cents. Charge it!" so that's ywmfm from steve's perspective. if you'd like a realaudio version of ywmfm and the entwined story (from above), say so and i'll encode it. pv/Austin __________________________ Austin H. Many of these songs are simply co-written & publishing royalties are shared by both writers. I know Steve has written some great songs in collaboration with Jewel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lisa Sanders, Elizabeth Hummel, Gregory Page & many others. He's the only songwriter I can think of thats more prolific than Jewel. I know his songwriting catalogue is huge. And thats not even considering the hundreds of spontaneously improvised tunes he's banged out live. One of my favorite Jewel show memories is from the Gym at Alumni Hall in Providence last year. At the end of the night about 15 EDAs were standing around & Steve & Atz Kilcher (Jewel's Dad) did a spontaneously improvised song about all of us standing around. All the while alternating improvised lines! Hilarious & amazing simultaneously! :-) MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Mar 1998 18:35:39 -0600 (CST) From: Carole Bellamy Subject: Re: JEWEL CDS or RECORDINGS Hi EDAs! This is Randall from the Netherlands! Did anyone else attend Jewel's concert at the 'JOINT' inside the Hard Rock Cafe and Casino in Las Vegas this past New Years EVE, since I missed her Amsterdam show it was a must see! The show was full of surprises(tickets PRICES were between $75-$150) I won my excellent $150 seat playing poker. Steve Polzt was playing Blackjack during the early part of the evening and was doing quite well! Does anyone know if Jewel will be featured on The Hard Rock's $5 dollar casino chip? When I was there a 'pit boss' told me that they were speaking with Jewel's management about the possibility?? Anyhow the concert was awesome Flea showed up during Jewels second set and jammed for a couple of songs, and of Course the Rugburns opened the venue! Does anyone have any Angle food from this show? Does anyone know if Jewel had the oppertunity to meet are play with Jerry Garcia before he so suddenly passed away? Does she even like the Greatful Dead? I'm sure if pappa bear was still around that he would have taken jewel under his wing! It would have been awesome if they could have made a deuet! Well, I made a kind trade, the day of the Jewel concert! A signed Greatful Dead album for a beautifully signed( in sky blue marker)Guitar! Does any one else have any cool stuff signed by Jewel! I was also lucky enough to get a Drum head signed by Jewel, Shara and Lisa Loeb at the Lilith Fest at the Gorge in Washington! Just one suggestion, perhaps, Jewel's management should consider developing a Hotline "similar to what the Greatful Dead had for so many years'. Perhaps, even selling tickets by mail; believe it or not folks, the EDA family has the potential of growing even larger than the extended deadhead family?? Feedback is always welcome! Hi Angels! I was interested in the post that quoted Entertainment Weekly: "Jewel doesn't do much to "You make loving fun" beyond making it sound like a Jewel song (not necessarily a compliment)." Now, the writer of these words obviously has some stereotype of what a "Jewel song' is in his/her head and doesn't like it. Jewel does rub some people up the wrong way with her plain speaking/singing. on issues like prejudice. And this is a case of sheer prejudice against Jewel. But I'm not interested in bigots: their views are usually based on ignorance and stupidity. What interests me is the notion of a "Jewel song". What is a "Jewel song"? Is there in fact such a thing? Of course, any song Jewel sings is recognisably "Jewel". But that's her voice. Is there something else in a song - style, way of singing, theme, words, or whatever - that makes a song clearly recognisable as a "Jewel song"? What impresses me as a measure of Jewel's incredible talent is how every new song I hear strikes me as different. She is just so versatile. I don't think you can pin down a song and say "That is a Jewel song". She can even present the same song is vastly different ways. I've now heard FG in two versions and one is a very angry song and the other isn't. Which is the "real" Jewel song. Both , and neither. Is Daddy more of a "Jewel song" than Morning Song or Rocker Girl or Carnivore? Jewel is too rich and creative to be tied down to a stereotype. If she sang the same style of song every time, it would be boring and forgettable. And Jewel is never boring and certainly unforgettable. The reason given for the new album being completely rerecorded - she has moved on musically from the material she recorded, what, a year ago - is further evidence of this. She herself sees her music now as different from what it was a year ago. [As a bit of a historian, I'd love it if the already recorded tracks were issued for archival purposes, so everyone could see her musical development. But I quite understand and accept her reasons for doing a whole new album from scratch.] So there is no such thing as a "Jewel song". She's far better than that. But, then again, every song I've heard her sing has "Jewel" imprinted on it. Is there, then, some indefinable essence of Jewel? Sorry for rambling on (but it's an old man's prerogative). Last week, she was at 68th. She has been on the chart for 109 weeks!! Wow, thats a long time. She has been on the chart longer than anyone!!!! the closest person to her is Celine Dions Falling into you album, with 105. Also, Celine Dion is lower on the chart than her at 84. So i would say Jewels album is doing very very well!!! And apparently it still is.!!!! Go Jewel!!!!! Ok, thats all for now, bye. ~Lesley ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #174 ***************************
