For a while I've been wanting to learn guitar, mostly because I'm not finding piano as fun as I anticipated :) And now that I have a little more free time, I want to start. I had planned on buying a used one, but I went guitar-shopping anyway and found a Lotus acoustic for $140 ( reduced from $230 or something ). Now, I know next to nothing about guitar brands/models. This sounds like an awesome price, but is Lotus reliable? It's not like I need a performance-quality instrument or anything, but I don't want the Packard Bell of guitars either ;o) One other question: I heard that Jewel would be on a rerun of Letterman this week. Does anyone know if it's near the beginning or the end of the show? Thanks a lot! "I get knocked down, but I get up again. Hi Angels, Jewel is now big business and entrepreneurs are wanting to cash in on her popularity. We've seen the kids' books. The Jewel Store on the web has t-shirts, posters and other Jewellery. So I'm not surprised there is now going to be a doll. It's all part of the commercializing of Jewel. Now my instincts dislike the commercializing of anything, but I've bought my share of Jewellery (though I doubt if I'll be getting the doll) and without the promotion of Jewel as a product I would never have heard her here in Australia, and that would have been an incalculable loss to me! If the doll and other products get some people to really listen to Jewel, to what she has to say as well as the beautiful voice, then it's OK with me. Hello everyone I found this article in a Toronto based entertainment newspaper "EYE" "What Does Jewel Smell Like?" by: Marc Weisblot Steve Poltz is his name and unlayering lingerie off Jewel is his game. The co-writer of "YWMFM" who became the pneumatics one's bleary-eyed costar in the super hit version of her video, has steppped out with an engaging disc of his own, "One Left Shoe" (Mercry/Polygram). It doesn't hold back in a late 60's Warner Seven Arts sort way - a few breathtaking nuggets suurounded by plaintive acoustic ramblers. Born in Halifax, based in San Diego, where he spent a decade toiling as frontman for the Rugburns, Poltz was in Pittsburgh when we reached him, plinking his guitar after the previous night's gig in Cleveland. All his hustling made him turn down a ticket to the Grammy Awards, where he swears he would've surely tackled that "Soy Bomb" guy into submission. Q: Have you ever been recognized from the Jewel video? SP: Well right after making it I shaved my head for that exact reason. A few months later, though, I was at a San Diego Chargers game, and y'know how they cut off beer sales after the third quarter? I'm rushing to the concession stand with everyone else and some guy screams, "Hey that's the fella from the Jewel video! Will you sign my wife's bra?" Turns out she had a dark bra on and all I had was a dark pen, so I signed her shoulder. Q: She'll never wash that shoulder again. SP: I hope not. I signed it "Dennis DeYoung." Q: How would you describe the part in the Jewel video? SP: I dunno, but a friend from Alaska called me after seeing it and said "Dude you look like a heroin casualty" The wrestling coach from my high school said it was "pornographic" Q: But it can't be any more pornographic than those high school wrestling matches, right? Tell me, then, what does Jewel smell like? SP: She smells um... she smells lovely. Q: Oh c'mon Steve, is that the best you can do? SP: OK, whatever the best thing in the world smells like - for me, that's a cold pint of Guinness stout - she smells better. Like a peach tree on a hot summer's day. Is that good? ................................ that's all the Jewel contents in the article. If anyone wants the rest of the interview with Steve, mail me privately. buh - bye Wojtek Kowalewski Electrical Engineer Ryerson Polytechnic University, Toronto ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Mar 98 11:08:32 Pacific Daylight Time From: Bill "Wizard" Downey Subject: Jewel Dolls JEWEL DOLLS???? What are these greedy, capitalist pigs thinking ? (I suppose I just answered my own question.) I would be personally insulted if these things are produced. Jewels poetry touches my soul in a place most poets can't reach. Creating this graven image (I don't think that's too harsh) would, in my opinion, diminish in some intangible way how I feel about this magnificent artist. It would reduce a brilliant artist who's music adds beautiful substance to our Universe, to nothing more than a cheap marketing ploy to cash in on the recent popularity of female singers. I don't seem to recall a Bob Dylan doll. Is she being devoured by the Great Beast of Corporate Amerika (spelling intentional)? Will we be lost like pigs in the wilderness, doomed to view her visage in Pepsi ads, action figures (w/Real Kung-Fu Grip!), Jewel designer clothes, Jewel-Brand makeup, et. al., ad nauseam? "This may be the generation that will face Armageddon, the end of the world." Ronald Reagan On a less psychotic note, my stash of Angelfood is minimal. I have PoY, PoY-Vinyl, and part of the Paradise Theater show, Boston Spring 1996. As a new EDA (although I have been one in spirit since December 95 when I first heard Jewel), I'm not exactly certain of the protocol for obtaining this. I would appreciate any assistance in obtaining anything/everything available. I would stab an old lady in the back (metaphorically) to get a tape of my first show at Metro, Chicago, April 10 (?) 1996. P.S. "greedy capitalist pigs" wasn't a reference to EDA's who like the doll idea, I meant the Corporation producing them. "Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!" J. Garcia/R. That it's a bad idea, and just another way for Atlantic Records and some toy company trying to make more money. They are trying to cash in on her popularity, not trying to promote her voice or her mind, but on her body and face. ~Amy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Mar 1998 10:47:28 -0700 (MST) From: Charlie Watkins Subject: Re: The jewel "newsgroup".. As a bit of a collector of live performances by all my favorite artists, Jewel included, one occasionally runs into a show that just doesn't seem to be out there anywhere on tape, although you know it prob'ly is 'cause odds are someone taped it. For me and my search for Jewel's best live shows, that song is "House of the Rising Sun." Now I'm sure many of you have heard this song, it is a clasic rock staple made famous by The Animals. It also appears on Bob Dylan's debut album. During her first headlining tour, also her first tour that was with a band and not completely solo acoustic, Jewel performed this song, once or twice at most. Reviews of the shows at which she performed it are astounding if you look back at the old digests. Only "Nicotine Love" has had equally impassioned responses and supposedly Jewel's version of "House of the Rising Sun" is just insane, absoultely sick, just awesome beyond belief, one of her finest moments as a performer. Yet, somehow I can't find a tape of her doing this song and have been unable to do so for quite some time now. The only concrete example I have is the 5/12/96 show at a venue called The Intersection in Grand Rapids, Michigan. From the small amount of reviews I was able to cull together I found that "House of the Rising Sun" was played at this show along with a lot of other rarities. And I also found an accurate, if out of order, setlist. The apparent quality of the performance at this show is perhaps only rivaled on that early summer 96 tour by her outstanding set at Tradewinds in Sea Bright, NJ on 5/21. Here is the set for those who care to help search for one of Jewel's all-time greatest show. Behind the Wall Little Sister Near You Always Daddy Louisa and her Blue Guitar Kiss Your Ass Sometimes it be That Way The Raven She Cries *Marital Carnival *Carnivore(old lyrics) *Morning Song *You Were Meant For Me *Love Me Just Leave Me Alone *House of the Rising Sun *Foolish Games 1,000 Miles Away Money Pieces of You Angel Standing By I'm Sensitive(improvisationed lyrics) *Who Will Save Your Soul Chime Bells Amen *=with band So you see, "House of the Rising Sun" is one of a slew of rarities at this show, many which hadn't been played or were only played sparingly, since the Innerchange days. So if anyone out there has a copy of this tape or knows where one can be found, Please Please Please email me. Thank you. Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 22:23:18 -0500 From: Dan Stark Subject: NJC: Toronto Steve Poltz shows and articles Hi, I just got back from Toronto, where I attended the Canadian Music Week festivities over the weekend, which included two shows by Steve Poltz. Friday's show was at a small top-floor club called Holy Joe's. The place was packed, meaning there were probably 100 people at the most jammed into this tiny room. In the audience were many music industry execs, as well as Kim Stockwood, a Canadian country-pop singer whose music I quite like. Steve charmed the audience with about a 45-minute set of songs, almost all of which seemed to be from the forthcoming CD except for his version of You Were Meant For Me. The energy level was pretty laid back, which suited the intimate setting, and the crowd listened quietly except when laughing at his lyrics or stories. Saturday's show was at the small C'est What club, which is well-known among EDA's as one of Jewel's early hot spots where much of Rare Angels was taped. Steve would mention during his set how it was great to be playing there. The night started with two female-fronted acoustic acts who both strained to be heard by an uninterested sold-out audience of maybe 250, most of whom were there to see ex-Supertramp leader Roger Hodgeson later that night. Next up was Steve's performance. To be honest, I had debated whether to see him since I expected a repeat performance of Friday's show and the festival featured lots of other great performers playing other venues at the same time, but my friends convinced me to stay. It turned out to be an excellent choice because Steve performed an almost completely different setlist with new and different stories between the songs. This one was a little higher energy than Friday's show and included some Rugburns material. Steve instantly won over the preoccupied crowd, and the place became electric as he drew them into some enthusiastic audience participation. The response was so good that Steve nearly lost it, laughing himself at the reaction to his Rugburns song "Tree Hugger." He cracked several Canadian jokes as he talked about moving to California from his home in Halifax, NS at a young age, saying he never learned about such Canadian staples as hockey or the metric system as a result. The combination of a bigger, more responsive crowd and a somewhat higher energy setlist made this a much better show than Friday's. Spotted in the crowd, besides more music execs and Supertramp fans, was Blue Rodeo guitarist Greg Keelor. Steve was also scheduled to do a show at The Horseshoe Tavern earlier in the week, but that was cancelled, apparently because he was doing the video shoot for Silver Lining the same day. Besides being on the bill with Hodgeson (whom I missed), a lot of credit for the interest can go to Toronto's two weekly entertainment street papers, "Now" and "Eye." Both published feature articles about Steve in last Thursday's issues to correspond with Canadian Music Week, and they each took quite different angles. Unfortunately, Now's informative article is not published on their web site, but you can read the Eye Weekly article until this Thursday March 12th, when the new issue will replace it. The current issue is at: http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/eye_magazine.html - - click on MUSIC and then the Steve Poltz article. After that, it might be archived in a back issue on Eye's main page at: http://www.eye.net . Dan ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #160 ***************************
