I think its a good idea, but everthing has its good and its bad. The good would be for the Jewel unoffical fan club(us, EDAs) to get advance tickets for a venue. That way, when the ticket sales are opened to everybody else we don't have to scramble to get 'em cause we already got 'em. The bad would be that there would be too many EDAs getting tickets before the public gets a change to get theirs(sound a bit selfish, huh?). Another bad side is that ticket scalpers could get some advance tickets and jack up the price to an unbelievible number making it so the people who set up the venue are being riped off. I personnally haven't gotten the chance to get advance tickets. Who at the box office is going to take the time and check for who is/who isn't on this mailing list? Sounds kinda like you've got to do it on the honor system. Yeah, it's true, anyone can type subscribe and be on this list, and become a "fan", but the info for a fan club can be placed in the liner notes of the CD. That's how Pearl Jam did it before the web was such a booming thing. (Yes kids, there was a time when no one knew what the heck the web was ). PJ sends a newsletter 4 times a year, and the most recent letter has a ticket ordering form enclosed, limit 2 tickets to any US concert. But there is no fan club only section, you still have to hang with everyone else, but what's wrong with that!! And yes, there are fan club only shows, but only for those living in the area. Should someone look into this. Perhaps give fan club/mailing list members first pick at shows? How about mini-shows for fans in a certain area? How about a fan club? I'd plop down $5-10 for newsletters and a dibs at concerts!!! - -Steve (the taping angel) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 16:42:20 +1100 From: blh301@coombs.anu.edu.au (Barry Howarth) Subject: Jewel songs and me Hi Angels, << >what jewel song reminds you most of yourself??? > >and > >what jewel song do you relate to the most??? >> To take the secon first, it's hard because I feel I relate to all Jewel's songs. They all move me, if in different ways. But there are some that are special to me (at the moment, because every new Jewel song I hear is a revelation!). About the end of June last year it was the 13th anniversary of my wife walking out and leaving me to bring up our two kids. They've both grown up and left home now. Anyway, the TV was on and there was a music video program on and I heard this beautiful voice sing "I got my eggs And my pancakes too I got my maple syrup Everything but you". ( My ex-wife is from Miami and had introduced me to pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, which wasn't common in Australia 20 years ago.) Then this beautiful girl in blue sang "Dreams last for so long, even after you're gone" - 13 years! I was captivated, but had to wait another week to hear the song again and find out who the singer was. Then the song seemed to haunt me, follow me everywhere - in shops, everywhere it seemed. Then I told my 18 year old daughter about it and she said, "Oh yeah, Jewel is great!" So I bought the POY album for her 19th birthday at the end of July and listened to the record with her to see if the other songs were as good as YWMFM. On hearing "Pieces of You" I knew this woman was really special. Not only did she sing beautifully and look stunning but the words she wrote had something important to say - about being caring and considerate of others and yourself. So YWMFM is still very special. But the song that brings tears to my eyes most often these days is Emily. In diferent moods, Morning Song and Cold Song are great, and Under the Water is just so perceptive! And all the others . . .!! As for , that's hard. But I suppose Angel Needs A Ride comes close. I recently started a webpage, and I'm in the process of adding a section with Jewel quotes. The only problem is that I can't really find a whole lot of them. If you could all privately e-mail me with interesting Jewel quotes that you have found in interviews, magiznes, etc.., I would greatly appreciate it. It would also be great if you could verify that Jewel actually said these quotes, so please do so if you can because I don't feel like qetting in trouble for making up what Jewel said. It's just a matter of letting her know. After all, we also got her a star for her birthday and we've done a lot to help other San Diego artists out (The Living Room Tour) I feel the least anyone could do (even though we don't necessarily want anyone to commend us since the smiles of the people we helped do just that) is to give us early ability to purchase Jewel concert tickets. It's not even that much to ask. ANother argument.. My two cents on the mail ordering of tickets is : GREAT IDEA! >> The bad thing would be that there would be too >>many EDAs getting tickets before the public gets a change to get >>theirs(sound a bit selfish, huh?). Another bad side is that ticket scalpers >>could get some advance tickets and jack up the price to an unbelievible >>number making it so the people who set up the venue are being riped off. I don't buy that. First off, the Grateful Dead did mail order without creating mayhem and scalpers running around trying to jack up the price of tickets (at least no more than any other concert on the planet). Mail Ordering tickets is just an alternative lottery than standing in line for hours and getting taken on services charges by ticket master (services charges are one of the reasons that Pearl Jam actually does mail orders, as result of their vocal combat against Ticketmaster). The most difficult part of doing mail order is having the infrastructure to handle the whole process. I happened to look up the "Standard" for the way the that Grateful Dead Ticket Sales (GDTS) handles the ordering of tickets and noticed that they actually offer their service for others: We Can Sell Your Tickets, Too! If you have an event coming up and would like GDTS TOO, Inc. to handle the ticket sales, then please call us at (415) 457-4387. Any events that are sold through GDTS TOO will be mentioned on both the East and West coast Grateful Dead. hotlines as well as on the GDTS TOO Home Page. Interesting!
