Hello everyone, Just a quick question for anyone who can answer it for me. A while back, I remember reading a biography about Jewel that was part of the Official Site, off of the Herstory page... It was titled something like "She stands in wonder" and I'm sure some of you remember it. What I'm trying to find out now though is if that is still on any other site as it no longer seems to be there. I really loved that story, and thought it was wonderfully well writen. I just put a short segment about Jewel on my homepage, and would like to link to that if possible. Anyhow, thanks for your time and help... :) "Your life becomes what you believe" -Jewel Make your life extraordinary! I guess that's what Jewel does and it's not > considered illegal or anything. Sampling is when you use another aritist recording, in whole or part, and incorporate that in your recording. That is, you actully take a sample from their CD, or whatever. As far as I know, Jewel has never done this. What whe has done is use lines from other artist and I can only give one example of this. A the end of God's Gift to Women Jewel sing "You're so vain you probably think this song is about you." This is a line from "You're So Vain"(?) by Carly Simon. This can be considered a homage or literary reference. Another point I'd like to make is that the remake of a song can be done without the owners permission, as long as royalties are paid. Sampling a part of a song (or the whole thing, ala Puff Daddy) requires the permission of the original artists. An example is when Michael Jackson bought the rights to many of the Beatles songs and then allowed Nike to use the original recording of "Revolution". The Beatles sued saying he had the right to the song but not the recording. On a personal note I'd like to say that I hate sampling. The other day on the radio I heard the bass intro to "Walk on the Wild Side", one of my favorite songs ever (it even says 'Hey, Jewel, walk on the wild side'). My ears were then assulted by some rap singer instead of Lou Reed. I am especially wondering if anyone from Britain (where I live)has any cuz I think that all the shipping/handling costs are too complicated for a 16 year old to handle!!! However, if anyone can help me from ANYWHERE in the world then please get in touch by e-mailing me personally. I'll pay whatever you guys charge cuz I luv Jewel so much. We hear very little of her here in the U.K. We haven't even had Foolish Games released here yet!!!! Anyway, I'll sign off. Please ANYONE get in touch with me. It's really a great book with a lot of color photos, some of them I haven't seen before. There's one of her at Interlochen, a picture of her with Sean Penn (not the one on the internet), and one of her with Michel. There's a section that explains the meanings and stories behind each of the songs on POY, all from Jewel's point of view. The EDAs begin to get mentioned on pg. 33. The whole Chapter 7 is all about us. About Jewelstock, the James ?(something...sorry, my memory is bad) foundation, the blood drive, Jewel's official star, the EDAF, etc... Dennis Harris is quoted on pg. 36 talking about the earlier days of the list: "'We became very close friends,' says Dennis Harris. 'Someone once posted to the list that we started out as fans of Jewel, and became fans of each other.' The forty-year-old from Massachusetts explained taht he first saw Jewel in The Wizard of Oz, and then became interested in her music. He liked what Jewel had to say. 'She has a great head on her shoulders, and her message is one of hope and inspiration.'" Pretty cool... :) And then there's a part where Dennis talks about the EDAF: "Harris stresses that the foundation is not a fan club. 'The Everyday Angels Foundation goes beyond Jewel and her music,' he says. The foundation hopes to support worthy causes all over the country through extensive volunteer programs. 'We want to make people aware teh we are indeed each other's everyday angel.'" There's an entire chapter devoted to just Jewel quotes from different press magazines, most of which we've probably all heard already. They're so good and honest that reading them again seems like you're reading it for the first time. Then the book gets more cooler as they start talking about Jewel's atrological signs. On pg. 58, it says that the Gemini's motto (Jewel's sign) is "I Can Do Anything." Well, I can't argue with taht considering her acting goals and her goal to write an autobiography. The very end of the book is a Jewel glossary. :) In the "G" section, it says that Georgia named May 23rd (Jewel's birthday) as Everyday Angel Day. :) Well, that's about it. The bookstore said that this book's publishing date was April of '98. It's very new, and they still didn't have it out on the shelves. I had to ask them to get it from the backroom. So, what's been happening with the EDAF lately? I haven't heard anything from it in a while... One more good news. I got another reply from a different poetry publishing Co. that wants to publish another one of my poems. Whohoo! :) One last month and another this month. :) Again, all Jewel-inspired, of course. :) The Distant Angel :) __________________________________________________________________ (` + + | _ +| Inside my heart there's an empty room. _)|)(||`|<_\ +| It's waiting for lightning; it's waiting for you. + | mark + + | -=Jewel "Absence of Fear"=- __________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 1998 10:15:37 EST From: AMYSUE@aol.com Subject: Re: Question on Singles As far as I know, the following Jewel import singles are available: You Were Meant For Me with--The Cold Song and Rocker Girl Who WIll Save Your Soul with-Pieces of You and Emily (Crossing Guard soundtrack) Foolish Games with--Angel Needs A Ride and Everything Breaks I've been looking hard for other singles.
