Johnson" Subject: article on fans and fanaticism (really long) Today (Sunday), I went back to my parents' house to do laundry and get some forms filled out. While waiting for my white load to get done drying, I decided to thumb through the local paper. Anyways, I found an interesting article on fans, fanaticism, and such. I'll post most of it because I think it kind of fits this group (well, it fits me, but I'll let you decide). I'd be interested to hear others opinions of this, either on the list or privately. Here it is: ================================== "Fans stick with idols through thick, thin" Article in Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier (Iowa), 2/22/98 written by Scott Cawelti, a freelance writer from Cedar Falls Back in early adolescence I woke up one morning to discover I had become a fan. I hadn't really ever been a fan before, but there I was, a devoted, uncritical admirer of someone who could do no wrong. I had suddenly joined legions of people who lose themselves in some object of devotion, who can't get enough of them, and who run the risk of becoming seriously unbalanced. They sometimes overdose on their object of devotion, or more succintly, they OD on their OD. And who was my OD? Of course, she was about my age, and a total beauty, or so I thought. I dreamed about her, drew pictures of her, fantasized about talking to her, and someday even holding her hand. I wish I could remember her name. Then I saw her with some other guy (lucky jerk) and my fanhood faded. Within 24 hours I noticed another similar beauty, and off I went again, smitten. {transcriber's note: I know this part describes a slightly different type of admiration than what the EDAs have for Jewel, but some of the ideas are the same} Sooner or later I learned a few things about becoming a fan, and how silly it is. And how essential. I'm still a fan of a few people, and contend that nothing smooths a bumpy road better than a few loyal fans. What is a guardian angel, after all, but a spiritual fan? ~a few paragraphs on how a good marriage is actually mutual fanhood~ Fanhood also can make careers. People occasionaly ask how they can become full-time writers, eventually making real cash from the safety and comfort of their own keyboards. "Create fans, first, if you can," I tell them. "Everything else will fall into place." That's how Robert James Waller did it. Through his many essays the the {Des Moines} Register, he created legions of Iowa fans. Some of them happened to run university presses. One of them happily sent Waller's manuscript off to New York with a cover letter, saying, in effect, "Take this one seriously -- we love him out here." The manuscript? 'Bridges of Madison County', which eventually created millions of fans worldwide. {similar to Jewel, the Innerchange, and 'Pieces of You'} So fans come first; then fame, then more fans. Now this is not to it can't all turn sour. Fans can be fickle, and a few wrong moves, some bad publicity, too many weak sequels often turns hordes of fans into cadres of critics. Nevertheless, we can't help but be deeply affected by those we admire, and fall into fanhood in spite of ourselves. If we happen to live in America, we even form fanclubs. These days, there are thousands of such clubs on the Internet, and they talk daily among themselves, passing around news and gossip about their object of devotion, speculating on what he/she's up to. I recently joined an Internet group devoted to Iowa singer/songwriter/poet Greg Brown. Years ago he became known as the writer of Iowa's unofficial state song, 'The Iowa Waltz'. He now appears regularly on 'Prarie Home Companion', and with 13 CDs out and a full concert schedule, makes a solid living as a performer. Curious about what made all those fans so taken by Brown, I threw out this question: "When did you become a fan?" A dozen or so devotees replied, and their answers entertained us all for several days. They also provided insights into fanhood. It's instantaneous, they all said: Fan at first sight. They heard one or two songs, and knew immediately they wanted to hear more. Soon, they couldn't get enough. Becoming a real fan can be life-changing, and most testified to that: "(His) music must have wormed deep into my heart, and it's there ALL THE TIME...I'm just as hooked on Greg's music now as those fish on my Jitterbug (lure) then. Every time I play his music, my troubles recede into the future and I'm a kid again, with the whole damn world in front of me." That's why people become fans: Whenever they experience their object of devotion, it affects them deeply. If fans become fanatics, of course, they become dangerous. As fanatics, they worship their ODs as minor gods and follow anywhere, even unto death. In effect, they form micro-religions and descend into cult madness. However, feeling passionately affectionate about someone's accomplishments, and/or their artistic output, and taking their flaws lightly seems healthy to me. Just as long as one's OD doesn't betray or abuse fans, he/she can get by with a few lapses, including adultery and shading the truth. So, does Bill Clinton still have fans out there? Yes, with Hillary being among the most devoted. And will they stay with him through thick and thin? They already have. ========================= Now I don't know about you, but it totally surprised me when he tied it in with Clinton. I don't want to start an debate on the president on this list (I'm not saying anything for or against him, but I feel it is an argument best carried out on some other medium than this list). But I do feel that Mr. Cawelti did raise some interesting issues on the subject. (well, at least in my case. Maybe I am just wierd :o) ) I have, in the past called myself a "Jewel fanatic", but I did not mean it in the definition that was given in this article (the cult-like one). We should respect and admire her for her music, her poetry, her art, and everything else admirable about her, but we should continue to use own brains, and go with our own feelings, and not do or believe something "just because Jewel does". I'm not saying that she has done anything, or will do anything like joining up with a comet, just that we are our own sentinent beings, and no matter how good a source of inspiration someone becomes, they should stay a source of inspiration. I hope I am making some sense, and if not (even if I am) just consider the article and develop your own conclusions. :o) Jay Johnson the equilateral try-angel and proud fan (but not fanatic) of Jewel's art ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 22:09:38 +1100 From: Steven J Neville Subject: Lillith Fair Downunder ???????? Hiya everyone I found the following article in 'The Weekend Australian' regarding the possibility of a Lillith Fair in Australia. I hope Jewel participates :) " They Are Women, Hear Them Roar On All-Female Tour by Jody Scott An all-female pop concert sounds like a dream to singer Wendy Matthews, who is tired of being told she cannot tour with another female artist. "I am always told you can't put two women on the bill, just like you can't put two women back to back on the radio," Matthews said. "It is such a mind-set I don't know that they even question it anymore." But she is looking forward to helping organise an Australian version of Lillith Fair - the successful all-women pop concert that toured the US last year playing in 35 cities to mixed crowds of up to 33,000. "I think it is something every women performer would love to do," Matthews said. Canadian singer-songwriter and Lillith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan said she hoped to bring the idea down under next summer. Lillith Fair's US line-up included music heavy-weights Sheryl Crow, Sinead O'Connor, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega, Emmylou Harris, Jewel, Shawn Colvin and Joan Osbourne. McLachlan founded Lillith Fair to give exposure to female artists who could not get a place on the male-dominated rock festivals. "There is all these women out there making music and I felt they weren't being fairly represented," she said. "It became a reaction thing that if they (the industry) weren't going to do it we would do it ourselves. "For me it was quietly political, quietly feminist." But her main motivation was a "selfish desire" to go on the road with an all-female show. Along with billing big names, Lillith has been a launching pad for lesser-known artists in each region that it played. However, McLachlan said the attention was often diverted to defend the politics of an all-female show which has been tagged sexist by its detractors. "It is all about finding a balance, it is egalitarian," McLachlan said. I was wondering if this was true. It's about a song called "Bitter" > by Jill Sobule. The song is supposedly about "how bitchy Jewel is"(VH1 > soundboards). Jill Sobule was there on these dates: > ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 16:54:03 -0500 From: Stacy Samuels Subject: Jill Sobule's "Bitter" Wow, something I can post about. (my very first!) This song is what got me into Jill Sobule (in fact I saw her at one of those rare Lilith dates when she and Jewel were both there, was anybody else at the Columbia, MD show?) It's a really cool song. Hope no one's beaten me to posting the lyrics, I'm on digest so I can't tell for sure. Here's the lyrics... I could slip I could fall in that mean and awful hall with the other jealous bitches and the bitter grumbling men I could sneer I could glare say that life is so unfair and the one who made it, made it cuz her breasts were really big (Chorus) Well I don't wanna get bitter I don't wanna talk cruel I don't wanna get old before I have to I could bitch I could moan say I want to be left alone But that's not really true because I like my time with you Till you rant and you rave wishing fat folks to their grave but I feel sorry for them you say they get what they deserve Chorus I don't wanna get jaded petrified and weighted I don't wanna get bitter like you Like you, with the darts in your eyes Like you, with disdain for mankind I was charmed, now I wonder Chorus So I'll smile with the rest I'll wish everyone the best and know the one who made it, made it cuz she was actually pretty good Chorus So anyways, I think if the song is actually about Jewel (which I've never heard before, but assuming the original poster is correct) I don't think it's saying she's a bitch at all. I interpreted it as she was jealous of how some people make it big, but in the end she realizes they were "actually pretty good" so I don't think this is directed negatively towards anyone. It's actually her telling herself to look at things in a more positive light and not let herself get bitter. But now that you've got the lyrics I guess you can do what you want with it...Does anyone know more about Jill Sobule and whether she wrote this about Jewel? - -Stacy The angel with a dust speck named Spud on her shoulder (it's a long story...) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #133 ***************************
