Just to chime in: wish I were going to be in Boston that weekend! Moxy is nothing short of amazing; Jim's Big Ego is a delightful band as well, full and innovative. June Rich I've seen only once, and they are terrific; Peter Mulvey is also wonderful. Don't know the others, but with a lineup like this you CAN NOT GO WRONG. Be there! New Yorkers on March 7 can check out Mark Stewart at Lincoln Center with the Bang on a Can All-Stars, playing their new release of Brian Eno's "Music for Airports." I didn't get any responses from my last post about her, but now that I've seen her, I have to recommend her. She's a Fargo native and is mostly touring around Minnesota so I don't know how much outside exposure she has. Her music is mesmerizing live. There's some backing on the album, but she played with just a guitar tonight. She reminds me most of Patti Griffin (not to mention that she covered "Moses" tonight). If you get a chance to see Brenda Weiler or buy her CD, do it. And if you know her music, e-mail me. - -Scott e-mail: brougdms@wcta.net IRC: JWagner on EFnet Angel Needs A Ride: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7887/angel.html The Midnight Club: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7887/midnightclub.html "A little dust never stopped me none" - Tori Amos, HONEY "Okay Sita, breathe deep. For those of you that don’t know what it is, I asked the list to e-mail ME (not the list) their angel name, actual name, and e-mail address. I did not look through the list to see if anyone had the same name. This project was done to make it easier for list members to see if their choice was taken. Mike (the list owner) has told me he'll put it on his web page for the Jewel list so newer folks can access this Angel Name listing too. OH YEAH: if you want to take your name off the list or submitt a name please email ME with your angel name, actual name and e-mail address. (Don't send it to the list) Thank you! I saw it on MTV once. It is something like, you can do it as long as you give the writers a certain percent of money made off of the track. I hope this clears somethings up. Jon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 19:49:37 PST From: "Robby Fischer" Subject: "Bitter" Sweet? Ok. I was wondering if this was true. It's about a song called "Bitter" by Jill Sobule. The song is supposedly about "how bitchy Jewel is"(VH1 soundboards). I did some research on the song, but could not a find a site where I could read the lyrics to the song. I also found a Lilith Fair schedule. Jill Sobule was there on these dates: July 26th - 31st Jewel was there on these: July 5th - 10th, and July 29th - August 20th *cite*http://www.memphismojo.com/summerfest/lilithfair.html*cite* That is only time I could find where they were both together in the same place at the same time. It amounts to 3 days. A short to get to know someone in my view, and definitely not long enough to write a song about how "bitchy" someone is. I need some help on this one. Especially on the correct song intrepretation. If any of you know what "Bitter" is about and perhaps have a copy of the lyrics can you please email me a copy. I need to see it for myself. And if it turns out Jewel is "bitchy" then so what? She's who she is and I respect her for that. If I didn't I wouldn't be here. Plus Meredith Brooks changed everyone's idea of a bitch. It takes real courage to come out and tell everyone "I'm a bitch...". If Jewel is a bitch then it would definitely be in the sense Meredith put it...a woman with many sides, moods, and personalities. I supppose that the fact that she's a gemini may have something to do with it too. My cousin is a gemini and we are real close, but sometimes I can't along with him. Like no matter what I say will upset him. Other times, I can whatever I want and it'll then he'll just take it with a grain of salt. Jewel may be the same way. He and his wife moved to Europe and Paris ,but they were having some marital difficulties (Eventually he would have 5 wives in his life). In France, he wrote his most famous works, Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn- detailing his affairs and experiences as an expatriate in Paris- though they were huge sellers, but in the states they were banned as being sexually explicit. Nin (1903-1977) was born in France, spent some time in the states where she was married, then returned to Paris. She was a very intelligent, multitalented woman who spent time as a model, dancer, teacher, lecturer, writer, and psychoanalyst. She (and Miller) became part of an eclectic circle of writers and artists in Paris in the 1930's, and had several affairs, including a long ongoing one with Miller, and a brief fling with his wife June. (While she was married and also spending time with her psychology mentor Otto Rank). She also sometimes supported Miller with financial help. Her most well known writings were her journals, and House of Incest, Under a Glass Bell, A Spy in the House of Love, and Collages. She, unlike Miller, wrote detailed accounts of their affair, and they exchanged hundreds of letters. Henry and Anais found in each other an intelligence and renaissance-like view of the world, that few other people possessed, along with a deep passion for writing and of course physical pleasure. (Trying to keep this semi clean) Circles of artists and writers like those in that time and place rarely exist today, and I think Jewel is very Anaisish- looking for Henry. (I'm right here- lol) There is a movie called Henry and June which details much of this- although it is NC-17 some some of you younger angels may have to wait. Anyways sorry if I bored you but hopefully I enlightened someone. Will put a post up with Jewel/ Sylvia Plath connections soon.
