(its not what you are probably thinking.....:->) anyway, it was copywrited in 1989. the author is british. this far-awayness may make all of this coincidence, but i am 112 pgs into the vintage international printing and 3/4 down the page, concluding the paragraph: "In the Bible only the angels have wings, the rest of us have to wait to be rescued." hmmmmm..... sound a bit familiar? so i am wondering about several things. one, is this a common saying that i somehow missed in my study of adages? or do you think jewel read this book and adapted the phrase? i don't remember her ever mentioning winterson in her sprees of 'i read pablo neruda, anais nin, and really great philosphers like kerouac.' (sorry, pardon the sarcasm, i do find it amusing) or do you think that it is pure coincidence that jewel uses an almost identical line of lyric, in both meaning and grammar, in the song amen. just something to contemplate as you are brushing your teeth. btw, for those of you who have not read jeanette winterson, do it. if you love the brilliant and often raw images of jewel's songs and poetry, you will probably really like her work. i suggest starting off with _the_passion_. c'est tout luna ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 15:54:14 EST From: RamenGrrl@aol.com Subject: A Jewel book I found I was at the bookstore today with money and I found a book called Jewel - An Everyday Angel I was wondering if anyone else knew about this because they use a lot of info about the EDAs.. they even have Crash Boy's page and stuff for the EDAF... it's by someone named Tracey West.. there's also an awful lot of pictures.. I think she looks just as beautiful(though different sometimes) in everything she appears on. I saw her on Rosie Odonell the other day, and when she first came on i barely recognized her, cause I was used to seeing her from her videos, and she looked a little older or something. Anyways, that was a good show and she sang great, and of course Rosie embarrassed Jewel a little, and it was cool. I KNOW, i'm sure everyone here saw it. Now her singing, her singing even surpasses her outward beauty. I know she is just human, but in my mind she is half a god. Now, i don't worship her or anything, but that's my opinion. Thank you very much. ...Jason Gallagher KEEP SMILING :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 17:03:19 -0800 From: lil.goalie13@juno.com (Tara A Ali) Subject: NJC: contest results hey eda's(especially all of you who sent in an entry). they were all great and really funny and it took a while to decide on the best ones so i narrowed it down to 5 entries. if you would like me to e-mail you the winners/winning entries, please e-mail me privately (DO NOT post it) and i'll have them to you as soon as possible =) - -tara, the ice angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 18:01:02 -0500 From: uranium_eagle@juno.com (Issac J Brogdon) Subject: reminds me of me and the presuppositions of jewel's songs i think that YWMFM reminds me the most of me. well, the me i used to be. anymore, i think that i've become far too complex to know myself, and certainly to complex to be described in one song. just like you all. ;) oh yah, i don't know if any of you noticed all of the things that musicians take for granted. all of them seem to say that love is pure, that your soul is your essence, that you have a soul at all. i just figured that i'd bring this to everyone's attention. the quotin' angel james _____ There are certain times when public opinion is the worst of all opinions. It's called being influenced and is very different from say, plagiarism. A great man once said, Good writers borrow, great writers steal. What that means is that you literally Take someone else's ideas, incorporate them into yourself, and then make them your own. There is no such thing as an original idea anymore, they've all been used. The fun is in finding new ways to present them. No, Jewel isn't copying anyone or ripping anybody off, she's just another in a great line of artists who all use each other's works to compound and enhance their own individual greatness. We wouldn't have Tarntino and Lynch and Fincher if it wasn't for Hitchcock, Kubrick, Welles, and Scorcese. It works for all the arts, painting, writing, film, music. Jewel has cited numerous influences over the years as well as being compared to other artists herself. Hell, why do you think almost every active musician who performs live on a regular basis included one or more cover songs in every set and show they perform? To acknowledge their predecessors. It's like they say, you can never be a good writer if you've never read anything. And the good and great writers are the ones who have read the most. It's an obvious correlation. So, is Jewel copying or ripping off: Winterson, Dostoyefski, Poe, Whitman, Neruda, Nin, Plath, Bob Dylan, T Chapman, J Baez, J Mitchell, Joplin, Springsteen, P Smith, and a slew of others. No. But is she influenced by them and in their line of succession. Sure. It's a great line to be a part of. Doing kind things for others feels good and that is a valid reason to do them not because you feel you should. I also think that once people realize that we are all connected and that hurting someone else hurts themselves as well people will not be as inclined to do hurtful things. by the way, I've only been on the list a few weeks and this is my first post. i wanted to thank those who have posted insightful and positive messages. in I'm Sensitive it sounds to me like their are two voices, are they both Jewel? This is an interesting point. I recently read a book that talked about the concept of originality. It only became important in the 18th century or so. Now there's so much empahsis placed on it, and academic institutions are weary of plagarism. A favourite quote of mine: "stealing from one souce is plagarism; stealing from many is research." Years ago, painters were taught to paint by imitating the masters; writers like Shakespeare's ideas were far from original. With that said, I don't doubt the originality of Jewel's music for a minute. I mean sure, you may see the same general theme, or perhaps even the same phrase elsewhere. However, Jewel's music (both the lyrics and how she performs it) is so sincere and from-the-heart that it *has* to be from her. You simply can't borrow feelings like that.
