I would be interested to search through old dictionaries to see if the conotation of selfish has always been just that. It is important to remember that Webster attempts to define the current usage of the word. My Webster's (New World, 2nd College) gives a definition similar to Adrians, but also adds the following, which come closer to the definition that Sean, others, and I have described: "2. showing or prompted by self-interest" (pg. 1292) =) I think the suggestion that emerged on the list was that selfishness need not be a negative thing. The discussion that followed discussed that suggestion. =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 19:37:53 -0500 From: Gerry Lipnowski Subject: The real meaning of selfish Greetings angels, With all due respect, here we go again... I haven't responded to Sean Hooks' post on the virtues of selfishness, primarily because we've had variations on this discussion a number of times in the past. Most recently, it was in August when Sean postulated that Jewel was conceited. This time, he has simply replaced the word 'conceited' with 'selfish'. And again, I believe Sean has completely twisted the meaning of a word to suit his argument. Here's what three dictionary definitions (the first three I opened) say about selfish. 1) devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned only with one's own interests. 2) characterized by or revealing concern or care only for oneself 3) concerned unduly over personal profit or pleasure; lacking consideration for others I genuinely don't see how Jewel can be considered selfish by any of these, or any other definition of selfish that exists in the English language. There were a couple of posts that indicated that Jewel - as every other human on Earth - probably has selfish moments. I completely concur with that. However, that's a far cry from labeling someone as being a selfish person, which Jewel clearly is not. Otherwise, she would be charging us for the tapes that have been distributed through this list, such as the Jewelstock tapes. Otherwise, she wouldn't show up at the Thanksgiving EDA Foundation launch when she was ill. Otherwise, she wouldn't present us with statements that clearly articulate her system of values when she writes "In the end, only kindness matters." Some other posts on this subject indicated that people only do things for what they can get out of it, even when they're engaging in acts of kindness. That to me is the absolute height of cynicism, the disease that Jewel has overtly challenged as one of the worst qualities that people and society can have. Jewel has a clearly defined philosophy of life, and although it's a bit on the homespun side, it is one that is based primarily on COMPASSION : the opposite of selfishness. Here's an excerpt of Sean's original post in August, which he reiterated this time. "DEEP WATER In many ways this is Jewel's signature song. It is extremely reaffirming, positive, and hopeful. It is also about the benefits of selfishness and conceit. To believe that you really can overcome things, that you can make it, that you don't have to sacrifice your pride and health, that you are not just like everybody else and that you don't have to just survive that you can achieve, to do that, requires conceit." I must admit, I disagree with Sean's interpretation of this song. The key to the song is that you CAN'T make it in this world with selfishness, because no matter what you can accomplish, "It's nothing without love..." Otherwise, "you wake up making love to a wall"...meaning, you wind up by yourself. Sean is under the impression that you must be conceited and selfish to make a mark in this world. I see no empirical evidence to support the notion that exceptional people are possesed of these negative qualities. I've met at various times of my career Nobel Prize winners, political leaders, Olympic medal winning and Hall of Fame professional athletes, among others, and my experience has been that rather than be conceited, it's nearly always the case that the MORE exceptional people are, the more MODEST they are. You don't have to be conceited or selfish to be great. And as Sean is an admirer of Nietzsche, let me end with one of my favourite Nietzsche quotes (as I did in August): "There is not enough love and goodness in the world to throw any of it away on conceited people." I would say you could just as easily substitute the word 'selfish' for 'conceited' here as well. Just my two cents. As always, thanks Sean for a thought-provoking post. Hae a good weekend Sean and all my other fellow EDA's. Regards, Gerry ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 00:40:56 EST From: Beck82@aol.com Subject: Another Thing to Add Also, to add to my last post entitled "A WEIGHTY MATTER", Jewel has crooked teeth. Even with all the money she has, she is not fixing them. Doesn't that show pride in one's self that we all should possess? A self-liking and understanding that looks don't matter as much as the media makes it seem? Therefore, if Jewel likes herself the way she is, why should we care? She's our Jewel, and for me, a couple pounds here or there will not change that. Rebecca, The Angel With Butterfly Wings PS: In her poem "Me", she sort of outlines her flaws, awknowledging them, but looking past them for a greater good. please also see the poem "Criticism". This shows what she would think of this discussion. Both are in POY. PPS: Thanks for reading!!!! Anais Nin was a woamn who was married to someone in politics in the 30's or 40's. Henry Miller was a writer who was a friend of her husband. They had a "torrid" affair, and fell in love, but decided not to do anything about it and go their separate ways. Again, I'm not sure if this is correct, thise movies sometimes have more fiction than truth in them. I subscribed to this list about three days ago and I've enjoyed hearing the thoughts of you people, so I feel it's time to introduce myself. It's a little long--I apologize for that (unless you find it interesting) I am Michael Rusche, a sophomore at UW-Madison. I only became a Jewel fan rather recently (I'm sorry, anyone can make a mistake) but ever since listening to Pieces of You, I think she's one of the most intriguing artists out there. As I read the recents posts to this group, I've gotten the feeling that, at age 19, I'm one of the older readers of this board and also one of the few males here. Plus I'm not really a Sarah McLachlan fan. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Not that I think these differences will make much difference in the long run, It's just something I observed. I'll respond briefly to a couple of the things you've been discussing recently: Which Jewel song reminds me most of myself? I'm a little limited in my choices here--all I have is POY and I haven't been privileged enough to hear any of her other songs (looking forward to getting the new album though) but I think You Were Meant For Me reminds me a lot of myself. I'm more of an emotional guy, and I get kind of worked up sometimes when things don't work the way I'd like between me and girl -- I fall hard, I guess. Anyway, I can hear the sorrow and pain in this song and it's how I feel sometimes. I can relate to Pieces of You a lot. I grew up in a very small town, and didn't like it a whole lot. People of all age, high schoolers to adults, have a lot of cliches. They include and exclude people for dumb reasons like lack of athletic ability or dressing wrong or being not as smart or things like that, things that really have nothing to do with people personality. They're pretty racist, too--but it's not much of an issue because our entire county has about 130 non-whites (out of 28,000). I tried to reach out to some of these excluded people at times, I was one myself often enough too, but I excluded them sometimes too, and this song got to me. It reminded me of how petty and uncaring people can be( including me ). I read the comment about Jewel looking heavier. To be honest, I didn't even notice. When I listen to her sing on those shows, I can't keep my eyes off her face--she's so beautiful and expressive. Even if she is actually getting heavier, I don't think it's an issue at all. It won't change her personality or music, and I think that's what we love her for more than anything else. Last thing---I've done some browsing on Jewel-related Web sites (congrats to the author of http://jewel.zoonation.com -- it kicks ass) and I've gathered some information about the EveryDayAngels but was wondering a couple things -- How did you form and is it still possible to become one ( and how would you if it's possible ) I understand it's probably best not to tie up the board with responses so please write me at mlrusche@students.wisc.edu if you have a response for me. Sorry I lied -- this is the real last thing. I'm a big REO Speedwagon fan too and if anyone has tapes/bootlegs they are willing to part with I can try to work out a trade. Thanks! Hey EDA's: I love Jewel, I'm the Portuguese n#1 fan, and she can get fatter and fatter, and selfish as she might wish to, as long as her music keeps sounding wonderful, that's fine by me. As her fan I'll always be there for her, what ever might happen. It's not the first time I came out to stand for her, but I hope it's the last one (I now I'm not the first one to post something like this, and that makes me glad.) Jewel's music his great, and as I say in the subject, PLEASE JUST LOVE HER. And another thing, I just got my copy of FG single from Australia, and it as, besides a radio edit of FG, two other songs. They did have an affair, when Miller lived in Paris, but it wasn't a very traditional affair because Miller's wife June knew about it, and allegedly she herself sometimes had relations with Anais. Henry and Anais sent countless letters to one another, and remained critics/lovers/friends for years. If you want to check out some of their work, my favorite Anais novel is "The Four Chambered Heart," and Miller is most famous for both "Tropic of Cancer" and "Tropic of Capricorn." They both died rather recently, Nin in 1977, I believe, and Miller in '80. Hope this helps a couple of people out. (By the way, this is my first post. Hi, I'm Paul.)
