Well, I felt there needed to be just one more thing said about the changes we have seen in Jewel. I think we can all agree that she indeed has changed since way back when. It was inevitable. In fact, she didn't have a choice in the matter. When your music gets popular and you yourself become popular, there are accommodations that need to be made. I think we can all pretty much agree with that. However, there are a few that are leaving the list because of Jewel's changes. Now, there have been some protests against that. Some people are saying that various people should not leave the list because Jewel is changing. That is absurd! Although you, me, or the next guy may still see many of the things that we love about Jewel, some others see how she has changed and don't like it. That is their right. All of us change and we therefore lose some friends and gain some friends right? I don't think we all have the same friends that we have had since kindergarten do we? So, if some don't like the changes in Jewel, let them go. They are not to be held worse for it, nor is it any of our faults, nor is it Jewel's fault. Not everyone is going to like her as she develops. That is quite alright! So, I relinquish the pedestal.... Sean :) **************************************************************************** **** "Poetry: beauty, romance, love. These are what we stay alive for." -Dead Poets Society ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Feb 1998 18:58:20 +1100 From: blh301@coombs.anu.edu.au (Barry Howarth) Subject: Jewel only for Hi, Angels, Great post from Kat "imperfect angel"! Whoever wrote the article on Jewel that Kat refers to has never really listened to Jewel otherwise he couldn't say she only appeals to "depressed vulnerable teens that let men step all over them"! That's so far from the truth as to be totally ridiculous. I'm 56 years old, a single father (till my kids grew up and left home a couple of years ago) and a long-time trade union activist (and still secreatary of the local branch of my union and a national councillor of the union). And I love Jewel, for who she is, what she has to say and the music she makes (and I'm sure I'll love the movies she'll make). So the author of the article is wrong. I think he's frightened of Jewel and what she inspires in people. Jewel is strong and she wants people to be strong and in control. Who will save your soul, if you don't save your own? Not Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Buddha, or my old mate Marx, or even Jewel. Just you yourself. That's hard. That's strong. And don't be afraid of feelings. Being vulnerable doesn't mean being weak. It means being alive and caring, giving a damn. OK, sometimes you get hurt and get depressed. But you also feel joy and exhilaration. The opposite of being vulnerable, being sensitive, is being cynical, heartless, and that means dead. People often think of trade unionists as being very cynical, selfish and hard (at least in Australia they do). I'm in the union movement (as are a lot of the people I know) because I care about ordinary working people and making their lives better. And opposing what I see as making their lives (and mine) worse. I'm a lot more openly political than Jewel (from the little I know of her and certainly from her songs), but I feel our values are deep down the same in basic human terms. But she, by being an everyday angel and putting her thought s and feelings into everyday settings, and with such superb artistry, is a far greater ambassador for a caring, sharing world than I could ever hope to be. It is her immense talent to move people and make them feel with her that makes her great. No one has ever moved me like she does. Sorry I've raved on, but I hate it when people try to put Jewel down and denigrate her, her talent and her gifts to us. She really is a threat to a lot of people whose selfish worlds would be destroyed if everyone was like Jewel and were everyday angels. My thread is: >> What do you think has made Jewel so successful? >Steve Poltz I completely agree with Tom. Not only did he co-write the catchiest song on her album but he got KROQ to play her first single. Although 91X was the first station in the country to play WWSYS along with ANAR off of the Saint Doug compilation, KROQ is the most influencial modern rock station in the country so, as a result, MTV picked up her video because of the positive response. And the rest is history... Jewel is a one-of-a-kind talent but Steve really made it happen for her. The guys knows the right people. From what I understand, there was a taped interview with him on KROQ which aired the night of his Roxy show. Maybe someone who listens to that station knows something more about this but it was also the first time "Silver Lining" was played in L.A. (and I believe the only time). Lisa Sanders also told me that he invited a KROQ rep to one of her shows in hopes of adding one of her songs from her beautiful album "Isn't Life Fine" (Cargo/MCA) [can I name-drop or what?] to their programming. Unfortunately, according to Lisa [Worden, their public affairs rep] they're format is moving toward a "heavier" direction (which contradicts their requent airplay of Loreena McKennitt's "Mummer's Dance" and Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn"... hmm..) Steve's unselfishness as an artist trying to get the thriving San Diego singer/songwriter scene to the masses is incredible... Ok, Steve owes me big time for kissing his @$$ this hard but the guy just amazes me... 92.5FM is now the only station supporting _real_ local talent. Ever since Mike Halloran moved to the station as PD the quality in programming has been phenomenal. A lot of people should recognize Mike from his many interviews with Jewel, Steve and Greg (and the memorable video he shot of Jewel walking into Steve's house in OB and catching Polio Boy and The Foo Fighter in bed together -- with Steve in a dress). I've recently contacted Mike and, as always, he's vowed to stay loyal to local artists -- which means playing Greg's "Diamonds and Gold" off his upcoming album "A Long Way From Heaven" (Unity)... ok, enough promotion... ... Interesting that they chose "Silver Lining" as the first single. As much as I love the song and "The Great Mystery," "Impala" and "Kicking Distance" are hands-down the hits of the album. Request his album to be played in your local towns and don't miss an LRT if it comes within 500 miles of where you live. This guy is really on the verge of major success and performances this intimate will be few and far between sooner than later. Her last post to this list was as recent as Thanksgiving. As a gentle reminder of the way Jewel views EDAs, I have chosen a few from last year to repost. -------------------- Subject: FROM JEWEL TO THE EDAs Date: Fri, 18 Jul 1997 16:54:35 -0400 (EDT) Hi everybody, Jewel took a moment while spending private time with her family to write you a note today. See some of ya soon in Bearsville. Here ya go. :-) ****************************************************** Wow! Hi everybody! I cant believe you are getting together without me! But Im in Alaska chillin outfor a few days and Im sure glad for that. Its so beautiful here and quiet and the Time Magazine hasnt even made it here so its sort of happening without me which I dont mind at all cuz I dont really know what to make of it all. Can you believe everything that has happened since the EDA concert in Bearsville? AMAZING. Whats it all mean????? If you figure it out let me know.....I dont have a clue! Thank you for being who you are to each other, this helps me remember and be balanced. Bye, Jewel ------------------------ Subject: MESSAGE FROM JEWEL Date: Thu, 25 Sep 1997 20:37:22 -0400 (EDT) Hi again, The Kilchers are cyber-active today! Lenedra said I should have the updated European & Japan tour dates for you sometime tommorrow, probably. Hang in there you International EDAs. I'll post them ASAP. In the meantime, Jewel just sent this message for me to forward to you all. Enjoy. :-) MrBB ************************************************ Hi everybody. You little EDA's you! I'm heading for Europe but my enthusiasm is pretty low, don't have too much energy for conquering the world, but I'll try. At least I'll have my EDA guitar picks to perk me up! They make me smile. You've seen them stuck to my mic stand sometimes? Mostly I can't wait for time off to process everything that's happened with and to me. And time to WRITE SONGS! I hear from time to time these wonderful stories of you taking good care of each other, helping people in trouble and stuff, and I always feel very proud to know you and have your support. I think that we can't leave it all up to the Dianas and Mother Teresas--we have to see as individuals that no one we know goes hungry in any way we can help. There's so much that individuals can do and you guys really get that. We are the better world. Thank you all so much for being there for me and for others. (Repost) =) Hi'ya! =) This is a repost of a post that I posted over a year ago. It is always interesting to me the cycle in which list topics revolve with different players and equally valid opinions. The following post is focused on a debate that was occuring on the list last January. The debate was about Jewel's rising popularity and some list members' dissappointment with the increasing sense that they were losing the intimacy that had been so inherent to Jewel's shows up to that time. =) Interesting how this relates to a current thread on this list. Equally as interesting is my comments about how the rage over Jewel would die down "in a year". Woe me of little faith! =) Enjoy! ************************* Subject: small shows and popularity... Date: Fri, 31 Jan 1997 21:52:09 -0500 From: Crunch =) hi'ya all!! i'm get down on the lawn and preach some love! =) you know most bands never stop doing small theatres and clubs. it merely takes a little more attention and perserverence to get tix. i have seen many bands, at the apex of their popularity, at small venues. i saw guns-n-roses in 1989 at a small bar in LA. i saw Live (not necessarily their apex) last spring at in a club with 300 others. i saw smashing pumpkins in dallas at (Trees?) 2 years ago. and on and on... the point is this. jewel is still doing small shows, though not coffee houses. her security is tighter, and her shows aren't as intimate. but will just a small amount of perserverence it is rather easy to get front row. and when the hype about her dies down (in a year or so?), she will be able to relax and talk to us again. =) i think that what most of us are afraid of is the loss of innocence.... our own. many of us envisioned jewel as someone just like us, fighting her way to the top. we believed in her purity. with sucess comes responsiblity, and jewel has taken that on. and consequently lost that air of innocence that we so loved. she has become more focused and more involved. like any of us would. this does mean she has lost her purity of vision, but she has to learn to refocus it and use it to affect a larger audience. =) jewel is growing and learning. that is never a bad thing. =( any doubts that we may have about that are self-centered. some of us feel left behind and instead of trying to move on with our lives we get a little angry and jealous. =) instead we should praise and support jewel's new growth. she needs our love as much as ever. it is not easy being one of the chosen icons of our society. with it comes many doubts, pressures, and evils. more than ever jewel needs to know that we will love her no matter what, that we believe in her vision, that we believe in her, whatever path she decides to take. =) it is by giving unconditional love that we can show our value and solidity. we all know the phrase, "if you love it, let it go. if it comes back, it always loved you." lets do that! lets keep gathering at jewel shows and making EDA signs and requesting songs and showing her that we still love her! (what could be more depressing to her than losing such an awesome support group?) if she doesn't continue to keep us in her graces, she never really cared. but, you know what? all my money says that when the dust settles, jewel will still be the angel that we all love.... and she will still love us dearly. =) love~life! crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Feb 1998 05:17:50 EST From: PENNY16161@aol.com Subject: POLL #12 Here is this week's poll (sorry for the delay): What is your favorite piece of Angelfood?
