They did it with some Bush song (I think it was Greedy Fly or something), I have the "Don't Speak" club version, and now they did it with "Foolish Games". Basically, they want to make the popular songs "danceable" so they get people to make copies of them in fast-mode. "Jem" was named because it was a gem, like "Jewel" and both start with "Je". Ironically, I was listening to some Jem tapes (you know, tapes from the TV show that came with the dolls) and the singer reminded me of Jewel. So, it's ironic a singer named "Jem" made a "Foolish Games" song. BUTLER - Movie Editor Date: 02/14/98 22:15 For more than four years, old Pattonsburg in northwest Missouri has been dying a slow death as its flood-weary residents gradually relocated to higher ground. Now what's left of the town will go out in a blaze of glory, captured on film for Hollywood. For the upcoming Civil War movie "To Live On," old Pattonsburg will stand in for Lawrence, the abolitionist stronghold burned in 1863 by William Clarke Quantrill's Confederate raiders. The historical drama will be filmed in the Kansas City area this spring by director Ang Lee, the Taiwan-born maker of "Sense and Sensibility" and "The Ice Storm." The 20 or so empty buildings standing along old Pattonsburg's main street are being stripped of their modern accoutrements -- awnings, signs, power lines -- to make way for construction crews and scenic artists who will transform the facades into those of a frontier town of 140 years ago. Based on Woe to Live On, a 1987 novel by former Kansas Citian Daniel Woodrell, the film features a screenplay by James Schamus, who also wrote "The Ice Storm." The story centers on two Missouri farm boys -- played by Tobey Maguire ("The Ice Storm," "Deconstructing Harry") and Skeet Ulrich ("Scream," "As Good As It Gets") -- who become Confederate guerrillas fighting along the Kansas-Missouri border. Pop singer Jewel, in her acting debut, will play the woman who has relationships with both of them. The filmmakers were delighted to discover in Pattonsburg a ready-made set not too far from Kansas City, said Declan Baldwin, unit manager for the $35 million film, which will be released by Universal Pictures. "You would never want to build a set this big from scratch," Baldwin said last week. "There are towns like this all over the U.S. We've found them in Arkansas, Texas, Kansas and Missouri. Many are used frequently by motion picture productions needing a Western setting." The schedule hasn't yet been set for the filming in Pattonsburg, which is just west of Interstate 35, about 70 miles north of Kansas City. But Baldwin estimated it would take seven to 10 days and nearly 500 persons -- actors, extras and crew -- to restage the Lawrence raid, a dramatic highlight of the movie. "Initially we'll be building the town up with construction and set dressing so that it looks like the 1861-62 period," Baldwin said. "And then with effects we'll create the illusion that the town is ablaze." In preparation for filming, Pattonsburg's paved streets will be covered with dirt, and false fronts and boardwalks will be constructed on the existing structures, employing rough planks cut by a local sawmill. Baldwin emphasized the town wouldn't actually be burned. Instead, the filmmakers will rely on movie magic, using propane gas fed to the empty buildings through concealed pipes. But after filming is completed, any remaining structures will be razed, according to Pattonsburg Mayor Mark Smith. "A few folks have decided to stay in their homes in the old town," Smith said last week, "but now they'll be living in the country." After severe flooding in the wet summer of 1993, city officials working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to relocate Pattonsburg nearly two miles away, above the flood plain of the Grand River. For the last two years residents and merchants have been in transition. Some rebuilt in the new town, and others moved their houses onto new foundations. The arrival of the movie company is forcing them to pick up the pace. Smith is moving his auto repair business out of the old town and into the new one. Officials of Maple Woods Productions, which is making the film, met with Pattonsburg residents last week to answer questions. "It was a really good meeting," Baldwin said. "Lots of the local people are interested in the economic impact on the town. I told them that whenever possible, the goods and services we need for that portion of the shoot will come from that area. We already have signed five or six contracts with local businesses." In addition, local residents already have been employed as laborers, preparing the abandoned buildings for the scenic artists and setting up a construction shop, toilets and other necessities. And, according to Mayor Smith, the city of Pattonsburg will receive a location fee from the movie company for allowing the shooting. In the meantime, Baldwin said, his location scouts continue to research additional shooting sites on both sides of the state line. "The only absolute location we've got is Pattonsburg," he said. "The rest are still under consideration." Asked whether the "To Live On" crew had been able to find suitable shooting sites, Baldwin answered: "Absolutely. Right now it's about choices. We have several possibilities for each shooting location. Now we're trying to determine which make the most sense logistically and if the property owners are amenable." Smith said Pattonsburg residents were eagerly awaiting their brush with Hollywood. "Most people are real enthusiastic about wanting to see it happen," he said. "It's been a neat story: The town gets flooded and is badly hurting in '93. The people leave, and in '98 it comes back to life as an 1860s town and goes out with a bang." I mean come on. You joined this list 'cause you liked Jewel and her music. You liked her for who she was. And now your saying that you just want to get off this list. So sue me if you don't like what I am about to say (just kidding). Anyway, did you not join this list because you love Jewel? Everything cahnges, Jewel is part of everything ya know.
