My thread is: What do you think has made Jewel so successful? Well, I think it wasn't her songs, looks, voice, or even her charisma that made her what she is today. It was her dedication. She had a Janis Joplin-like attitude of "Don't compromise yourself, you're all you've got." Just think, in 20 years from now how many people(other than EDAs) will remember her first or second hit? Looks and voice are prone to time, they age. So those also won't last forever(unless you're talking about Elvis-both young and old). Charisma, I believe, is a neccessity in a business as hectic as the one she's in. All stars of all types seem to possess some type of charisma. As a notorious digressor I'm going to take you back 2 sentances. Her dedication has gotten her far and it will get her further still, since you don't need a good voice or looks to act well. If she makes it as an actress it will be because she was dedicated to it, and set on seeing it through as far as the entertainment biz would bring her. Well, I think it's time for someone else to post now. I've said enough to feel like I've made whatever point I was trying to make. Always up for a chat, Robby the over analyzing angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 1998 04:51:06 -0600 (CST) From: "James H. Judd" Subject: What is the AngelFood Bank(AFB)? [LONG] Hey, This is very long but it addresses all the questions we've run into I thought would be common to more than a few of you. Since the AngelFood Bank(AFB) is well into offering its first tape (Future Folklore v3) it's probably a good time to give everyone some background on how the project came into being and what it's all about, so here goes. Ever since the early days of the jewel list (1995) people have been asking for audience recordings of Jewel. It makes sense considering an appreciation for Ms. Jewel is what initiated interest in the list and acts as the glue which holds it together. But the jewel list is about much more than getting tapes, and the frequent requests to the list (although often generously fulfilled) can be disruptive to its central value- the introduction to and constant evolution of our online community. The community has been evidenced in many EDA gatherings and events, and because of it even greater opportunies such as Jewelstock, the EDA Foundation, etc. have been brought to us. It's rare to find an artist who is as supportive and appreciative of her internet fan base as Jewel has been to us even before most people had heard of email, the web, or chats. What is the purpose of the AngelFood Bank? I started it as an unofficial organization of volunteers who want to give the gift of Jewel's music, but it's turning into much more through the contribution of some great ideas and the charity of a special group of EDAs. Put simply, through a web site people are able get tapes. All they have to do is sign up on the site and eventually (I'm working on program changes that will give assignment to a volunteer taper immediately) they get an email introducing them to a volunteer taper commonly called a branch. They then coordinate with the branch (according to guidelines set by the AFB) for sending in a blank tape in exchange for one containing the recording they desire. Currently only Future Folklore v3 is offered, but plans for more are in the works. What are the benefits of the AFB over tradition list tape requests? Things that come to mind: o more focused mail on the jewel list o high quality second generation recordings for anyone who asks o lightens some of the workload in administering/managing the jewel list o greatly reduces workload in contributing new distributions to the list o partially automated for previously restrictive growing number of fans o a constant, reputable resource with an email address to address problems o vacation from volunteering without effect on steady distribution o pages for description of tapes and tracklists o volunteers get special benefits for their outstanding service (in addition to the huge reward of the opportunity to spread the music and helping starving angels) and excellent quality first generation recordings off the masters Future benefits in the works: o instant assignment to a volunteer taper o more error checking for submitted email address o original color Jcard downloads for tapes o area for photos and stories of events o administration area where volunteers can increase or decrease workload o online signup to become a volunteer o any other great ideas you can come up with (email me!) In closing, I can't thank the charter volunteers enough for sticking with me in the months of development and growth it took to get this project started: Alan Bershaw and Mike Connell for their support and advice Tamera Sawyer, who answers mail at info@angelfoodbank.org and helps administer the project All the wonderful volunteer tapers, in no particular order: Gerry Lipnowski Chris Groves Marian Veselcic Albert Sze-Wei Wang Jay C. Johnson Mary Nguyen Mykle Mariette Tom Miles Karen Boysen Ben Wu Matthew Milner Amy Keegan Sabre Mahaffy Tamera Sawyer Michael Garnett Julie E Graham Tammy Campbell Jon Hamilton Kate Burris Brandi Powell Scott Broughton Lily Ash And finally last but not least I'd like to thank the sometimes forgotten creator of the jewel list and administrator, Jeff Wasilko. Without his efforts (and the efforts of the jewel-news moderators) we wouldn't be reading this. You can sign up for Future Folklore volume 3 at http://www.angelfoodbank.org If you'd like to volunteer to help out as a branch, have good quality recording equipment, and are willing to make time, please email info@angelfoodbank.org There is currently no way for you to support the project by donating money due to legal concerns, but ideas and volunteering your time are most welcome! Everything the volunteers have done has come out of their own pockets from MrBB on down. If you'd like to send little Jewel related gifts for me to distribute to the most active volunteers or have any need for snailmail correspondance, you can use this address: AngelFood Bank P.O. BOX 748 Auburn, AL 36831-0748 Why did I take on this project? A friend of mine introduced me to something called The Forum offered by Landmark Education. It's an inquiry into what it means to be a human being. In their courses I learned how we can become more related to others through contribution to and communication with our communities. The AFB came out of a class I took with them called the Self Expression and Leadership Program. Stuff you should at least check out as most of you would find it rewarding and a surprisingly valuable contribution to your lives. It's not for everyone, but many of you would get alot out of it. 'nuff said. I saw a need for the AngelFood Bank and felt I could contribute my time and talents to you best through the creation and development of this project. By facilitating the distribution of Jewel's and similar artists' music I'm helping spread the enjoyment and philosophy of the artists which in turn communicates my own interests, beliefs, and values. I've gotten very positive feedback- thank you for appreciating our work! :-) Happy Valentine's day. You can still show love even if you don't have that special person right now (I seem to be in that position myself :-) just look at the people around you. Thanks for making it this far, James, who is slowly making his passion his work not his hobby ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 1998 10:45:14 -0500 From: casper31@juno.com (Adina F) Subject: JewelStock Does anyone have a copy of Jewelstock that they would be willing to make a copy for me? Temple University Ambler, Fall of 96 Why? Great crowd ( we had a huge group of EDA's lining the front of the stage) Jewel at her innocent-lyric forgetting-best! Selena having to feed her the words to Flower (I think that was it, correct me if I'm wrong, I know some oif ya are still around) Even the rain couldn't stop us thanks to Selena's supply of garbage bag rain coats! :-) Unfortunately, I didn't het to stick aroun for the post concert fun in the party van, but I hear that was a blast as well. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 1998 17:06:33 -0000 From: "Julie Benzie-Nicol" Subject: NJC: new here (Jewel in Europe/Amsterdam) Hello all! I'm brand-new here and was suggested by someone called Paul to come here and see what was happening! He also said to post this here (I had posted it to the alt.fan.jewel group before) as he kinda liked it...I hope you do to! Ok, I first heard Jewel when I was living away from home and an American friend of mine put on "Pieces of You"...he played all the stuff he liked and missed out the stuff he didn't...well, I thought it was mostly okay but completely fell in love with "near you always"...sigh... Anyway, we found out that she would be playing in a cafe in Rotterdam which has a capacity of about 100 people...my friend was amazed at this (because of her popularity in America) but I had never heard of her in Scotland, so I thought it would be a fine night out anyway... Well, that night never happened (she cancelled) so we went to see her in Amsterdam a month later...by then, I knew a couple of her songs quite well...upstairs in the Paradiso (where she played) there were about 200 people so the atmosphere was really 'close' and it felt very personal...she even asked the audience what some words were in Dutch, and that was *very* sweet... Okay, I think the point I'm attempting to make here (you should see my university essays...sheesh...) is that I was totally emotionally touched by Jewels performance that night...from broad smiles (do you wanna catch a cold with me?) to chills up my spine (foolish games) to laughter (she yodelled)...just one woman and her guitar, standing there having *such* an effect on me... My American friend is about 6'6", so he was able to appreciate the view better than me, but I stood there with my eyes closed (not all the time, I must add), listening to words and music that touched me somewhere special...a little locked away place where emotions such as joy and pain are found and I have to say that Jewels music found that place that night... Well, that concert inspired me to finally get round to learning the guitar...I set the goal that within a year, I would be able to play all he music from jewels album...and I can! I do no justice to the original musician, but I feel privileged to be able to play such beautiful music...I also play the piano, so 'Foolish Games' gets the Julie treatment too... =+) ...I love it all... Julie =+) - ---go see the Scottish Girl--- http://www.btinternet.com/~jmfbn ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 1998 12:42:43 EST From: JewelEDA21@aol.com Subject: NJC: Seb has to leave the list for a bit Hey there Well, it finally happened. I play ice hockey (have been for 10 years), and I have been recruited by three top universities to play. Anyways, I tore my knee two times, and Have broken my ankle three times. My doctor said that the next time I ruin my ankle, I need a pin and surgery. On Friday, i was fooling around, and re-broke my ankle. I have to go into surgery and all that, and the only bad thing is that there are splinters of bone all around my foot, so they get to clean that out :( I have to leave the list for a few days/weeks/months, however long it takes. I jsut want to say thanks to all the people that I have met and all the amazing things thta I have learned about myself and others, due to the amazing-ness of the EDAs and Jewel. Thanks for everything, honestly. Keep in touch! I shall return! My father works on Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, VA, and he picked me up a CD from there, which was produced by the AFB's band. One of the songs on it was YWMFM. I made it into a Real Audio file. It seems to be sung different -- the verse(s) are switched a bit. My first one is from her recent visit to the Jay Leno show. I loved how she sand the second verse. She got really emotional. I think that helped. My second would have to be at the lilith fair show in Milwaukee Wisconsin. If you went to that e-mail me. Anyways, when she sang YWMFM, the whole audience sang. She stepped back from the microphone and let them sing. She had tears running down her face. I would two if I heard 24,000 people singing a song that I wrote! Bye All! For a fully formatted version please point your browser to: http://members.home.net/ecto/tara.html If you don't have full Internet access, I would be pleased to send you a plain text version of this article (about 6KB). Just send me email requesting a copy. My email address is: ecto@home.com I'm sure that many EDAs might also enjoy Tara's music, just as they enjoy Elizabeth Hummel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lisa Sanders and other artists that Jewel fans have supported. She appeared on the same stage with Jewel at last summer's Lilith Fair, was influenced by Jewel's music, went through what she calls a "Jewel phase" in her songwriting, and in many ways has similar vocal qualities to Jewel with a strikingly high range, though as far as I know, Tara doesn't yodel. You can also watch Tara act on television in a recurring guest role in the new "Fame L.A." TV series. Please check your local listings for time and station.
