Hi everyone, i've been on the list for a long time now but i've never posted before. i guess it's kind of bad that my first post has to be about this, but it's the first thing i've ever seen that i really thought i had to say something about... well, it seems like some people, including me, actually, are kind of losing faith in jewel. i don't know if i'm just letting too much of what i read get to me or if there's some other reason that i don't like her as much anymore, but she just doesn't seem as sweet as she used to. i didn't see the tonight show, but a lot of people were talking about her saying that music is getting redundant or something like that... i don't get that. some people are saying it's because she's been doing the poy stuff for so long now, but she has a repertoire of so many great songs, if she's really that tired of it, why doesn't she do something new? i sing and play guitar, and i can't see myself ever saying something like that. and this whole movie thing... i don't know, i bet i'm the only one, but i don't like the whole idea. i don't like it when singers try to act, or actors try to sing, even if they are just trying something new or something like that. Small independent films are okay i guess, but feature films? that just bothers me. i guess it just seems like artists who do that are turning their back on what got them to the top in the first place... and i'm not saying that's what jewel is doing, but i don't like any artist to do that, and i'm certainly not going to change my opinion for her. and i know this is kind of shallow, but i'm not the only one to mention it, so here goes... the whole makeup thing, just plastered to her face. on one level i can understand, because i doubt she can really control what makeup artists do to her face, but still... i was flipping through a magazine, and they were giving tips on how to do your makeup like your favourite stars or something like that. they had a little paragraph on how to get jewels "fresh, glowing look," but to me she just looked like a barbie doll. don't get me wrong, i have a lot of respect for jewel, and i can't really criticize because obviously she's a lot more successful than i am... really i'm only focusing on the negative stuff here. there are still positive aspects, but it just seems like lately there are fewer and fewer of them. sorry this post was so long and pessimistic, but i wanted to throw my opinion in. thanks... I really don't want to come across harsh but I can't believe all the misunderstandings. Jewel has mentioned several times that she had been tired of playing POY songs, as any human being would be after singing the same songs over and over and over and over for years. I think anyone else would have felt smothered by the repeatativeness, and lost it long ago- I know I would. As far as her singing Foolish Games again, she was playing on network tv. She kind of has to sing something that most people know(not everyone is an EDA). Unfortunatly, tv does have a commercial back-bone. I give her tremendous credit and have the utmost respect for her devotion as well as her amazing passion, talent, and abitities. Noone should take her statements personally. If you love Jewel, allow her to grow artistically and support her in what ever she decides to do. She knows her fans are largely responsible for her sucsess. She's not turning her back on you. I have a felling Jewel will be singing for a long, long time, just not every night. Let's let Jewel be Jewel. Hi angels, wow, it`s been quite a while since I last wrote to this list(not counting the import-post-thingieemajig some weeks ago). It`s been almost a year now since I discovered the EDA`s; I signed on in February last year and I made so many great friends trough this list it was *un*be*li*ev*ea*bl*e.. =) Also, everyone on here were so helpful and gave me a hand with everything from naming songs I couldn`t get out of my head, to Angelfood, to lyrics.. =) Now, I unsubbed last summer and didn`t re-sub before earlier this month. I don`t recognise that many of the subscribers anymore, so it almost feels like being a newbie again .. ;) Okies; I`m just getting sentimental thinking about all the good cyber-times I`ve had with the angels this past year =) Here`s for bunches more Jewel-talk and net-friendship =) Kindest regards, Lisa. the EDA in Norway Tidal Greetings: Fiona Apple webcards and penpal- service http://www.InternetJump.com/FionaCards/ Visit Lisa`s Room for rambling, poetry, tapelist, Tori Amos, Jeremy Irons, Jim Jarmusch, The State of the Day and more junk.. http://www.InternetJump.com/LisasRoom/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jan 1998 12:22:09 EST From: JennyDansr@aol.com Subject: Leno I watched the Leno thing, but my VCR wasn't working. I forgot to define it. :) It's Angelfood with no Jewel on it. Then, who sings on it? EDAs -- singing Jewel's songs. The first one was done wonderfully by Eric Montas. I don't know how to retrieve copies of it, but here's the setlist. THE EDA COVER TAPE Jewel Fans Cover Jewel Side A ABCD Song - Liz Clark Everything Breaks Sometimes - Rafael Galianes Angel Needs A Ride - Kim Littlejohn Flower - Tom Proven Old Lover's House - Toni Dunn I'm Sensitive - Greg Yanito Jessica - Katie McCurry Morning Song - Angela Dilulio You Were Meant For Me - William Cheng Foolish Games - Eric Montas I've Got The Blues More Than You Do Blues - Angela Dilulio You're So Small - Gerrit Kruidhof Absence of Fear- Katie McCurry Side B Flower - Angela Dilulio Sometimes It Be That Way - Damon Schmidt Let Them In - Katie McCurry You Were Meant For Me - Toni Dunn Angel Needs A Ride - Tom Proven Near You Always - Rebecca A. Smith Been Down So Long - ANgela Dilulio Carnivore - Eric Montas Billy - Kim Littlejohn Who Will Save Your Soul - Katie McCurry Angel Standing By - Eric Montas Medley - Tom Proven Everyone had a limit of about three to five songs. The ABCD Song was just a short guitar song. Jessica was sung a cappella. You did not have to have special digital recording equpiment to participate -- "Everything Breaks Sometime" was recorded on a Fisher Price "My First Radio". There were also no requirements in how your song sounds, you were just supposed to sing. The 2nd EDA Cover Tape was supposed to come out after the second album was released, but too many people are interested so I suppose we will continue with this project. Perhaps there will be a 3rd EDA Cover Tape??? Regarding the 2nd EDA Cover Tape - -- A *lot* of people want to participate already. We need to have the song limit at three songs. If you want to record more of them, I will listen to all the material and maybe include an extra song or not include all of them. We can compromise about this. - -- If we want a J-card as good as the first one (which is the best J-Card I have ever seen), there will have to be contributions. Something this heavy in graphics and colors costs money. Following the guideline used on the first EDA Cover Tape, here is the new version. This was written by Eric Montas and updated for the new Cover Tape: - ---------------------------------- 1) People email me the top *4* Jewel songs they would like to cover by February 6th. That gives everyone about a week to decide. Indicate whether or not you know how to play the songs, or if you need the chordsand lyrics. If I don't know the chords to a song, I will post every few days or so a request to the list asking anyone who does to email me a copy. If no one answers the request, we'll have to find someone who can figure it out. The reason I'm asking for your top 5 songs is to have an alternate, should someone else want to do the song. If there ARE conflicts (and I'm sure there will be), I will email all interested parties and ask if they would like to do their alternate pick. Hopefully, there will be a resolution, but if there is not, then we'll have different versions of certain songs. But that's okay. It'll also show which of Jewel's songs have the biggest impact on us. 2) Once the play list is settled, I will tell everyone where to send their tapes. I ask that people send me a copy of their cover, because bad things do tend to happen every once in a while through the mail. 3) Hopefully, I will have all the tapes in by the end of Februray and can begin to compile them all. I will then find someone to tree the tape (uh, can anyone help with this?) Other points I'd like to bring up: * When sending in your tapes, I'd appreciate it if people would include a picture. If I could put picture (or your band's) next to the song you cover and your name, it would make this tape much more personal. * Because we have an overbundance of participants already, we need to limit our songs to at least three, four with an alternative. They are not all guaranteed to be on the tape, but at least one will be. It depends on the time of each song and the time every song takes. * Quality of the recordings will obviously vary, but I encourage everyone to use whatever is at their disposal. If all you have is your boombox, then so be it. But I wouldn't recommend going into a studio unless you really, really want to. Hopefully, the quality won't vary significantly to force people to adjust the volume when they listen to each song. * I have nothing against list members doing a cover solo, then another with other local list members and/or their band. Well, that's all I can think of. So everyone email me your requests, and if enough are sent in and done fast enough, I can guarantee you the song. And, in turn, this project can be done before everyone realizes it. Now, start practicing! eric montas - ------------------------ So, please send in your Top 4 songs to MAXMOUZE@aol.com by next Friday. I can see on a subject like this where you may be coming from, but personally don't relate myself. I think, that if Jewel is showing any signs of, uh, fatigue, I guess, it's this: I think she's being pressured by the media to be someone else. I know that sounds stupid, it's just my little thing anyway. But really, she's surrounded by a lot of hype. Not about her, but being in the music industry, many musicians around her are just redoing their image to be someone else. There are a lot of musicians who are beginning to publicize hype rather than music (suttle reference to the Spice girls, tee hee), And I think it will fade. I just think she's being pressured. I'm not criticizing, I have felt the same way at sometimes but figured it wasn't much. And although I don't feel the same way, I understand how it must feel. I just thought that I would briefly introduce myself and tell how I discovered Jewel. My name is Diana and I'm from Trinidad in the Caribbean. I first saw Jewel singing with Mellisa Etheridge on the VH1 duets, I had no idea who she was, didn't catch her name but I thought that Foolish games was just the most beautiful and moving song. I then saw it again and this time I taped it and noted her name. The next time I saw her was on MTV sing WWSYS and I realized that she had a hit on her hands and was getting very popular. Then of course came YWMFM and then I was so glad that they made a video on Foolish Games and that song just became hugely popular and very famous down here too. I think that she has an incredible vioce and is so talented and what I like about her is that she so simple. Everytime I see her now she is looking a bit more glamorous and professionally made up. I think that is ok but just hope that her fame does not chanege her in any way or does not get too caught up in the glamorous Hollywod Life. The three mentioned songs were the only ones that I knew until about 2 weeks ago I got POY. I have been playing it constantly ever since and now I love her even more, her songs and lyrics really move me the way that none since Bob Dylan or Neil Young has. I decided to look her up on the Internet which is how I found out about this list and I am so glad I did. What I have gathered is that angel food is tapes with Jewel songs and there are tons more music out there that I have not heard yet. So please, I want to get my hands on all the material I can, I need to hear more of her music. I can post tapes from Trinidad and I have a Miami address that I use where I get things couriered down to Trnidad so if anyone posted me a tape it would be just like posting to anyone else in the States. What is the EDA cover tape that I have seen mentioned and can I get it? Well, sorry that this has been so long, but I have one last question. I used to.play the guitar when I was about 14-15, I am now 30 and would like to get back into it. I saw someone post a similar question. I would like to know what might be a good guitar that is not too expensive that I should start out with and would be intersted if anyone could share any experiences of getting into guitar playing with me. Thanks so much Diana The angel who is constantly searching. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #73 **************************
