Has anyone else seen these.... HUGE WALL SIZED Pieces of You promotional poster. From what I gather, the Foolish Games single cover is identical to the picture. Plus, it says 3 hit singles, blah, blah. Guys, this sucker is huge. Regular sized poster of Jewel playing Angel Standing Bye at that awards show where she said she was supposed to play Foolish Games. It's absolutely beautiful. (The music store down the street may have an extra if anyone wants to fight over it). Has anyone else seen these. I've not heard a mention of em on the list and I was wondering if it was just my dumb luck.... /@ Shane Kirk \ \ 127 Commonwealth Dr., University of Kentucky, ___> \ Lexington, Kentucky 40503 (__O) \ (____O) \ thumper@mis.net (____O) \ (__O)_ \ \ \ http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/2490/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 19:41:50 EST From: MikeDreams Subject: Steve & Jewel, and Lisa @ the Roxy Hello EDAs! Well, last night was just incredible! Lisa and Mary opened up for Steve Poltz in the Roxy of Hollywood, CA. A great performance by Lisa! I love to hear her sing. She was accompanied by a very talented guitarist, Mary. Great Job - Mary! Steve's performance was outstanding as usual, and I can't wait for his new CD coming out on March 17th. Jewel strolled in, as I anticipated. Sang some songs with Steve and stayed for the whole show. After her and Steve gave some autographs and took some pix. What great people to do that for their fans! I think having them both take pictures with me and my wife was one of the happiest moments of my life. Thanks Jewel & Steve! You two are the best! There were lots of the usual EDAs and S.D. performers in attendance. Said "hi" to many, sorry for those I missed. To name a few, Berry, Gerard, Larry, Igor, Tom & Nancy, Elizabeth H., Karen, Cindy Lee B., Sandy, Michelle and many more. Well, that's just another one of Mike's Dreams to come true - a night like that one. They did it live, and they said that the echoes were incredible. Shea Stadium has a special echo room where anthem singers practice. So that they can learn to ignore the fact that they are hearing several much-delayed versions of themselves coming back at them. (over 12,000 less emails for smoe.org to send out :) There are 19 more submitted posts to go, I'll send that one on tomorrow night in a single post *Please*, no more posts on this, it's all been said :) The main reason this one went on with so many posts, is because (I believe) that likely more list members watched this event than any other Jewel event on TV before, thus we had more submitted posts. Mike :-) More "Jewel sings the anthem" posts: ******************************** From: MAXMOUZE Subject: Re: My beautiful angels... please read :`( whats happening???? Two things... if Jewel is in Playboy, it is probably just as the winner of the sexiest celebrity contest or something like that. It was a controversial issue awhile back but we all voted for her. Jewel would never do something like that, and you should not even think that... Second, Jewel didn't start right away. She had recorded it prior to singing and they played the clip way too soon. If you watched it closely, you will see that she was waving while "Oh" played and she quickly stood up to the microphone and started on "say can you see". It wasn't her singing and the reason she looked so unenthusiastic was because she was lip synching and I guess she felt dumb doing so. But, everyone does it... Mm__) ******************************** From: KNicky3116 Subject: superbowl Hello everyone! Someone posted how they had to pre-record Jewel (and everyone else who ever sings the anthem) singing the national anthem and then she has to fake it, and it was so cute. She was still smiling and waving when the recording started so she had to catch up with it. Does anyone know why they do that? Why didn't she just sing it live? But anyway, she did do a nice job singing it and it sounded GREAT! Nicole ******************************** From: Pulp Subject: Lip-syncing at the Superbowl... For those of you who watched the Superbowl and thought the lip-syncing was a bit shoddy (a couple posts have already mentioned it) you have to keep in mind that the audio-syncing with the video you see is doomed to imperfection. Even with a live event, when you're seeing it as it happens, there are problems, the main one in this case being that the camera and the microphone pick up the respective media at slightly different times; if the microphone feed that NBC used to broadcast the national anthem was several hundred feet away from the speaker being miked (in order to get a lot of "stadium" reverb, et al, and cover up to some extent the fact that you're hearing a clean studio recording and not a live performance), there would be a very visible delay between when the camera picks up Jewel's lips moving and when the microphone picks up Jewel's voice singing the words. It's one of those weird science things. ;) I feel I could have explained that better, but I hope that makes sense to some of y'all. ;) Peace, Josh ******************************** From: Missl3itch I hope everybody got a chance to hear Jewel's lovely vioce during the Super Bowl. It was beautiful, and she sounded great! However, it became very obvious that she was indeed lipsinging to one of her own recordings of the national anthum. As she was waving to the audience, her voice started booming, and it was really obvious. She must be so imbarassed. I still thought she was great, and she looked so pretty. Hope everyone had a great Super Bowl Sunday! - - Nicole The impressed and yet somewhat disappointed angel ******************************** From: Jarboc1 Subject: I hate having to think of a subject (it's about the anthem) well, I never have made many posts here, and never anything this outlandish but... who's got the weirdest story of how they watched the singing of the national anthem? I was leaving a show (I sell motorcycle helmets) down here in central florida, it was getting dark, I looked down at my watch, IT'S AFTER 6, AHHHH. I pulled off the road at a side street, parked it, and flipped out my handy pocket TV just in time to watch them introduce the teams, yippee, so after another grueling ten minutes of footbal jargon (not into the game, can you tell?) they go to commercial, I was worried cause my watch clock said it was 17 after (knew the kickoff was at 18 after) but they came back and said "blah blah blah, the blah award nominated blah, Jewel" and the crowd goes wild. loved the song, what a voice she's got, I don't care if it was lip sunk, she probably recorded a better song not being under the pressure of the crowd, it was cute when she was smiling and waving then the song came on and she whipped around to that microphone. so that's it, now gentlemen (and ladies) start your keyboards! Josh - the blah blah angel, hahaha P.S. I was surprised at the numerous strong negative reactions to her singing. ******************************** From: "Nardini" Subject: Can someone say "Cue"??? I just watched the Super Bowl and couldnt help but professing my amusement at the National Anthem, sung by our good friend Jewel...I really cant stand lip-syncing to begin with, but when you dont even realize that the music is playing and your not moving your lips, its pretty pathetic...Jewel fucked-up, and then couldnt even recover well...Shucks...I bet that ruined many a patriotic feeling...Maybe I should "sing" next year... In a message dated 98-01-25 20:19:30 EST, you write: << Also after watching the national anthem on the super bowl i was about to cry. She had no enthusiasm for her county. >> I have to agree w/ you.... she didn't look happy to be there. She seemed a bit rushed when she started singing. And it seemed like she was emotionless.... it wasn't like her at all I thought. Either she was upset about something or nervous. I'm not sure. She was great, but I believe she could've done better. - Brandy ******************************** From: smithr@agcs.com (Roger Smith) I'm shocked... I was watching the Super Bowl anthem, as I am sure most of you were... and after it was sung, my sister, who knows I'm a huge Jewel fan called me...and said she can't believe it was lip-synched. I was in shock, telling her how she was crazy and all...and when I came home and rewound my tape, and watched it again....She was right. The words started coming about a second before she started moving her lips. Why in the world would she lip synch something? I'm shocked. ******************************** From: Sam P Cervera Subject: In defense of Jewel's Superbowl performance I believe that Jewel had little choice in the decision to lip-sync or not to lip-sync. That much has been made clear. I find no reason to question Jewel's patriotism. Although she may not have covered her heart completely or gotten down on her knees for love of country, I feel that Jewel's recorded performance conveyed the appropriate message. In realizing that she began the anthem too late, I feel that Jewel just wanted to get it over with. She was probably embarrassed and rightfully so...with so many millions watching on TV. Would any of us have acted any differently? Come on...let's cut the girl some slack. - Sam ******************************** From: David Reed Subject: Re: The National Anthem Hi there. :) Well, in truth, NONE of the acts that performed during the Superbowl are performed live... They are all recorded well in advance...part of the reason for this is to allow for PRECISE timing of events such as the flyover by the B-2, and in the case of the halftime show, to give the people on the field EXACT cues as to when to do what... NONE of what was performed was truly LIVE...And it's been that way for years... So please, before we all slam on Jewel (or the others) to hard, keep that in mind...she doesn't lip-sync the best, but would't we really prefer she really sang anyway? :) I thought she did a wonderful job... - Dave ******************************** From: RockrGurl Subject: National Anthem I Dont mean to be a complete BRAT about this....but i just got done reading those 26 posts thingie ya know? and was kinda disapointed...i dont consider myself a "diehard" jewel fan...but i think she has a great voice and great meaning in her songs...anyways back to what i was saying...when i was watching her sing...i guess i was just too shocked i was seeing here there...that didnt even notice she wasnt really singing...i didnt really even know until you guys said something about it...and now i think i shall go watch my tape becuause it sounds kinda funny.. : ) Anyways i know this will probably go unread because of people getting sick of the subject but i figured since i read everyones i should get my thoughts in....Oh about being shocked..i guess i mean that i could never be up there...having the whole country watching you at one time...ya know? i mean its not just a city or state...its the whole country...kinda a shocker ya know??? Pre recorded was awful and looked bad her jumping to the mic....but she looked so pretty! - Michele ******************************** From: st_kuo@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: jewel-digest V3 #55 Yes, I saw Jewel performed today at the Super Bowl and she did a brilliant job, even though the organizers of the SB asked her to do something she never done before: lip-sync. I know there are some of you out there who are disappointed that she didn't sing it live, but it was *not* a decision on Jewel's part to do so; in fact, everyone from Whitney Houston to Kathy Lee Griffon lip-sync when they were doing the National Anthem. I think it's a compliment to say that Jewel is terrible at lip-sync, since I know from experience that Jewel is an awesome live-performer. Jewel had her hands tied at SB today, but it was a nice exposure for her (billions of people watching!) It just sux that they started the song too quickly, caught her off-guard. She looked fantastic! - Steven ******************************** From: stan184@ix.netcom.com Subject: Regarding Jewel's National Anthem and lip synching Ok EDAs, let's get one thing straight and perfectly clear. First, Jewel was *forced* to lip synch. Do you know why? Because all the singers in the recent years are required to lip synch the National Anthem. Whitney Houston, Luthor Vandross, Katie Lee Gifford were ALL lip synching. After they make Witney's National Anthem into a single that's when I found out and that's years ago. So please don't diss Jewel for lip synching badly. We all know this is the first time she ever done so and I am very glad that she's not good at it cuz it shows how genuine her musical talent is. I am very pissed at the organizers at the Super Bowl for starting the song without letting Jewel know it first and I know it looked quite obvious even to people who didn't know about the lipsynch tradition. I thought it's the best interpretation of the Anthem and I have heard countless version of it. Jewel looked gorgeous and I won't be surprised if the majority of the people stare at her instead of the flag. WAY TO GO JEWEL!!! P.S. I think we should make Jewel's National Anthem a part of the angelfood Stanley ******************************** From: moneypenny Subject: jewel on aussie news hey, i missed the anthem but i just saw jewel on channel 10 5:00 news...she looked really nice....i like her long hair,...yeah she reminded me of jennifer aniston too!...it was only 5 seconds of video when she was waving and then started singing but it was still JEWEL!......by the way..who won? ...oh btw thanx for all the offers of sending me tapes of the anthem.but dont worry....hopefully i can find it on someones page.....oh yeah....the person(sorry i forget your name) who sent me an e-mail and said it was on their page......well it wasnt!!....i cant find it!!>.... thanx anyway again. - jessica ******************************** From: KNGxRaGe Subject: Super Bowl I'm a newbie to the list and this is my first posting.
