I'm surprised to see the Spice Girls win so many awards(just watched the AMA). I guess it just goes to show how people love to be safe. If she wasn't patriotic, at least if she wasn't prepared for the scrutiny that comes with singing the national anthem at the Superbowl, she wouldn't have been chosen to sing it, and I'm sure there must have been a lot of other performers who were considered. I don't know how patriotic she is, but I suppose she is, in a independent kind of way. She identifies with Alaska, why shouldn't she identify with America? I suppose she would identify more with the amber waves of grainand purple mountains' majesty than the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, or leaky oily tankers running aground in her backyard, for that matter. 2) The Montreal Gazette be dammed. Anyone who looks at a cute woman singing the national anthem and thinking that when she places her hand over her heart she's placing it over her cleveage has a funny way of differentiating love for one's country from erotic love. Would the Gazette have preferred Rosanne's rendition? Of course Jewel loves her country, and in a most wholesome way. Let's see Sarah McLachlan sing the Canadian national anthem at the opening of some big hockey game, and see how they cover her rendition! Yeah, and miscue the first notes of the calliope, and see how Sarah likes that! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 22:25:14 -0800 From: tammystar@juno.com (Tammy S Patterson) Subject: favorite jewel songs Hi everybody. I've gotten alot of posts from people asking about installing my Jewel theme. For those of you who don't know, sorry for not including instructions. I usually do, but this time... uh... After that, you just need to unzip the files into the \Program Files\PLUS!\Themes directory on your hard drive and use the theme switcher in the Control Panel to set it up. That easy! :) Later, all... Subject: Poltz & The Apostles Rock The Roxy (Jewel too!) Hi, angels and sideburns! It's 2:45 a.m., and I've just returned from the West Hollyweird Impound Lot, where my load has been lightened to the tune of $163.50, thanks to my great-parking-spot prowess. How do you spell "Grrrr"? That was the only discordant tune of the evening, though, as Poltz and the Apostles -- and more than one Angel -- just conquered this part of the world with an ethereal set. I'll give deets in the daylight. Here's the gist: Lisa Sanders (with Brother Mary Dolan) opened with a half-dozen or so delighful renditions. I wasn't jotting notes at this point, but I remember: - -- Isn't Life Fine? - -- Jewel - -- Lazy Days - -- Shadow (there were others). Saint Polio emerged solio, singing: - -- One Left Shoe - -- 98-Pounder - -- You Were Meant For Me The Apostles -- John and James (Castro) were summoned at about this point (I forget exactly when). - -- Slippin', Slidin' Away - -- Oh, Good Morning (I Miss Waking Up With You) - -- Broken Hearts John Kruc story as we retune to open tuning. "Jewel? How about singing this with me?" Jewel and Steve [ascloseasthisbutmuchcloser]: - -- Silver Lining - -- Old Liver Sauce - -- I Thought I Swallowed You Last Night Jewel departs the stage; Steve w/the boys: - -- It's a Beautiful Day - -- I Love Everything About You - -- The Great Mystery - -- Satan's Choir - -- I'm Within Kicking Distance of Your Heart - -- Impala - -- Rainbow (w/Lisa Sanders) - -- Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls ~~Thunderous Applause/Standing "O"~~ ~~~Encore~~~ - -- You're leaving Again - -- Morning Song It was a rawking time, I tell ya! Next up: Steve announces a Livingroom Tour in conjunction with the EDAs; volunteers will be sought when the itinerery is fixed (to be continued...). (This is FOR REAL, tavarischi!) I just wanted to shed some light on plans for BEFORE the Patty Griffin/Ellis Paul concert on February 21 at the Somerville Theatre up here in Boston. I think the show starts at 8-ish, or something likethat. I was thinking that we could all meet for dinner beforehand, somewhere on the Red Line. Since it looks like a more-than-healthy sized group of people is coming to this show, there is a lot to be said for meeting obscenely early at a restaurant...to make sure that our food is cooked and down our stomachs and throats in enough time to comfortably get to the theatre! So I was thinking...meeting at Pizzeria Uno's at the Porter Square stop on the Red Line (1 stop away from Davis Square...) at 5 PM for dinner. I know it's early, and I know that there are more original places than Uno's...but...Uno's is totally yummy, it's still got fun atmosphere, and the earlier we go, the better it will be...since most of the cambridge area restaurants do not take reservations. Also, Uno's is pretty reasonable in prices. And loads of fun! so does this sound good? Anyone with an opinion let me know. There is about a month till the concert, but as I know, all too well, time really flies. take care y'all stephanie Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos We should be very greatful to have a kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu limited body...like mine or like The Greek Poet Chyck yours.
