Me again. :) A couple of points to make today. First of all, did anyone else out there think Jewel looked quite miffed (I'd use stronger language, but I respect the age range we have here) that they started playing the National Anthem early? It was OBVIOUSLY synched, as you heard her start singing before she opened her mouth. She did NOT look impressed shen she left the stage. Second: In #54, Bryan mentioned Jewel looking like "She had no enthusiasm for her county. She started right away and I felt that she didnt even care. I'm beginning to think that she might be a hypocrite." If it makes you feel better Bryan, I'd say it was because of the miss-cue in the performance. I know quite a few of you Americans, and I only know of one who's not very patriotic. But, then again, he just moved there from Canada a couple of months ago, so give him time. :) But, again, give her the benefit of the doubt. Look at a few points. She's got a very hard touring schedule (like most performers). That wears on a person. Being in the spotlight gives her very little personal time. Strike two. She has alot of loyal fans who truly love her. But at the same time, she probably has to deal with her fair share of twits. It can be a little daunting and, perhaps, it's just starting to get to her. She need some time off. I don't know if this is fact or not, and I'm not trying to portray it as such. But I'd hate to see a fan lose faith in her. I haven't been a fan for very long, but I, like everyone else on the list (I'll assume), adore her. She is the original Everyday Angel. But we must remember as well... She's only human. But a human who's brought alot of joy into people's lives. Finally, regarding the Favourite Songs thread. My favourites are (in order): 1) Near You Always - a beautiful song which basically says what I feel about a particular person. Whenever I'm around her, the longer we're together, the more I want to stay. But (due to a screw up on my part in high school) it's not quite plausible. I just hope that, one day, I'll find the kind of love that's put down in music here. Also, one of the only songs (the other being You'll Be With Me by Lawrence Gowan) that I truly believe is, by nature of the music and lyrics, actually empathic. But that's me... :) 2) Painters - It reminds me so much of the relationship my parents had and how mom has been since dad died. 3) Foolish Games - Just because... 4) Angel Standing By - Imagery and music come together so perfectly here. This song, according to some of my friends, describes me. I have this need to know that someone is watching over me. To be cliched, it speaks to me. That's my rambling for tonight. Hope you all don't mind my taking up precious Jewel list space. :) But with a group as nice as all of you, I don't think that will be a problem. Have a good one, EDA's. May you always feel your own Angels Standing By near you... "Performance" is a strong word, because there was absolutely no doubt the stars and bars were being lip-synched. In fact, the recording kicked in a moment before Jewel was prepared to sing. And while the version she had pre-recorded was filled with passion, her stand-still performance did not. There were players featured on the tube who were belting it out with more gusto. Halftime, on the other hand, was a different story.... There's a picture of her with the following caption: Jewel's lip-synched National Anthem was less than inspired. MY PERSONAL COMMENT: I think she sang the Anthem beautifully. I just think it would be hard to be as inspired when you have to lip-synch it. Also, many past Anthems at the Super Bowl have been done this way (and last year's halftime show), so I wonder if Jewel even had the option of doing it live or this way. Anyway, if you just listen to it, it's awesome. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 17:22:59 -0500 From: twh662@juno.com (T H) Subject: Real Audio clips from Super Bowl website http://www.superbowl.com/8/25_vv.html (that's 2 vees after the 25_, not a "w") There are two Real Audio Clips (video and audio) of Jewel from the above Super Bowl web site. The cover has a picture of Calista Flockhart of Ally McBeal fame, and the page numbers are 32 and 33. The article is about the best of 1997 in music. There isn't really much in the article about Jewel, but there is a picture of her next to a tree on 32 and on 33 there is a chart. On the top of the chart it says: "Several of 1997's top 10 sellers- including Pieces of You-were actually 1996 releases. Conversely, Flaming Pie crashed just weeks after its late May release. Proving that sometimes slow and steady wins the race- or that Jewel has legs and Sir Paul doesn't." Then in the chart under top 10 sellers Jewel is number 2 with Pieces of You with 4.3 million units sold in 1997. At number one, the Spice Girls sold 5.3 million units in 1997 with Spice. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 17:11:13 EST From: Angeljlb96@aol.com Subject: Cruise Control Hi guys... Jamie ~the everyotherday angel~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 19:44:03 -0800 From: paul arzt Subject: many things ok, i have two things to say: one. the comment that jewel looked like she didn't care for the national anthem and that she had no pride in the anthem, maybe so, probably infact giving the nature of pop stars, but is there anything wrong with that? I have no pride in my nation, and i tuned into the superbowl to see jewel sing. Not to see jewel sing the national anthem nor to watch a football game. If jewel doesn't have any pride in her nation so be it, that is her choice. By living in this nation we all have the chocie of whether or not we like or feel strongly patriotic about this nation. It is called freedom of choice, sometimes referred to as the redress of grievences, and it is apart of being an american. so get off her ass. ok next topic if you are still with me, and if you are thanks for reading this. I am a fan of jewel, and a fan of her work. now i make the distinction because i have found that i have a what could be called a crush on her. She is rather attractive as i am sure most of you ahve noticed, but still i was wondering if it is slightly, or totally chavinistic (spelling?) of me to become a fan of hers becasue i like her face. now i will say i also like her music, but i first heard her in a friends car, saw her cd and said "she is fine" or somethign to that effect. is this wrong, or just natural? it has been bothering me becasue i seem to have a crush on all female artists i listen to or read, here is a list: fiona apple (though this is dwindling) sylvia plath elastica liz phair and other. do i really suck? thanks for reading this and thanks for your resonses love from paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 17:05:16 -0700 (MST) From: mrbruce@imap4.asu.edu Subject: NJC: I'm back Well after way to long of a time(like 6mths) I'm back. I must admit it made me uncomfortable to see a performance by Jewel in any context puctuated with a hi tech symbol of weapons of massive destruction. It seems to me to be at odds with what we know Jewel is all about. (Frankly, I couldn't help but think of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" at that moment.) I understand that Jewel herself is not at ease with the anthem in the first place, in that it glorifies war..... so in spite of the fact that I was excited to see Jewel participate in such a noteworthy and large-scale event - and I recognize the attached prestige - overall, the whole thing left me just a little sad....
